We often seem to have All the answers Only to have new questions Arise. We all will choose Our own paths — Career, college, marriage, Military — but still Around every corner There may exist a new life, A new road. Now we will leave To follow that road We have chosen To lead us to our destiny. The 1981 East Haven High School Pioneer Is Dedicated To Mr. Arnold Cestari Mr. Cestan has dedicated his last twenty seven years to the welfare of the children of East Haven. While he is deeply concerned about the intellectual accomplishments of the student body, he is also interested in all extra curricular activities. He attends all athletic activities, social events, and always has a word of encouragement for his students. In the day-to-day operation of the high school, he is always visible in the corridors and is always available to discuss problems with students. His genuine interest in the affairs of students and faculty, makes him easy to approach and help with any solutions to various and sundry problems. The responsibilities of managing a high school of 1600 students is a tremendous undertaking. Mr. Cestari does an outstanding job and is well-liked by both the staff and the student body. The dedication of this yearbook to Mr. Cestari is indeed fitting and proper, a recognition that he will cherish for many years to come. SH0IN3S MIKE NARRACCI ASST. Class Of 1981 ° Respectfully submitted; Missy Antonelli 77-79, Lisa Moore 79-80, Cheryl Cianelli 80-81 CLASS HISTORY Freshman Year In September of 1977 we began our freshman year. We were filled with fear and anticipation. We had many questions that needed answering. Will 1 enjoy high school? Will the work be hard? Will I be accepted by the kids from other schools? Before we knew it, our first month had passed and some of our fears were disappearing. We were well into our freshman year and we were enjoying it. We started the year with the following officers: Michael Luzzi, president; Gary Ardito, vice-president; Lisa De-Marseilles, secretary; Joann Imperati, treasurer; Jackie Amarone, asst, treasurer; and Mary Antonelli, historian. Our class advisors were Mr. William Iovanna, Mr. Paul Bello, Miss Mary Ann Stanisz, Miss Margaret Sheehan and Mr. Dennis Krajewski. They soon became our friends and counselors. Their thoughts, advice and opinions were appreciated and accepted gladly. Our fund raiser for the freshman year was a cake sale. Many events took place during our freshman year. The Physical Education Club was very active. In December its members performed in a Christmas show for East Haven's seniors citizens. The P.E. Club also sponsored a swimming and basketball marathon. The proceeds went to the American Cancer Society. An event held during our freshman year by the Drama Club was Go Ask Alice . Also, a gong show was sponsored by the senior class. The Ski Club sponsored many trips this year. One was a weekend trip to Mt. Ascutney, VT. and another one was to Saas-Fee Switzerland. Our band went to Nashville, Tenn. where they attended the Sounds of American Band festivals. Suddenly June arrived. Our freshman year was over. We now looked forward to our sophomore year which would bring us more surprises and more excitement. Sophomore Year We started our sophomore year with much hope and less fear. We had survived our freshman year and we now considered ourselves veterans of East Haven High School. Our sophomore year was a year of hard work, and a time in which life long friendships were being formed. Our new officers for the year were Michael Luzzi, president; Gary Ardito, vice-president; Maria Ferraro, secretary; Joann Imperati, treasurer; Jackie Amarone, asst, treasurer; and Mary Antonelli, historian. We ran many successful fund raisers that year, including two cake sales and a cake raffle. Also, we held a car wash at East Haven Town Hall, washing about one hundred cars. By the end of the day, we went home exhausted and soaking wet. In June, we had a successful candy sale, thanks to the large number of candy-hungry students. In addition to these fund raisers, we conducted a photo drive, open to all students. The Phys. Ed. Club was again very active in our sophomore year. They held their annual Christmas show for the senior citizens. They also held their annual sports marathon which included basketball, bowling, swimming, and roller skating. The ski club sponsored a trip to Mt. Snow, VT. in January. Everyone had a marvelous time with no broken limbs. On Dec. 1st a toga dance was held, sponsored by the Senior Executive Board. The third annual Broom Hockey Game was held in March. The senior class played the high school faculty. Our sophomore year was coming to a close and we now had the job of choosing our class rings. Finally another year ended and we looked forward to our junior year which would go by faster than the past two years had. Junior Year When we started our junior year we had no idea how fast it would soon go by. In October of 1979 we received our class rings. It seemed as if everywhere we looked, people were turning each other's rings; and of course we saved the last turn for someone special. We opened the junior year with the following officers: Angela Piccerillo, president; Gary Ardito, vice-president; Lisa DeMarseilles, secretary; Joann Imperati, treasurer; Mary Antonelli, asst, treasurer, and Lisa Moore, historian. Our biggest event that year was our Junior Prom. The prom was held at Restland Farms on April 18, 1980. The entertainment for the prom was provided by the Royal Knights. The theme was Forever . The committee for this memorable event was: Andrea Barucci(chairman), Cheryl Cianelli(chairman), Lisa Moore(chairman), Angela Piccerillo, Laura Calabrese, Lisa DeMarseilles, Maria Ferraro, Barbara Fitzgibbon, Lori Giglio, Mary Foley, Joann Imperati, Terri-Ann King, Gary Ardito, Michael Narracci, William Higgins, and Murray Ruggiero. The King and Queen were Sal Popolizio and Gail Gersz. The prom went smoothly and was a great success. The after-prom was held at Our Lady of Pompeii church. It was sponsored by the rotary club. The hall was decorated with bright lights and it looked like