Mr. Arnold Cestari was the goalie for the faculty and Frank Imperato for the student body. Each year members of the class would sign up, and costumes and antics would add to the craziness of the game. For the next two years the Broom Hockey Game became a part of the class' fund raising activities, and each year an enjoyable time was shared by both players and spectators. JUNIOR PROM APRIL 9, 1976 “DREAM ON The Class of '77 Junior Prom headed by chairmen Kathy Clark and Evelyn Gallagher was a total success, due to the efforts of the fine prom committee and hard-working advisors. On April 9, 1976, 154 couples arrived at Bill Miller's Dance Studio in formal attire. As people began entering the beautifully designed studio, word spread quickly that the band scheduled would not show up. After the initial shock, couples enjoyed music provided by tapes and records and radio station WPLR, despite the problem. King Albert Vollono and Queen Donna Pace added to the thrill of the evening. The Queen's court consisted of Linda Cacace, Diane Mattie, Kathy Clark, and Mary Murphy, while the King's court consisted of Dave Frisco, Larry Acquarulo, Tom Hennessey, and Mike Amento. At midnight, an after prom began at the Knight's of Columbus Hall, sponsored by the East Haven Rotary Club. The night ended at 3 a.m., with memories never to be forgotten. 132 HALLOWEEN 76 One of the original activities the senior class sponsored this year was a Halloween costume day, on which any member of the student body was requested to come to school in Halloween costumes. An assembly was held for seniors where the senior class officers judged costumes. Our own Mr. Cestari was emcee and also came dressed for the occasion. Judy Myers was the contest winner dressed as a wolf. Finalists were: Dori Moore and Louie Pellino, Debbie Berner, J. B. Adrag-na and Pam Salvati, and Dom Celoto. A good time was enjoyed by all and we hope other classes will continue this school spirited activity. HISTORY CLASS OF 1977 FRESHMAN YEAR Being the first class to graduate from the new East Haven High School after four years with all its new features, including a pool and a new wing was quite an honor for the class of 1977. Also, a new Athletic Complex was built at the Middle School. It included a football field and a Hockey rink. Nonetheless, we were anxious and a little frightened about attending high school as the freshman class of East Haven High School. Elections were held in October and Peggy Landino was elected President. Assisting her was Jeannine Molitierno as Vice-President, along with Britta Selmquist as Secretary, Judy Myers as Treasurer, Cathy Parente as Assistant Treasurer and Evelyn Gallagher as Historian. The class of 1977 was on its way to a new start under the guidance and leadership of our fine advisors: Ms. Judy Gudzik, Ms. Janet Stopka, Mr. Lawrence Hally, Mrs. Teresa Vitale, and Mr. Joseph Pas-cale. Many cake sales and raffles were held throughout the year in order to raise money for our class, and by the end of the year we managed to raise a good deal of money. Freshman Football, Basketball, and Baseball all had fine seasons and each team looked forward to playing junior varsity sports next year. Cheerleading tryouts were held in May and those chosen for Junior Varsity Cheerleaders were: Captain Lynn Castellon, Evelyn Gallagher, Laurie Finnegan, Cindy Lecza, and Judy Myers. Before we knew it, ten months had passed before us. Our first year of high school taught us a great deal, but there was still much more ahead of us. SOPHOMORE YEAR Our second year in high school began much differently than our freshman year. Without the lectures and assemblies on high school life, we knew what was to be expected of us. We started a year which was to turn out as one of the most successful years for the class of 1977. Elections were held in the fall, and changes were made. A1 Brasile was elected as President, with Peggy Landino as Vice-President, Britta Selmquist as Secretary, Judy Myers as Treasurer, and Evelyn Gallagher as Historian . The executive board was formed and they began to work early on planning events and activities for the year. Our officers met in conference with our advisors and our principal, Mr. Arnold Ces-tari, to try and appeal the rule which stated that only upperclassmen may have a dance with a live band. They were successful and plans began to hold our dance sometime