Department, students may participate in several extracurricular activities: Yale Model United Nations and the North Haven Model Congress, Mr. DiStasio; and the American Legion Oratorical Contest, Mr. Platt. The participants in the North Haven Model Congress meet students from other high schools in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New York. Student participants determine which committee they would like to serve on. They will then propose, debate, and vote on legislation. The format follows the actual legislative procedure of the state and federal levels, and therefore gives students variable experience in government. To participate in the Oratorical Contest, students are required to prepare an eight to ten minute essay and present it orally before a panel of judges. This competition also includes a three to five minute extemporaneous discourse in which the participant must answer questions asked by the judges without prepared notes. ILONA SYPNIEWSKI 27

Computer math, now in its second year, introduces students to computer programming using A.P.L. (A Programming Language). Under the instruction of Miss Gudzik, students use the computer to solve numerical problems and learn what a computer is capable of doing. The two terminals at the high school are tied into the computer at Yale University. Math teachers and department head, Mr. Anthony DellaVentura encourage students to participate in math contests offered six times a year. These competitions, under the direction of Miss Panico and Mr. Cannavaciolo, involve different categories of mathematics, modern geometry and algebra. Area schools compete against one another at a designated school which sponsors the contest. The department also sponsors a Math Club, advised by Miss Panico and Mr. Alderman.