a discoteque. There were sandwiches and beverages. The next day everyone went to a picnic. By afternoon everyone was exhausted from the night before and the fun they had that day. To help pay for the prom, our class sponsored many fund raisers. We sold Easter bunnies at Easter with the 72 saying “a bunny for your honey . We again had student pictures taken. We also sold candy. The summer before our junior year we had another car wash. The most outstanding event that year was East Haven's basketball team's winning the All-Housatonic League. Their winning game was against Branford with a score of 81-50. They won a class L champion title with a game against East Catholic, which ended with a score of 70-56. At the end of our junior year, the yearbook staff was announced. The co-editors were Mary Foley and Lisa Moore. Also announced was the Honor Society. The induction ceremony was held in May. Boy s State and Girl's State were also announced. Representing the boys were Michael Luzzi, Lou DeNegre, Mark Gargano, William Higgins, Fred Lynn and Dave Bell. They attended the Coast Guard Academy. Representing the girls were Cheryl Cianelli and Kathy Dillon. The Physical Education Club again held its annual sports marathon. They also sponsored a volleyball tournament between the classes. The senior class won. The band was very active this year and played faithfully at every home game. This year they took a trip to Kings Dominion in Virginia. The Student Council held a Valentines Day dance. The Drama Club this year performed Gods Favorite . The play was a success. The ski club this year went to Sugarbush in Vermont. The junior year was now at its end. Everyone was looking forward to their last year, which would be filled with both joy and sadness. Senior Year Our last year at high school had finally arrived. Do you remember how this year looked so far away when we were freshman? We couldn't even imagine being seniors but we had finally made it. It seemed that everything happened so fast. Our senior year held a lot of expectations. We opened our senior year with the following officers: Joann Imperati, president; Angela Piccerillo, vice president; Maria Ferraro, secretary; Mary Antonelli, Treasurer; Mike Narracci, asst, treasurer; Cheryl Cianelli, historian. This year seniors had a choice of an English IV course and or English electives. It worked out well. It gave us a variety in English and a chance to take courses in which we had a real interest. We opened our senior year without a lunch or breakfast program and without a late bus. This caused much inconvenience and confusion, with much protest and controversy. On January 12th the school resumed its breakfast and late bus programs. The lunch program did not return. We sponsored many fund raisers during our senior year. We sold lollipops, in the shape of cats, for Halloween. That year we also sold Class of 81 Keychains, which were made of clear plastic. In November we raffled off two turkeys. In December we sold candy. At Easter time we sold candy. Another event that we held was a spaghetti supper. A Broom Hockey Game provided another opportunity for students to play the teachers. The Honor Society also ran a raffle. Tickets were sold before the football game for a football. The Physcial Ed. Club was very active in our senior year. Members had their annual candy sale. A Super Sports Marathon was held in our senior year. The events included roller skating, swimming, bowling, basketball, and dancing. They also sponsored a swim meet between elementary schools. Another event held was a two-on two basketball tournament. Both boys and girls partici pa ted. Some special extra-curricular activities that were available to us during our senior year were: Yale-New Haven Hospital Volunteer Program and the University of New Haven Outstanding Senior Program. Michael Alfieri and Kathy Dillon were selected for the UNH program. On November 22, our senior class sponsored a powder puff football game. It was originally scheduled against Branford but Branford couldn't make it so it was played against the alumni of East Haven High School. Our senior year offered many sports activities. Our football team had a good season filled with exciting games. One of the most exciting games was the Thanksgiving game. At that game we beat Branford with the score of 27 to 6. The team closed the season with a record of 4-7. Our soccer team won their first game that season, which was well deserved and was followed by two other wins, giving it a record of 3-12. Our basketball team had a good season although many of their stars had graduated the year before. They played consistently well. The hockey team had a successful season also with a string of consecutive wins. Both of our swimming teams had good seasons. The girls broke Amity's Housatonic League winninq streak of 44 straight meets. Michael Narracci, a member of the boys swimming team, set two records. Our senior prom was held May 29th, at Restland Farms, the co-chairpersons for the prom were Angela Piccerillo and Michael Narracci. The night was an event which will be remembered always. The Senior Luncheon finally arrived, which meant graduation was only a few days away. At the luncheon everyone received yearbooks and proceeded to ex change their signatures while reminiscing about the past four years. The final day came at last. Proud of our accomplishment and filled with great expectations, we walked across Crisafi field. Our parents and relatives watched in silent pride while we received our diplomas. With our diplomas went many beautiful and unforgettable memories. We are now beginning a new challenge of the adult world. 