in early spring. However, before we could hold our dance the class needed to raise some money. As in our previous year cake sales were held and also a first for EHHS a Sophomore Class Broom Hockey game was scheduled for March, 1975. The students vs. the faculty with Mr. Arnold Cestari in the nets for the faculty and Frank Imperato goaltending for the students. The game resulted in a 2-2 tie and money raised was a big boost for our class treasury. Along came our dance on April 4, 1975. We had a successful turnout. With the band, Copyright, a good time was enjoyed by all. The last fund raising activity held by our Sophomore Class was a car wash held at the town hall. Some $70.00 was raised. In sports, many boys and girls received their letters in one, two, or even three sports. Most started on Junior Varsity teams and some even on Varsity teams. There was no doubt that the class of 1977 was athletically inclined. Larry Acquarulo won first place decathalon, the first in all of the decathalon's thirteen years it was ever won by a sophomore. Lynn Castellon, Evelyn Gallagher, Maria Pane, Cindy Lecza, Gail Viscuso, and Laurie Finnegan were the juniors chosen for Varsity Cheerleading. Chosen for Junior Varsity were: Kathy Clark, Mary Ellen DiMezza, and Judy Myers, who was chosen captain. The end of our second year in high school had come. Soon we would be starting our third and important year. JUNIOR YEAR Changes had been made in the high school administration, Mr. Phil Costello was now principal. Our Junior year was one of fun and production. We had reached our third year of high school and it was one of great importance . Elections were held in October with A1 Brasile re-elected as President, Peggy Landino as Vice-President, Judy Myers as Treasurer and Evelyn Gallagher as Historian. One new member was elected: Lynn Castellon as Secretary. Also held in October was the election for the prom committee chairman and co-chairman. These two spots were elect by our executive board and chosen were: Kathy Clark - Chairman and Evelyn Gallagher-Co-Chairman. Subcommittees were formed and work began for our Junior Prom. The date was set for April 9, 1976 and it was held at Bill Miller's Dance Studio in Branford. The song chosen for the theme by the class was ' 'Dream On'' by Aerosmith. All went well throughout the year with only minor complications confronted. One hundred fifty-four bids were sold, the most ever sold by any Junior Class. However, one large problem 169 arose the evening of the prom. The band that was scheduled to play had broken up the week before the prom and their manager had never re-scheduled another band. Despite the mishap the class of '77 enjoyed a very successful prom. A1 Vollono was chosen as king and Donna Pace was chosen as queen. The After-Prom sponsored by the East Haven chapter of the Rotary Club was held at the Knights of Columbus Hall in East Haven with music supplied by Victorian Flight. Another Broom Hockey game was held at the East Haven Rink and the Faculty vs. the Juniors resulted in a tie once more. The game was a great success with Mr. Cestari and Frank Imperato as returning goalies. In May of 1976 the Pioneer staff was chosen. It consisted of 14 students chosen by the class to produce the 1977 Pioneer. Editors-in-Chief were: Kathy Clark and Dori Moore, with Jean Onyski and Jeannine Molitierno as layout editors, Peggy Landino and Diane Mat-tie as advertising editors, Katie McGuire and Linda Cacace as photography editors, Laura Pascale and Doug Jackson as write-up editors , Debbie Berner and Jeff Kubala as copy editors, Loraine Bennett and Ralph Rosato as sports editors, and Patty Ross as typing editor. Sportwise the years of 1975-1976 were very successful. The football team finished with a 5-6 season. The basketball team proved to be dynamic, with the assistance of Juniors Mike DeSena and Billy Parker. The team finished with a 22-2 season. Hockey also finished successful. They finished with a record of 19-8-1, and played in the State Championships at the Coliseum. This team also staged a trip to Finland and Sweeden which was enjoyed by all. Cheerleading try-outs were held in May and ten seniors were chosen as varsity cheerleaders: Evelyn Gallagher, captain, Kathy Clark, Lynn Castellon, Laurie Finnegan, Cindy Lecza, Judy Myers, MaryEllen Di-Mezza, Debby Kornitsky, Maria Pane and Gail Viscuso. Linda Cacace and Jeannine