Although average in every way, there was something extra special about these tots. They were fated to become East Haven High School's Class of 1982. It was not long before the children had progressed from rattles to books, from cribs to kindergarten, They quickly learned to tie their shoes, to count to one hundred, and, of course, to read Dick and Jane. As traffic squad officers and kindergarden monitors, they were soon ready to begin their adventure at the Middle School. The Middle School was large and scary. But within a few weeks, they had become accustomed to the words locker”, schedule , and homework. Three years later, with great pride, the children stepped, one by one, up to the podium to receive their certificates of Commencement from the eighth grade. It is there that our story begins. Freshman Year In September 1979, we, those very special children previously mentioned, began our journey through the East Haven High School. With anticipation and apprehension, we stepped through the doors, into the experience of Freshman year. While adjusting to the new environment, we discovered vast extra-curricular opportunities. Each person becoming involved with the social, academic or athletic activities in which he was interested, we soon became active members of our school community. Individuals of our class participated in the production of All-American, while others performed with the band in Disney World, and still others brought our school to glory by playing varsity or junior varsity sports. As a class, we chose Roseann Frione, Denise Engelhardt, Karen DiNicola, Robin Healy, and Julius Morro to lead us as officers. Throughout the year we made great strides along our High School path. Sophomore Year After a short but restful summer vacation we prepared to travel the second mile of our journey together. Raymond Luden, Kelly Bentley, Janet Durant, Dineen Kelly, and Denise Englehardt were elected class officers. Several class members participated in the play Cod's Favorite and others traveled with the band to Virginia. Required to take Biology, we all gathered fond memories of dissecting earthworms, frogs, and lima beans. It was also during Sophomore year that we read Catcher in the Rye (the book that corrupted our innocent minds?). With a vision of the road ahead, we highlighted our activities by choosing and ordering class rings. Junior Year Junior year began with much excitement. Will you turn my ring? Electing Michele Leona, Carol Florio, Denise Engelhardt, Robert Albis, and Catherine Ushchak to lead us, we looked forward to an eventful year. And so it was. Four members of our class were chosen to take part in the first Yale University-East Haven High School Program; several students received the honor of Rotary Youth of the Month; two individuals represented the class of 1982 on the High School Bowl Team-one as a team member, the other as an alternate. Six students were chosen to participate in Boy's State, and three to attend Girls' State. Nationally, four class members were commended by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Perhaps the most unforgettable events were the Honor Society Induction, the production of Oklahoma, the band trip to Pennsylvania, and, of course, the Junior Prom. Although junior year was quite prosperous, we were not without obstacles. We saw the introduction of the Preppy as well as the Kansas gang, the Doors gang, and the Anti-gang gang. Somehow certain posters were put up all over the building and cellophane tape was strung across the hallway. Was this not also the year that one individual was hit by a flying hockey puck-while sitting in the stands?! We completed our third year at East Haven High School and were ready to face Senior year as mature, responsible young adults. Senior Year As we entered into Senior year, we prepared ourselves for a long, rugged trip, and we hoped to blaze a trail for others to follow. Six class members were chosen to participate in the Yale Program, and all three members of the High School Bowl Team represented the class of 1982. Band members traveled to Disney World, and members of the Drama Club took part in the production of Crease. Michele Leona, Linda Laurello, Jackie Mattei, Robert Albis, and Catherine Uschak were elected class officers. We were climbing our last half mile when a strange, incurable disease struck. In no time at all Senior-itis had reached epidemic proportions. Hoping to escape this plague, three class members accepted the invitation to participate in the University of New Haven Outstanding High School Seniors' Program and quickly fled from the area. The disease was never fully conquered, but we, the class of 1982, finished our journey in spite of it. The final steps of our travels together will remain with us forever-the magic of the Senior Prom, the sentimentality of our luncheon, and the pride of High School Graduation. But, the road, now, is forking, and our paths are no longer one and the same. As we journey our separate highways, we know that someday our paths will, once again, converge, though maybe only long enough to smile and to remember the Class of 1982 . '• tit CROSS COUNTRY KEEP ON RUNNING The East Haven Boys' and Girls' Cross Country teams may not have won many meets this year but they were always in there fighting. The girls were led by senior Co-Captains Mi- chele Venditto and MaryAnn Navaro and the boys by Bryan Rockwell and Pete Crescenti. Both the girls' and boys' teams were coached by Mr. Al Carbone. GIRLS' SWIMMING CO FOR IT! The girls' swimming team had a very successful season although it was marked by one major disappointment. They did remarkably well, winning 10 of their twelve meets and tying with tough rival Cheshire. Thus, the young squad had to look to its two senior Co-Cap- tains, Scott Ferrari and Paul McCormick for leadership and stability. Through coach Kay's efforts, a new, exciting brand of ball is being showcased in the Easties' gym and around the Housa-tonic league. The lady yellowjackets' 81- 82 season was built around high scoring center Rhonda Ostrum who also excelled as a ferocious rebounder. Sisson NINETEEN HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-TWO AFTER SCHOOL SPECIAL PIONEER STAFF - 1982 In the month of May the 1982 Pioneer staff was chosen by the advisor, Mr. Sullivan. The editors-in-chief were Gina Amatruda, a three year member and Debbie Hanson, a two year member. The rest of the staff consisted of Juniors and Seniors. In the month of May some of the staff took a trip to Meriden Ct. Here we learned about copy, covers, and layouts. During the summer some of the staff members went ad hunting around town to the local businesses. Also during the summer the decision of the theme had to be made. The dance was sponsored by the Student Council. The attendance was overwhelming and the number of people to arrive in costume was the best ever. These were some of the sounds coming from the gym on the eve of the East Haven-Branford Thanksgiving day game. Preparations for this event started first thing in the morning. All day cheerleaders, football players, and Pom Pom girls decorated the gym. Everyone was trying to get psyched for the big game. As the evening drew to an end, spirits were high. Everyone in the gym was ready for the game of the year. The Spanish Club provides a means for students to learn about the Spanish way of life. Nargi. 149 THE BEST OF Prom 1981 It was April 24, 1981, a Friday evening which was filled with a little rain but the beautiful ladies and handsome gentlemen of East Haven's class of '82 brightened up the evening by holding their Junior Prom. The tension was mounting when the advisors came to the floor to announce the King and Queen of the prom. The Queen was Kathy Petonito and the King Ricky Cascio. The first runners up were Linda Laurello and John Amendola. The rest of the Royal Court consisted of Denise Hill, Ricky Bias, Michele Leona, Mike Marvel, Doreen Clyne and Gary Corso. As the evening came to an end and couples were ready to say good- night, everyone felt that These Were The Best Of Times. The Ski Club is composed of both expert and novice skiers who favor the daring winter sport. This club seems to be one of the most popular in the school. MODEL UN Sponsored annually by Yale University, the Yale Model United Nations gives many students valuable experience in the deliberation of matters of international concern. Each High School represents a different country. Students are responsible for the writing of resolutions which are then debated by various committees. The Educational Center for the Arts is located in the Arts Center in New Haven. Students from area high schools are accepted to ECA on the basis of their interests and abilities in the various arts.
