ji-S nigh is grandeur to our dust, r l io near is God to man, when duty whispers low, Thou must, theycmth-replies, I can.” DEDICATION For your lasting patience and guidance during the past three years at East Haven High School, we, the Class of 1968, dedicate this Pioneer to you Mrs. Teresa Vitale, Mr. John Young, and Mr. Vincent DiStasio. We would like to express our sincere appreciation for your hard work and able assistance, as you aided us in our many endeavors and helped to make these past years three of the most memorable of our lives. 2 We would like to thank you, MR. JOHN YOUNG, for your continued support and help with our many financial matters, particularly during the candy sale and the Magazine Drive, and for your constant reminders to pay our class dues, all so important to the success of our class. We would like to thank you, MRS. TERESA VITALE, for your needed assistance and many ideas which contributed greatly to our dances and the success of our Junior Prom. We will never forget the time and effort you gave to these affairs and will always be grateful for it. We would like to thank you, MR. VINCENT DiSTASIO, for the warmth and understanding you showed your students, and for always being ready to help us with our many problems. There was never a time when you were not there to encourage us when we were down, and to brighten our spirits with a cheerful solution. 3 We are but what you make us. A FACULTY MR. FOOTBALL The East Haven Yellowjackets posted a 6-2-1 overall record in 1967, starting the season with an impressive second-half comeback win over non-league Hamden and continuing their winning streak with wins over Cheshire and Shelton. The Easties wrere dealt their first loss by a score of 7 to 6 in a hard fought game against up and coming rival Derby. Coming back strongly after the defeat, the Yellowjackets rallied to beat Amity, Lyman Hall, and North Haven. The Easties then fell victim to Seymour and finished the season in a scoreless tie with arch-rival Branford on a rain soaked field in the traditional Thanksgiving Day Game. Leading the squad, headcoached by Frank Crisafi, were tricaptains Chuck Sizemore, Ed Sagnella, and Wayne Wrzosek. Using the balanced run-pass offense that Coach Crisafi is noted for, the team was able to amass 206 points, while only 98 points were scored by opponents against the well-known Easties' Monster Defense. Although the starting lineup was comprised mainly of seniors, the losses to both the line and the backfield through graduation will be filled by several varsity lettered juniors and Sophomores, who gained experience by playing considerably during the season. East Haven was honored to have three players placed on the All-Housatonic League Team. They were John Gambardella, Tom Tyndall, and Pat Frisketti. The Yellowjackets broke even in the season’s won-lost column with an overall record of 10-10. East Haven led the Housatonic League for most of the season; and the final game with Branford, a 68-63 loss, was the deciding game in what had been an enjoyable and exciting season. The senior studded Eastie lineup was graced with the steady scoring efforts of Jim Stonick, Frank McDonald, Jim Pascarclla, and Joe DePino; and added talents of varsity seniors Bob Carney, Vin Carrano, Kevin Sheehan, and Chuck Sizemore rounded out a versatile team. Season standout Jim Stonick paced the Easties with 326 points and ranked sixth in the Housy scoring race. The constantly moving Eastie team was at a distinct height disadvantage. This pattern should change next year with a taller group of underclassmen who paced the Junior varsity team with a highly successful record of 19 wins and 1 loss. It fell short of their 8-7 hopes, but losses were due to sickness and close touch-outs in certain events. Tri-captains Pat Burke, Steve Johns, and Mike Pollio made the backbone of the varsity with valuable service rendered by seniors John McLoughlin, Paul Lucas, Jay Mason; and juniors Bill Planinshek, Paul Durkin, and Amie Helland. Promising definite value to next year's team are sophomores Bob Civitello, Richie Saville, Ray Monaco, John Badiali, and Ron Whitney. The most improved and outstanding swimmer was tricaptain Steve Johns, who not only broke the original times for the 100 yd. BASEBALL This season’s senior laden East Haven High School Baseball team is one that because of experience and capability ranked as a top contender for the Housatonic League Championship. Tri-Captained by Wayne Wrzosck, Kevin Sheehan, and Charles Sizemore, who were all selected to the A11-Housatonic League Team as juniors, and coached by Mr. Jerry Lembo and Mr. John Villano, a new addition to the coaching staff, faced a tough Housy League schedule. They are hoping for a post season berth in the C.I.A.C. While they did lose all three of the games on their schedule, it was a season of learning and experience for all the girls. When I get to be a Senior CLASS HISTORY SOPHOMORE YEAR Filled with anxiety and anticipation, we