Molitierno were chosen as Laurel Girl's State Representatives and Michael DeSena, Francis Albis, Jeff Kubala, Billy Parker and Larry Acquar-ulo were chosen as Boy's State Representatives . The end of a very successful year had come and the year to follow was long awaited by many of us. SENIOR YEAR With quite a record of accomplishments behind us, the Seniors of 'll returned to school in September with high hopes of a successful and rewarding year ahead. Elections of senior officers brought some new faces to the Executive Board. A1 Brasile was re-elected as President, Mike DeSena was elected Vice-president, Judy Myers Treasurer, Linda Acri Secretary, and Evelyn Gallagher Historian. The first senior activity held was a Welcome Back dance early in September. Although it was a financial failure, it was a social success. In October, the Senior Class once again held a magazine drive. Response was overwhelming and helped to add to the senior treasury. Prize winners for the most subscriptions money sold went to Leigh Pis-citelli, Jeannine Molitierno, Mary Hippman and Laura Pascale. The football team led by captain Billy Parker had a successful season (7-3) with their biggest win coming against previously undefeated Derby. Elected to the All-Housy team were seniors Billy Parker, Sal Garitta, Michael Tullo and Pete Costa. The Cross Country Team led by captains Mike Esposito and Jeff Kubala, finished with a 5-9 record and senior Mike Esposito was the first harrier in the history of EHHS to be elected to the All-Housy team. Basketball season came along quickly and proved fairly successful for the Easties, under captain Mike DeSena. The Hockey Team once again finished with a successful season winning the Housy title by beating undefeated Chsehire at their rink for the first time in three years. Under senior co-captains Rick Clauss and A1 Vollono, the Hockey Team went on to the tournament. Girl's sports made a comeback after some early difficulties and went on to prove rewarding. Volleyball under captain Loraine Bennett finished 2-12 and Basketball also captained by Loraine, finished the season with an improving but disappointing record with hopes for the future. The Yearbook Staff worked diligently all year to provide a successful yearbook for the class and the prom committee began early working on the senior prom under Janet Car-angelo and Linda Acri as co-chairmen. The date was set for June 2, 1977 at Restland Farms and the Richard Neal Orchestra provided the music. Reasons , by Earth, Wind and Fire was chosen as our theme. The Senior Prom was a warm and memorable evening experienced by all. The Senior Luncheon was also held at Rest-land Farms and the yearbook Staff handed out the greatly anticipated 1977 Pioneer. After four years of hard work and devotion, the Class of 1977 walked on to Frank Crisafi Field to graduate. That evening brought many tears of joy and memories of our years at East Haven High School. With the anticipation of success and fulfillment to await us in the future, the Class of 1977 walked past parents , teachers and friends who had loved and influenced our lives so much, to begin lives of our own. We feel we have obtained our goal. We wish to extend our sincere thanks to all who made this book possible including the highly unique photographic abilities of Mr. Larry McBreaty and Mr. Sal DeRosa. Their patience and kindness are also deeply appreciated. Also, many thanks to Mr. Bruce Dupuis of the American Yearbook Company for his help and assistance throughout the year. We would also like to thank Mr. A1 Pellegrino of the Edward Malley Company management, who helped see us through a difficult time. The credit for this book belongs to the exceptionally hard working and devoted staff. Their rare talents are exhibited frequently through out the book. Special thanks and grattitude go to our tremendous advisor and good friend Mr. Frank Meoli. Without his assurance and guidance this book would not have been possible. We appreciate all he has done for us and we hope the yearbook staffs to follow will be as fortunate as we were. Thanks to All, Kathy Clark Dori Moore Editors-in-chief 208 • . a . 1 3 S P « 1 • VS , % ■ % . • •■ . - .A -•... - • - - ' r —1 ' r r • f: r. t • '-• vv « ■•'■ • • - • • -• • ■ ■- '7'-v' .•• ’ • - ...............................-•■ - - •-.. .-....- vS4 V • • « • 4 . + X V. ■ %1 «• % JF • 4 - “A F • . • x ' • +.
