PIONEER 1974 EAST HAVEN HIGH SCHOOL EAST HAVEN, CONNECTICUT Ideals are-like stars. You will not succeed in touching them with your hands, but like the sea-faring man on the desert of waters, you choose them as your guide and following them decide upon the direction you must take. DEDICATION A teacher affects eternity, he can never tell where his influence stops. Honest men esteem and value nothing so much in this world as a real friend. Such a one is as it were another self, to whom we impart our secret thoughts, who partakes of our joy, and comforts us in our affliction; add to this that his company is an everlasting pleasure. JOSEPH COHEN MATTHEW TIERNEY We need some imaginative stimulus, some not impossible ideal such as may shape vague hope, and transform it into effective desire, to carry us year after year, without disgust, through the routine work which is so large a part of life. CLASS SOPHOMORE YEAR 1971-1972 In September 1971 we began our first year in the High School. Our school day lasted from twelve noon to five p.m. as we were members of the P.M. Session. With us that year was the Class of '75, the first Freshmen class in the school since 1957. Unlike traditional years, where new classes enter the school with shaking knees afraid of domineering Seniors, the Class of '74 entered a school that was undergoing change and expansion. The adjustment was difficult for both students and faculty alike. Our class advisors, chosen to guide us through the year, were Mrs. Reynolds, Miss Sanderson, and Mr. Nucolo. In the fall, elections were held for our class officers. Toni Coc-chiaro, President; Tammy Kruchok, Vice-President; Lauren Cook, Treasurer; Debby Gambardella, Ass t Treasurer; Darlene Palange, Secretary; and Anne Jerome, Historian; were chosen to represent and serve us. At our first executive board meeting we discussed class dues and fund raising activities that would alleviate the cost of graduation and other Senior Activities. During the year a Christmas card delivery service was conducted as well as several album raffles and cake sales. The P.M. Session's Student Council elected Chris Snow, President; Donna Me Cormack, Vice-President; Susy Sor-villo. Treasurer; and Lynn Onofrio, Secretary. It was their task to voice student opinions regarding school policy. They waged a losing battle for a smoking break, but struck a major accomplishment by replacing the out-moded detention system with a demerit and misconduct system. In sports that year the Football Team closed its season with a 5-4 won-lost record, while the Basketball Team finished with a 12-7 record. The Swim Team went 9-6, Track 2-10, and Baseball 8-7. The Sophomore athletes that year looked to the up and coming years and their own turn at glory. On April 14th the Freshman and Sophomore classes joined forces to present Friends , a dance with music provided by New England Jam. It was an enjoyable evening and it gave our class a fair profit of $48.00. Also during April the Drama Club presented a lively musical production of The Wizard of Oz , Cheerleaders and Majorettes were chosen in the spring. They were to initiate spirit and enthusiasm in sports during the coming year. Elections for Junior Class officers that spring, saw Vice-President Mike Lawlor as our only new replacement. A year of experience and education came to a close and the Class of 1974 left East Haven that June in anticipation of things to come in our Junior year. JUNIOR YEAR 1972-1973 Our Junior year began an entirely new routine for us. We joined the Seniors as part of the morning session. Being upperclassmen made us feel a little special but the Seniors were quick to put us in our place. Our new advisors, Mr. Cohen, Miss Hawkes and Mr. Roddy would remain with us the next two years. We competed against the Seniors in the Magazine Drive and though we won in total sales we lost by a few cents per student. Nevertheless, the Magazine Drive was a success and added $1000.00 to our treasury. Shortly afterward, we sponsored a candy sale. Who could ever forget all those delicious bars of World s Finest Chocolate ? Cake sales and album raffles were held occasionally and in the spring we sold Rex Cleaner. Our Junior dance was held in February and might have been more successful if it hadn't coincided with a basketball game. Team records in sports that year were: Football, with a won-lost-tie record: 6-3-1, Cross Country: 0-10, Basketball: 13-8, Swimming: 7-8, Track: 3-10, and Baseball: 6-11. The Junior's, with a year's experience and maturity behind them were a great asset to the sports world. However, the most important sports news of all was the return of Girl's Athletics to East Haven. The new teams competed on a probation basis to gain entry into the Housatonic League. The first team was Basketball, followed by Volleyball and a very successful Softball team which placed second in the Housy. The highlight of our Junior year was the Prom, the theme being Stairway to Heaven”. This took place on Friday evening, April twenty-seventh at the West Haven Knights of Columbus. Music was provided by Portraits in Sound . The After-Prom was held at the East Haven Knights of Columbus, sponsored by the Rotary Club. It was an evening that we will remember for a long time. That spring, the Drama Club, rapidly developing notoriety for its fine plays, presented Once Upon a Mattress . The Junior members, now veterans of the stage, excelled. Many awards recognizing students for academic and personal achievements were presented. Among them, Nutmeg Boy's State, Girl's State, the Harvard Book Award, Honor Society Inductions and Fire Prevention Awards. The new replacements to our class officers were Kathy Goodwin, Ass t Treasurer, and Gail Davies, Secretary. The