7 THE GOOD TIMES . . . A friend is ... A friend is like a golden gift ... That makes the whole day brighter ... A friend can give a little lift ... That makes a burden lighter ... Life is full of lovely things ... But best of all are these ... The happiness that . .. Friends can bring-The gold of memories. Senior year for many of us is our last school year. For others it is the beginning, of going on to school to accomplish our future goals. Whether it be in college or business, we will become our own persons, free to make our own decisions. It is hard to believe that this final year, which we have so looked forward to, has come to a fast end. To some of us, leaving high school will be hard to accept-seeing some of your friends for the last time. When September rolls around we will have gone our separate ways, planning our futures and making new friends. Life must go on. However, we are certainly not coming away from our Senior year empty-handed. We have gotten something more from high school than just a diploma. The memories, the laughs, the friendships, and the good times we have shared together, all are never to be forgotten .. . 74 During our high school years there were some disadvantages to growing older. The first responsibility many of us had to face was getting jobs. With inflation we all needed extra spending money to use toward many senior ex-penses-gas, clothes, movies, food etc. Fortunately many of us were able to get jobs right in the East Haven area. The town's location offered a wide choice of part-time work. When shopping Cal-dors, K-Mart, Bradlees, you're sure to see a senior classmate working. However, some of us could not get jobs because of involvement in school activities and some students busied themselves with jobs within the school. So whether it was a school-related or a part-time job, we all seem to have the same feeling, It's tough growing up. Though school is important, we all enjoy the time we have outside of school. Many of us use this time to break away from the studying routine and really let loose. It is a time to sleep late or stay out late. Some of the activities that seniors enjoy during their night life are the movies, rollerskating, McDonalds' after the big game, concerts, or just doing the things they like to do most. But whether they spend their time home or out, weekends were made to ENJOY. 78 The best thing about turning sweet sixteen was getting our licenses. We all looked forward to the day we would be able to drive. Some had their own cars or borrowed the family car. But whatever, it was great! Oh, it had its drawbacks-gas, insur ance, repairs-but it was worthwhile. It meant more freedom to go to our jobs, Eastie games and out with friends. It was a responsibility for an expensive piece of machinery not to be taken lightly but to be enjoyed. A SPECIAL PLACE . . Our rooms have become an important part of our lives. They have been a place to go when we needed time to think or just relax in our own little world. They were places where we didn't have to keep up any images or make any impressions. We could just be ourselves. Many of us furnished our rooms according to our own personal tastes reflecting our individual life-styles. Almost every room in East Haven consisted of some type of entertainment, such a T.V.'s, radios and stereos. For some the telephone was a crucial need on which many of us would spend hours. Solitude has been a necessary factor in our years of growing up and our rooms were always there to offer that comfort when we needed them. 80 Th4nk God for little m cowboy! INDEX EDITOR Barbara Fitzgibbon In March of 1980, thirty people were selected for the 1981 yearbook staff consisting of both seniors and juniors. This year we had a new advisor, Mr. Neil Sullivan, who would, along with us, learn what it was like to produce a yearbook. The next fourteen months would be a learning experience for the whole staff. Under the supervision of Mr. Sullivan, and the leadership of co-editors, Mary Foley and Lisa Moore, we began to create a book that would contain memories of our high school years. First, we had to pick a theme and then we could begin constructing the book. It was all hard work and we never had a moment's rest until the last layout was finished, the last copy was typed, and the last page was sent out. Through it all we feel we have successfully put together a book that will let our high school years remain forever in our memories. The main goal of the club is to promote physical education within the school and throughout the town. This club also holds many functions as a community service; for, example, in March they held a Super Sports Marathon for the Easter Seals. A swim meet was held between elementary schools in April to create competition and school spirit. In March, a two-on-two tournament and all around athlete event were held among the East Haven High School students. One of the popular club functions was the C.P.R. course held for administrators and students. The East Haven High School is proud because of the Phys. Ed. Club's successful functions held throughout the year. OFFICERS AND ADVISORS Michael Narracci-pres.; Michael Luzzi-vice pres.; Mr. Stephen Nar-racci-advisor; Julie Albmger-sec. treas. Band, continuing in the excellence which has made it one of the most renowned bands in the state, began practicing in preparation for the marching and playing which they would be doing during the rest of the year. The halftime shows during the football season were performed with precision and skill, reflecting the hours of practice put into each show. The band could be seen at the pep rallies helping to enhance the spirit of the students. The band, having established one of the school's most important and significant organizations, made great contributions to the community during the school year 1980-1981. DEBBIE HOFFMAN 100 GINGER BOURGEOIS --- SPARE TIME-- STUDENT COUNCIL STUDENT COUNCIL There was a great change in the Student Council this year. After a surprisingly large turn out of dedicated students, the Student Council members were able to run a successful Halloween Dance and Button Drive. A busy schedule is ahead for the '80-'81 school year. The Council's only crisis occurred during the beginning of the school year. A debate concerning the late bus and breakfast lunch program developed with the parents and students against the school board. Finally, to start the new year right, E.H.H.S. now has a late bus and breakfast program. The officers credited much of their success to their advisors- Ms. Bassetti, Mr. Argento, and Mr. Cohen.
