. Fortunate is the person whose life is like a circle, for he touches upon all the experiences surrounding him, which are unknown to those who live in a straight line. Every personal relationship is like a circle in that it revolves around an axis of sharing. pioneer 75 East Haven High School East HavenPConnecticui In striving for perfection, a man's vision should be as complete as the circle formed by the pupil of his eye. He would then be able to witness all aspects of life's events objectively, for a circle knows no limits. wards universal harmony As ten millions of circles can never make a square, so the united voice of myriads cannot lend the smallest foundation to falsehood. DEDICATION The Class of 1975 dedicates this year's Pioneer to Mr. John Mezzanotte and Mr. John Villano. Their contributions to our class have been great and our lives have been enriched by having known these two men. JOHN MEZZANOTTE Let man judge the success in his life by what he has done for others; for by doing for others, he has done for himself. JOHN VILLANO seniors A circle may be small, yet it is as mathematically beautiful and perfect as a large one. In this sense, people are like circles .. different in appearance, but nonetheless equal. 9 SENIOR ADVISORS JOHN ALBIS RICHARD CASSIEY JUDITH SICCAMA EDWARD AHERN SENIOR EXECUTIVE BOARD FRONT ROW L. I'm sure that none of us will ever forget the first few days which were filled with unfamiliar faces and uncertainties. The Sophomore Class could not offer much assistance, as it was also their first year in the High School. Together the two classes made up the afternoon session and we hardly ever saw the upper classmen. Officers for the class that year were as follows: President, Nancy DiMauro; Vice President, Patty Cacace; Secretary, Audrey Leona; Treasurer, Lisa Biondi; Assistant Treasurer, Joanne Matteo; and Historian, Karen Walsh. Our advisors were, Mr. R. Cassiey; Mrs. J. Siccama; and Mr. J. Albis. Sports fans saw a rather good performance from all the athletes that year in which the Football Team had a 5 4 won lost record, Swim Team, 9-6; and the Basketball Team finished 12-7. Also, the Track Team had 2-10 record and the Baseball Team saw a 8-7 close. As time moved on and the faculty and students became more accustomed to the schedule, our fund raising activities were begun. During the week of December 20 through 23, a Christmas card delivery service was sponsored by the Freshman and Sophomore classes. Other activities throughout the year included raffles, cake sales, and a Freshman-Sophomore Dance entitled Friends . It was a very appropriate theme since many of us made friends that year which would last throughout our lives. The year came quickly to a close and after the summer vacation we were ready to face another school year. SOPHOMORE YEAR 1972-1973 Our Sophomore year was to hold little change for us except that a new class of Freshmen entered. Since our class was still in the P.M. Session, having been left by the Juniors, we were the ones who the newcomers looked up to. Elections held at the end of our Freshman year resulted in several new officers for our Sophomore Class. Our new President was Patti Burgh; Vice President, Jennifer Parker; Secretary, Audrey Leona; Treasurer, Lisa Biondi, Assistant Treasurer, Joanne Matteo; and Historian, Karen Walsh. We had the same hard-working advisors with us again and we were grateful that we did. It was time to start thinking seriously about expanding our treasury to help pay for graduation and other senior activities which we would encounter in the future. We did this by having turkey and cake raffles and other sales which gave our class sizeable profits. In sports, the football team ended up with a 6-3-1 record; Swimming was 7-8; Basketball, 13-8; Track, 3-10; and Baseball, 6-11. Girls' athletic teams were finally brought back to the High School after a long struggle for recognition and equality with boys' teams. They really made East Haven proud of them because of their enthusiasm and success. Before we knew it, another year of high school had passed us by and we were to start full day sessions beginning in our Junior Year. JUNIOR YEAR 1973-1974 Our Junior year greeted us with a new schedule and all four classes attending school together. This proved to be uncomfortable in the beginning since we were used to seeing the halls fairly empty. However, we were reunited with the Senior Class with whom we had been alone during our first year and hardly recognized some faces that were unseen for a year. It was easy to get lost in the halls, not only because of the over abundance of students, but also because the new wing was opened and put to use for science, business, and history classes, including a well equipped Media Center. The old rooms were repainted in awakening colors which surprised many of the students and faculty because we were all so used to the conventional green . The only new officers