Pioneer Staff was chosen to compile facts and photos for the 126 HISTORY greatest momenta of our high school days. All Teams and squads also elected captains for the next year. Our Junior year passed quickly. Driver's Education, class rings, the Prom, and teachers shouting to be heard above drills and bulldozers are all memories. The biggest event came in January though when President Nixon announced the end of the Viet Nam war. I'm sure we ll all remember feelings of joy and relief upon hearing that good news. The time was slipping by and slowly the realization was creeping into our minds that our high school days would soon be gone. The time to plan our future was upon us. SENIOR YEAR 1973-1974 Our Senior year, a time for fun and a time of serious decision making was finally here. The first half of the year found most students preoccupied with postgraduation plans. Many new and important things were happening at East Haven High School that year. The new wing was completed, the older ones renovated, and a new sports complex was finished at the Junior High School. The complex included an ice-skating rink, tennis courts, and the Frank Crisafi Football Field. The high school was furnished with new science and business equipment along with a highly advanced Multi-Media Center. Classrooms painted in florescent tones helped keep many students awake during class. The school day that year was the most variable ever. By November our day was rearranged to include a lunch program. In January, school opening was delayed until 8:30 a.m. to help cope with Daylight Savings Time, introduced as a result of the energy crisis. The four classes combined totaled 2,000 students. A new curriculum was added to suit a wider range of interest. The Senior Lounge was an asset as it gave the Seniors a place of their own . Another privilege was the smoking break which ended the long battle between students and faculty. In September the Class officers met with Mr. Cestari, who announced that fund-raising would be limited to activities within the school, which meant the end of the Magazine Drive. Dues were raised $10.00 yearly to make up for the loss. A cake sale, several concert raffles and the Senior-sponsored Coast Guard Concert all brought fair profits to the class of '74. A Festival of Films on March thirteenth and fourteenth drew a large crowd. But the biggest event of all, excepting the Prom, was the Senior dance or The Hop as it was called. Everyone dressed in their 50's attire that school day and on that evening, December seventh, we were all in the mood for music and contests with Dick Boothe and his Oldies Review . The Hop was unanimously the best dance in many years and it gave the treasury over four hundred dollars. In sports that year Seniors were taking full advantage of the new facilities. They directed the Football Team to a 6-4 won-lost mark. Cross Country: 2-8, Basketball: 8-10, Swim Team: 8-6-1, and the new Hockey Team finished 14-4-1. The golf, track, baseball, and tennis teams were all preparing for their spring season. Meanwhile, girl's sports were expanding that year and so was enthusiasm for it. Field Hockey finished 1-8-2 in their first varsity season, and Volleyball finished 2-11. The Basketball Team was very successful, finishing with a 10-6 won-lost record and competing in the CIAC Tournament. The Softball, Track, and Tennis Teams all looked forward to a great spring season. At a fast pace women were gaining their long deserved equality in the Athletic Department of East Haven. On January 31, several students and teachers presented an assembly. Filled with music from the 50 s and early 60 s, it was one of the best assemblies ever. After many months of hard work and preparation our Senior Prom took place. The Prom entitled Time in a Bottle was held on June seventh at Restland Farms. Richard Neal's Orchestra provided the music. As there was no After-Prom that year our Senior Prom lasted from 7:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Senior Class Picnic was held on Saturday, June 15th, at the Pinecrest Country Club. Those attending enjoyed a day filled with good food, music and activity. At the Senior Luncheon the Class of '74 received their yearbooks and exchanged good-byes with the students and teachers they had grown so close to. The final assembly of the Class of 74 was of course, graduation. The exercises were held at the Frank Crisafi Field. Speeches delivered by Class President, Toni Cocchiaro and Valedictorian, Elizabeth DeMayo. summed up our joys and achievements at East Haven High School. Our days at East Haven High had drawn to a close. Our high school years gone now forever. As we left, each of us bid East Haven High our own personal farewell and headed on in whatever direction we had chosen for our lives, holding within our hearts memories that would last forever. 127 129 SENIOR CLASS DIRECTORY Susan Adams 74 Vista Drive. Judy Karbowski 159 IN appreciation A successful yearbook is the result of the dedication, hard work, and cooperation of many people. We would like to acknowledge the people who aided us in making this book what it is. We would first like to thank our principal, Mr. Arnold Cestari, the administration and the entire faculty for their understanding and cooperation. Our staff did a fantastic job. Their long hours of effort and intense determination are reflected throughout the book. We are deeply indebted to our photographers Mr. Larry McBrearty and Mr. Joseph Cohen who went out of their way to ensure us of great pictures. Final thanks must be given to our advisor, Mr. Frank Meoli, who has helped us in every way. He gave not only of his time but also of himself. His friendship will always be remembered. Thanks to all.
