English Mr. Roger Shapiro, the English Department chairman, describes the staff of English teachers as a group of “extremely competent people who are striving to reach their teaching goals.” Members of the department organize and advise many extra-curricular activities: Creative writing, Mrs. Dempsey; the school newspaper, Mr. Augustine; Drama Club, Mr. Scaramella; and the Pioneer, Mr. Meoli. The Creative Writing Club publishes a literary magazine, Twig which contains stories and poems submitted by the students from the club and the English classes. During the ’77-’78 school year, the English curriculum experienced a major change. Half-year electives were offered to seniors only. The standard English III became a

responsibility of efficienty operating the high school. His experienced direction touches upon every department of the school and its activities. He receives valuable assistance from Miss Mary Rocco who coordinates all curriculum and approves schedule changes or revisions. The efficient scheduling of classes would not be possible without the expertise of Mr. John Mezzanotte. He adjusts every schedule so that it will fit properly with the courses offered during a semester. requirement for all juniors. This change is part of the emphasis placed upon the basics of English which include vocabulary, composition, and reading comprehension. The English III curriculum contains the study of American Literature. Classics such as Moby Dick and The Scarlet Letter arc read and discussed. A Shakespearean play is also included. The poetic lines of Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet are once again recited in the class room. The department now offers four years (3 levels) of standard English as well as the senior electives which range from Journalism to Classical Mythology. Journalism students are responsible for the publication of the Comet newsletter. Mythology students become involved in the study of Greek and Roman myths about gods and that heroes that have influenced today’s literature and art.