entered East Haven High School in September of 1965. Our fear was somewhat lessened by the presence of our advisers: Mrs. Teresa Vitale, Mr. Vincent DiStasio, and Mr. John Young. One of our first acts as Little Shots was to elect our class officers: President, Andrew Amendola; Vice-President, Patricia O’Brien; Secretary, Margo Marini; Treasurer, Cathy Lee; Assistant Treasurer, Lauretta Ianotti; and Historian, Patricia Zambrano. The pep-rally, which started the 1965 football season, both lifted our spirits and readied the student body for the upcoming games. As sophomores we proudly represented our class by placing five members on the first string. They were Charles Sizemore, John Gambardel-la, Wayne Wrzosek, Thomas Tyndall, and Edward Sagnella. They were a great asset to the team and we ended the season victoriously by winning the Housatonic League title with an 8-1 overall record. Our inexperience as magazine salesmen hindered greatly our bid for first place in the annual magazine drive. Our song Help” was very appropriate since that is what we needed desperately. We came in last place behind the seniors and juniors and put on a successful Jamboree in December. The basketball season began, and our class was well represented by varsity players James Stonick, Joseph DePino, and Frank McDonald. Supporting the varsity team as reserves or substitutes were Charles Sizemore, Robert Carney, James Pascarella, Kevin Sheehan, and Vincent Carrano. The Easties ended the season with a 10-10 overall record and a 9-7 league record. This gave them third place in the Housatonic League. A majority of those swimmers who turned out for the mermen’s roster were sophomores. They swam in the New Haven District League competition and ended their season with a disappointing 1-11 record, but with promise for future success. During our sophomore year the Drama Club presented the play Good News.” Two members of our class, Francis Barron and Patrick Reynolds, portrayed characters in the play. The cast was supported by stagemanagers Gail Backman and Cathy Lee and the stage crew consisting of sophomores Donna Snow, Gail Weed, Gar ' Dinnean, and David Richards. In March the baseball team started practice for the 1966 season. Five sophomores earned starting positions on the team. They were Wayne Wrzosek, Charles Sizemore, Thomas Tyndall, Kevin Sheehan, and John Gambar-della. The team ended the season with a record of 9-9 and third place in the Housatonic League standings. The golf team sported a commendable record. Sophomores Joseph DePino, Frank McDonald, and Frank Chamberlain added their talents on the golf course to those of the upperclassmen. In May we held our sophomore dance entitled Somewhere.” The music for this occasion was provided by the Casuals. It was both a social and financial success as it launched us into the social life of high school and added funds to our treasury. The year passed quickly, and we realized how unnecessary our fears had been. We were glad, and maybe just a little sad, to leave the title Little Shots” behind. As prospective juniors we could now look forward with confidence to the many experiences which the up-coming year would hold. JUNIOR YEAR In September of 1966, we were led into junior life by Andrew Amendola, President; Charles Sizemore, Vice-President; Gail Back-man, Secretary; Donna Snow, Treasurer; and Lynn Kotowski, Historian. The class of ’68 continued to show great aptitude for sports. Charles Sizemore, Thomas Tyndall, John Gambardella, Edward Sagnella, Wayne Wrzosek, Pasquale Frisketti, James Stonick, and James Pascarella represented our class by gaining starting berths on the football team. The season was an overall success and the team’s 7-1-1 record gained them a tie with Derby for the Housatonic League title. Wayne Wrzosek was honored by being placed on the All-Housatonic League team and also by receiving the Best Lineman of the Year Award. Charles Sizemore was awarded the Best Back of the Branford Game Trophy. To celebrate the closing of the football season, the Varsity Ball was staged in November. It was the only semi-formal dance of the year and was sponsored by the Varsity Club. Jean Pesce, Donna Snow, Ellen Mantovani, and Mary McCarthy were the junior cheerleaders who cheered the team on to victory. Juniors Gayle More, Geralynne Breymyer, and Susan Weir were members of the majorette squad. One of the first fund raising events of our junior year was the Magazine Drive. When it arrived, we were ready with Reachout” as our theme song, but tradition held out, and we 120 came in second place. We averaged $10.72 per student and were led by Mr. Malonis’ homeroom 302, which sold a total of $402.85 worth of subscriptions. Janice Barthelson was our top salesman, and as a class we brought in a total of $3,611.68. Our second fund raising event was our candy sale. We realized a profit of $900. The Junior Class participated in the annual Senior Slave Dance held on October 27. Patricia O’Brien and Thomas Tyndall were