Text from Pages 1 - 208 of the 1983 volume:

PIONEER 1983 East Haven High School New Horizons From day to day our views and viewpoints change; We travel — from frontiers upon the range — To cities — bustling, busy, young and new. And we look upon each day with a different view. A life — a series of horizons seen From endless seas to rolling hills of green To city skylines rising strong and tall And the changes of the year from spring to fall A child within the confines of the home — A gradually opened world in which to roam; The world of learning opens children's eyes-To look upon fresh views and untried skies. Horizon to horizon, day to day We spend our lives looking far away. To life! The everchanging world we see In which we're free to travel, free to be ... From The First Moment Of Life Until The Last, We See Everchanglng Vistas Of Life Before Us. On A Clear Day, We Can See Forever Dedication We, the class of 1983, dedicate our yearbook to Mrs. Linda Peduzzi, a woman who has been more than a teacher to us. For four years she has supported our hopes and fostered our dreams; she has taught not only English but also life and caring. She has been a true friend to all, and in appreciation we dedicate our yearbook to her. Thank you, Mrs. Peduzzi. 16 A dministration JOHN MEZZANOTTE Principal NORMAN DEMARTINO Assistant Principal CHARLES CONTE Administrative Assistant PHILIP MADONNA Administrative Assistant JOHN VILLANO Administrative Assistant FRANK CRISAFI Athletic Director MICHAEL A. It seems to me they come to share Each joy or sorrow that we bear. Among the living I can feel The sweet departed spirits steal. And whether it be weal or woe, I walk with those I used to know. I can recall them to my side Whenever I am struggle-tried; I've but to wish for them, and they Come trooping gayly down the way. And I can tell to them my grief And from their presence find relief. In sacred memories below Still live the friends of long ago. — Edgar A. Guest Class History Freshman Year: 1979-1980 The class of 1983 entered these hallowed halls on September 4th, 1979 — a day we'll never forget! Our advisors. Bob Proto, Scott D'Amico, and Kathy DuPerry, immediately set about making money for us. First, however, we elected the first players and representatives in the drama of our class officers. After a long controversy, they turned out to be: President — Patty Hennessey Vice-President — Gloria Marello Secretary-Treasurer — Lori Mennone Historian — Dave Brennan Fund-raising activities were very successful that first year. We began with a block-buster cookie sale, which added over $1000 to our treasury! There was outstanding support for this, with over fifty people selling the cookies. We followed the cookie sale with a Spring Dance in the gym, and ended our first year with an extremely successful bake sale. A good start for a super class, we decided. i Sophomore Year: 1980-1981 We returned to the High School in 1980 a little older, a little wiser, and a lot more experienced than we were as freshmen. In addition to electing a new slate of officers (listed below), we also established a Class Council to help our officers. President — Eddie Pascale Vice-President — Lori Mennone Secretary — Gloria Marello Treasurer — Christina Huisman Historian — Jeanne Valente The cookie sale had become an annual event; we held another bake sale as well. But the memorable event of our sophomore year was the concert we sponsored, featuring Impulse , an all-student rock band. Also, that spring we set the wheels rolling for our Junior Prom. We held meetings, elected committees, and picked two chairpersons: Lisa Pageau and Sue Richmond. Suddenly our sophomore year was over, and we were juniors! Junior Year: 1981 — 1982 We strolled through the halls in our junior year, conscious of our new standing as upperclassmen. This was our hardest year, we were told; being the class that we were, we decided to enjoy it! Our new officers, elected after the usual shake-ups, promised us a fair deal and a good year. President — Steve Amarante Vice-President — Patty Hennessey Secretary-Treasurer — Steve Narracci This year we sold candy instead of cookies. Of course, we had our usual bake sale, and last year's successful Impulse concert was followed up with a combination dance — concert featuring the band. The Prom Committee went into action; we wanted a first-rate Junior Prom. And that's exactly what we had, at the Villa Capri, on May 7th, 1982. Toward the end of the year, an Ad Committee, headed by Laura Suraci, was set up to sell advertising in our Yearbook. Plans were made for the Senior Prom: the able chairpersons were Lori Mennone and Carolyn Venditto. At last, the year was over and we were finally seniors! Senior Year: 1982-1983 The last year. That final feeling didn't really start to sink in until after Christmas — that this was it ! We held elections in the beginning of the year; our most exciting race, between five parties, was won by the surprise candidates! The all-male team took command: President — Mark Lyon Vice-President — Jim Wallach Secretary — Andrew Carlson Treasurer — Tommy DeChello Historian — Mike Russo The year rolled by swiftly. We sold both candy and cookies this year, as well as running a successful ad campaign for our yearbook. The last few months sped by_____ On May 27th, we held our Senior Prom at the Park Plaza Hotel. In early June, we gathered for our Senior Luncheon — the last class event before graduation. We heard the final addresses, and collected our long-awaited year books. Graduation. The twelve long years of our education had never seemed to short as they did today. Clad in cap and gown, we received the diplomas that made the four years seem worthwhile — and made the memories twice as important. Now we were off to explore our new horizons, our amazing and super class separated for good........ A Joseph Acompora 17 Rizzo Street Basketball 1. Leslie G. Most significantly, Mr. Erwin Sapiro announced his retirement after twenty-six years of dedicated service as band leader. His replacement was Mrs. Judy Webber. During the year, the band played at the home football games and the pep rally. They performed their annual Christmas and Spring concerts, also performing at various public functions. Our award winning, traveling band was invited this year to several states to represent East Haven. The band chose to travel to Washington D.C. in April where they gave several concerts, performed on the Capitol steps, and toured with Senator Christopher Dodd. Although Mr. Sapiro retired, the band will continue to travel and represent our town as well as it has in the past, but now under the direction of Mrs. Webber. BAND MEMBERS 1982-1983: G. Galusko, A. Since then the membership has risen from fourteen male members to its incredible fifty male and female members at present. The Physical Education Club was originally started to encourage physical education careers for the students. The club has grown from its original purpose to take on such tasks as carnation and lollipop sales. The profits from these sales along with money raised from a Super Sports Marathon are donated by the club to Easter Seals. 121 Handsome Club One of our more select clubs, membership to the Handsome Club is based primarily upon charm, wit, and personality. The factor deciding membership is most definitely one's looks. Members of the Handsome Club are notorious for being mind dazzlers, as well as heartbreakers. The Easties had alot of heart, but came up short. They hope for a more prosperous season in 1983. The football team had its outstanding members, despite the season they had. Senior captain Paul Spadacenta was elected to both the first All-Housatonic team and the second All-State team. Senior Quarterbck Scott Gravino received an Honorable Mention for the All-Housatonic team for his efforts. Terry O'Brien, a junior, also received an Honorable Mention for the All-Housatonic team. He is dead who sees nothing to change. No wrong to make right; Who travels no new way or strange In search of the light. Who never sets out for a goal That he sees from afar But contents his indifferent soul With things as they are. Life isn't rest — it is toil; It is building a dream; It is tilling a parcel of soil Or bridging a stream; It's pursuing the light of a star That but dimly we see. And in wresting from things as they are The joy that should be. v ■ • v;.; - . - -.;7 . IT — Edgar A. Guest