elected for the Junior year were. Vice President, Cindy Pickup; and Secretary, Michelle Montesanto. We also acquired a new advisor, Mr. E. 147 Ahearn. Some highlights that year were the opening of the Sports Complex at the Middle School, a new lunch program which provided for five lunch breaks, and the schedule itself, which was changed several times due to the energy crisis and new programs. That year, the Football Team finished 6-4; Swim Team 8-6-1; Basketball 8-10; and the first year Hockey Team did well with 14-4-1. Girls' Sports were on an upswing and went strong throughout the season. Their Basketball Team even played in the CIAC Tournament. Probably the most memorable thing in our Junior year was the Prom. This exciting event, entitled A Time For Us , was held on April 19, from 8 P.M. until midnight at the Laurel View Country Club, Hamden. Having been voted upon by the Junior Class, the queen of the prom was Michelle Montesanto, with Eddie Monaco as her king. The music was provided by Brotherhood . The After Prom, which was sponsored by the East Haven Rotary Club, took place at the East Haven Knights of Columbus Hall from 12 til 3 A.M. with New England Jam as the band. Again, not even realizing how quickly time went by, the year was coming-lo a dose, and we could JTardJy.believe-that Qur last-year of high school was jus around .the’ cor- Hi • • • . • i SENIOR YEAR 1974-1975- • •• .;.• We had arrived. The year was one for friends, good times, serious planning, learning, deciding, and finally, one for leaving. The halls and rooms that once seemed so foreign to us were now all too familiar as we walked through them without any uneasiness. Because of our upcoming graduation and other activities, that year was probably the busiest along with being the most fun. From the beginning of the year, the Pioneer Staff worked at compiling material for our yearbook. Fund raising activities came in great numbers. Then meetings, assemblies, and just plain enthusiasm prevailed as the year passed by. The officers elected for the year were. President, Linda Bysiewicz; Vice President, Cindy Pickup; Secretary, Michelle Montesanto; Treasurer. Lisa Biondi; Assistant Treasurer, Joanne Matteo; and Historian, Daina Zemliauskas. In Sports that year our Seniors put their best efforts into all the teams. The records were: Football, 4-7; Hockey, 14-3-1; Basketball, 13-5; and Swimming, 13-5. Both the Basketball Team and the Hockey Team qualified for the CIAC Tournament and both made fine showings. The members of the Swim Team broke ten of eleven previous school records. The Girls' Teams also had a very successful year and again the Basketball Team played in the Tournament. On June 6, our Senior Prom entitled We May Never Pass This Way Again was held at Valles Steak House in West Haven. Richard Neals' Orchestra provided the music and our Prom lasted from 7:30 til midnight. We all shared a beautiful and enjoyable evening. Our Senior Class Luncheon was at Amarante's. The yearbooks were distributed, the dedication announced, and both students and faculty alike had a busy day writing and bidding sad farewells. Finally, in June, the Class of 1975 graduated at the Frank Crisafi Field with a mixture of emotions. Some relieved, . sorpe sad, but all leaving with our own memories of joys • and sorrows that we will cling to and think upon through-.’ out out lives. Respectfully submitted, Daina Zemliauskas, Historian and you want to get moving and you want to stay still, but lost in the movement some longing gets filled — Joni Mitchell advertising If a community is to be as unified as a circle, there must be cooperation between merchant and patron. Student Photographers Contributing Pictures: Brad Smith Vin Rapuano Mark Acevedo Curt Kronberg 175 IN APPRECIATION It was the wish of the 1975 Pioneer staff to create a yearbook which reflected all the students of East Haven High School. We feel we accomplished this and to the extent that we were aided by members of the student body we thank them. We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the entire faculty and administration for their patience and understanding. Of course, we are deeply indebted to our photographer, Mr. Larry McBrearty. His photographic ability and concern for us are in evidence throughout this book. Our thanks also to Mr. Joseph Cohen, who also contributed photographs. Acknowledgement and thanks must also go to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Brown of the American Publishing Co. for their understanding and guidance in the obstacles we encountered. Finally, a special thanks to each member of the yearbook staff for a job well done. Each one contributed in his or her own way to make this book a success. However, no one worked harder on this yearbook than our advisor Mr. Frank Meoli. His enthusiasm and dedication never failed and we are grateful for having had the opportunity to work with such a good advisor and friend.