chosen to represent the Junior Class. This was followed on November 10, by our Junior Dance. The Bram Rigg Set provided the music for this highly successful event. During the ’66 basketball season, our team was supported by juniors James Stonick, Joseph DePino, Frank McDonald, Kevin Sheehan, Robert Carney, James Pascarella, Vincent Car-rano, and Charles Sizemore. By placing a 14-5 overall record, the Easties qualified for the Class A CIAC tournament. An 11-4 league record put them in third place in the Housatonic League. James Stonick was voted the Most Valuable Player of the Year. The 1966-67 East Haven High School swimming team had a season’s record of 4-8. The junior members of the swimming team were Stephen Johns, Patrick Burke, Michael Pollio, Jay Mason, John McLoughlin, Albert Abate, and Frederick Shulick. We shined not only athletically and socially, but also academically. Our academic achievements were cited at the twenty-eighth annual induction of the Athena Chapter of the National Honor Society, which was held in March. The following thirteen juniors were inducted into the National Honor Society: Andrew Amendola, Gail Backman, Janice Barthelson, Stephen Johns, Donald Kosack, Lynn Kotowski, Bridget Leary, John Looney, Valy Menkin, Jean Pesce, Charles Sizemore, James White, and Robert Zambrano. Lauretta Ianotti, Susan Tro-fatter, and Sally White won the Fire Prevention Essay Contest. Jean Pesce and Charles Sizemore were presented with the Women Deans and Counselors’ Award and the Harvard Book Award respectively. The greatest social event of our junior year, the Junior Prom, was held April 28, at the Sea Cliff Inn. The prom committee worked diligently with co-chairmen Nancy Sgro and William Day to make the event both a social and finanacial success. The prom was entitled Camelot” and was followed by an After-Prom at the East Haven Knights of Columbus. Charles Sizemore and Patricia O’Brien were chosen king and queen. Toward the end of the year, two important elections were held. The first was the election of Student Council officers for the coming year. Those elected were President, Thomas Abbe-nante; Vice-President, Lynn Kotowski; Secretary, Beverly Borelli; and Treasurer, Cathy Lee. The second election was that of the Pioneer staff. Gail Backman was elected editor-in-chief. The 1967 baseball team was engaged in a particularly good season. They ended the season with a record of 12-6 and with a league record of 11-5 which earned them second place in the Housatonic League. The roster consisted of many fine juniors. They were Kevin Sheehan, Wayne Wrzosek, Thomas Tyndall, Charles Sizemore, John Lana, John Gambardella, and Michael Pollio. Three juniors — Wayne Wrzosek, Kevin Sheehan, and Charles Sizemore — were chosen for the All-Housatonic League team. In June, Laurel Girls’ State and Nutmeg Boys' State were held at the University of Connecticut. The girls who represented East Haven High School were Jean Pesce and Janice Barthelson. The following seven boys attended Boys’ State: Thomas Tyndall, Valy Menkin, Andrew Amendola, Stephen Johns, Wayne Wrzosek, Michael Pollio, and Charles Sizemore. And so we left East Haven High School once more, and in so leaving, left behind the junior class of ’68. We were now seniors. SENIOR YEAR In September of 1967, we entered East Haven High School as seniors. Andrew Amendola again headed the slate; Martin Melillo was Vice-President; Christine Proto was Secretary; Patricia Fries was Historian; and Donna Snow and Lauretta Ianotti returned again as Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer respectively. Winning the Magazine Drive was the first big financial endeavor of our senior year. We followed tradition by keeping the sophomores and juniors “Under Our Thumbs.” We sold a total of $3,983-75 worth of magazine subscriptions. Senior Jean Pesce was the chairman of the drive, which was led by Annette Cappiello, who was the school’s top salesman. Many seniors were among those salesmen who sold at least $80 worth of magazine subscriptions and were rewarded with a trip to New York City. The 1967 football team posted a 6-2-1 overall record, which entitled them to third place in the Housatonic League standings. Leading the squad were tri-captains Wayne Wrzosek, Edward Sagnella, and Charles Sizemore. Other seniors who played vital roles in the year’s games were Thomas Tyndall, Pasquale Frisket-ti, John Gambardella, James Stonick, James Pascarella, Robert Casale, and Francis Barron. The Yellowjackets were honored by having 121 three players placed on the All-Housatonic League team. They were John Gambardella, Thomas Tyndall, and Pasquale Frisketti. Also Edward Sagnella was awarded the Savitt Sportsmanship Award. Senior girls also proved their ability in the field of sports. Captain Jean Pesce led senior cheerleaders Donna Snow, Ellen Mantavani, and Patricia Perrone in their support of our teams. The majorette squad was led by captain Geralynne Breymayer and drum majorette Gayle More. The only other senior member of the squad was Lois Jean Parisi. The annual Senior Slave Dance was held in October, and it was extremely successful. The senior slaves were Joan East and Richard Miranda. The mystery slave, senior John Gambardella brought in $123-68, an amount which has never before been paid for any slave. The total amount collected from auctioning the slaves was $198.68. The Takin' Five provided the music for the dance. Dances were not the only source of income for the senior class. The profits from our many cake sales also supplemented the treasury. The Drama Club presented a play which was entitled Christmas for the Duchess.” The senior members of the cast were Cathy DiSante. Linda Texeira, Francis Barron, and Salvatore Palmieri. The 1967-68 basketball team ended its season with a record of 10-10. The team, which finished second in the Housatonic League title race, was captained by James Stonick and Joseph DePino. The senior studded Eastie lineup consisted of the following players: Frank McDonald, Robert Carney, Kevin Sheehan, James Pascarella, Vincent Carrano, and Charles Sizemore. Center Robert Carney received the Savitt Sportsmanship Award. The Easties’ swimming team ended a successful season with a better than average 5-10 record. Tri-captains Patrick Burke, Stephen Johns, and Michael Pollio made up the backbone of the varsity squad. Valuable service was also rendered by seniors John McLoughlin, Jay Mason, Paul Lucas, and James Carbone. The National Honor Society, under the leadership of President, Robert Zambrano; Vice-President, Donald Kosack; Secretary, Janice Barthelson; Treasurer, Lynn Kotowski; Historian, Valy Menkin; and Sergeant-at-Arms, Stephen Johns, edited a literary magazine, Reflections, which included works by students of all classes and courses. The Society also sponsored the twenty-ninth annual induction of the Athena Chapter of the National Honor Society. The 1968 baseball team was tri-captained by Wayne Wrzosek, Kevin Sheehan, and Charles Sizemore. Despite the fact that they faced a tough Housatonic League schedule, they had a successful season due to the efforts of seniors John Gambardella, John Lana, Michael Pollio, and James Pascarella. After a year's absence from the slate of athletics, the golf team was reinstituted. It was comprised solely of seniors: Joseph DePino, Frank McDonald, Frank Chamberlain, Thomas Tyndall, and Robert Zambrano. New additions to the interscholastic athletic program were a boys’ track team and a girls’ basketball team. These two teams added greater scope to the East Haven High School athletic department. A thoroughly new and remodeled gymnasium also helped to accomplish this. Many of our seniors received special recognition as outstanding students. Jean Pesce was chosen as DAR girl; Peter Cianeili marched with the McDonald All-American Band in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York; and Valy Menkin received the National Merit Scholarship Letter of Commendation. Five seniors also won prizes in the annual Fire Prevention Essay and Poster Contest. The winners of the essay contest were Gail Weed, first place; Louis Pasquariello, second place; and Linda Buist, third place. Bohdan Sowa and Michael Keller placed first and third respectively in the poster contest. Charles Sizemore won first place in the Crime Prevention Essay Contest. Also Corliss Kilburn was chosen Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow, and Thomas Ab-benate placed first in the American Legion Oratorical Contest. The night we had all been waiting for, May 24, arrived. It was the night of our Senior Prom. It had been carefully planned by the prom committee under the direction of co-chairmen Lynn Welter and Thomas Tyndall. After a glamourous evening of dancing at the Park Plaza Hotel, we changed into informal wear and attended the After-Prom which was held at the East Haven Knights of Columbus Hall. There we danced to the sounds of the Chosen Few. The year went by quickly, but there it was time for our Senior Awards Assembly where all our athletes were honored for their athletic achievements, and all those students who excelled academically were also honored. That assembly was followed soon afterward by the Senior Assembly and the Senior Class Luncheon, where our ’68 Pioneer was distributed. All too soon, the night of graduation arrived. As we held our diplomas in our hands, we suddenly felt older and wiser. With shining eyes, we said good-bye to East Haven High School and hopefully greeted a new world. IN MEMORIAM MICHAEL NAUGHTON December 16, 1949 March 7, 1968 O Lord, support us all day long, until the shadows lengthen and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then in Thy mercy grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last. 123 ti imen fa EDAL 125 INDUSTRIES Phone: 488-6421 Compliments of DEPALMA'S APPIZZA PLAZA CARPET SHOP, INC. of BRANFORD 635 West Main Stret Branford, Connecticut (Opposite Howard Johnson) Phone 469-1988 Prop.
