THE ROAD NOT TAKEN - Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one ds far as I could ' I To where it bents in the under growth r Then took the other, as fust as fair, i And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same. And both that morning equally lay ; In leaves no step had tjodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, i J I doubted if I should ever come hack. ' I, shall telling this with a sigh ’■ Somewhere ages and ages hena: MMhKbI Tub roads diverged ift a' wbodyanil — I took thensne less traveled by. And that has made all the difference. ■ Robert Frost ■ ■«£ ' ' „ ■ ... . DEDICATION KATHERINE WALSH As seventh and eighth graders, the Class of 1967 first met Mrs. Walsh at the junior high school. There she became interested in us and our problems. When we moved along the road to the high school, we had the good fortune of having Mrs. Walsh accompany us as our high school Guidance Co-ordinator. In high school the road became rougher. As we altered our former objectives and ideals, Mrs. Walsh was on hand to guide and advise us, always with warm encouragement. We, the Class of 1967, are both proud and happy to dedicate this Pioneer to Mrs. Katherine Walsh. Her friendship and warmth will be cherished forever. IN APPRECIATION We, the Class of 1967, would like to express our sincere appreciation to the entire faculty for helping us along the road to graduation. We especially wish to extend our gratitude to our advisors for unselfishly devoting their patience, time, and guidance to us during our three year stay at East Haven High. 3 Happy-my ytudies,'when by these approved! Happier their author when by these beloved! From these the world will judge of men and books ... Though many obstacles could be seen ahead, the sophomore class of East Haven High School commenced its journey more confidently under the direction of its class advisors Mrs. Lorraine Swatt and Mr. Stephen Narracci. Early in the year, the spirit of the football season descended upon us. The only sophomore starter, Michael Zito as outside linebacker and halfback brought honor to the sophomore class through his exceptional playing ability. That year East Haven compiled a 6-3 record, sharing second place with Branford. Gradually asserting our position, the sophomore class proudly participated in the annual Senior Slave dance held in October. Janet Scalia and DuBreuil Grenon received the honor of being chosen sophomore slaves. In the November Fire Prevention Essay Contest Sophomores Suzy Bianchi, Antoinette Santomasso and Sandra Welter were awarded first, second and third prizes respectively. Although inexperienced in magazine salesmanship, the sophomores eagerly accepted Mr. “Curly” Davis’ challenge to become the victors of the magazine drive in December. To the melody of “I’m on the Outside Looking In,” the sophomores fought spiritedly but were unable to overcome the seniors in first place. The class total amounted to $4,-147.90 averaging $10.92 per person. Early in December the Class of ’67 was host to all $20 salesmen at a very successful Magazine Drive Jamboree. During that same month the election of class officers was held and our sophomore class continued to step more confidently. Elected to lead the class were: President, Michael Zito; Vice-President, Sandra Welter; Secretary, Karen Mayer; Treasurer, Mary Byrne; Historian, Antoinette Santomasso. Our interests now turned to the sport that provided us with many enjoyable winter nights. Looking forward to a successful season East Haven’s basketball team opened their season in December. Sophomores John Albis, Michael Zito, Ralph Proto, Martin Schwartz, Chuck DiFabbio and Ron Frangi were among candidates for the starting five. That year East Haven finished fourth in the Housatonic league. Directed by coach Mr. Anastasio the East Haven High swimming team was definitely strengthened by its sophomore team members William Burns, David Chelstowski, Michael Johnson, William Leonard, James McKay and Urmas Volke. Winning the Housatonic League championship highlighted our team’s season. After careful planning and enthusiastic work “Sophomore Shindig” was staged by the Class of 67 in March. Supported by a large number of the student body and enjoyed by all who attended, the dance proved highly successful. The Sophomores could now walk with even more pride for they had shown to the upperclassmen that the Class of 1967 was one of much promise. Also during the month of March, the annual Volleyball Tournament captured the interest of many Sophomores who sought to “Bring Home the Bacon.” Crescenti’s Sketches, Homeroom 103, were Sophomore victors. With much delight and appreciation the entire student body and faculty enjoyed a one act play entitled “Antic Spring,” presented by the Drama Club in April. The Class of 1967 gained the limelight as Suzy Bianchi as Ginger and Howard Nitchkie as Sam played major roles in the presentation. 72 Cheerleading tryouts in May, an important event of the'year, added Sophomores Sharon Brockway, Betty Cross, Carol Moccia and Sandra Welter to the Varsity Squad in addition to Beverly Ellis, Sharon Sa-ville and Patricia Tryanow to the Junior Varsity Squad led by Captain Janet Scalia. Also chosen to take part in football entertainment for the following year were Majorettes Nancy Boughton, Sharon Linsley, Sharon Molitiemo, Susan Myers, Patricia Previti and Antoinette Santo-masso. The selection of Robin Ayr as Assistant Manager of the Comet that same month also signified the Class of ’67’s increasing importance in East Haven High. Thus the Sophomore Class of 1967 had begun its journey on a most difficult yet extremely rewarding road of life. We had entered East Haven hesitantly but eager to establish a unified and respected class. Throughout the year we, as Sophomores, achieved importance in all of East Haven’s academic, extra curricular and social phases of school life. At the final stage of our Sophomore Year, the road had become easier and the new horizons of our Junior Year were awaited with anticipation. 1965-1966 A merry road, a mazy road, in such as we did tread. Prepared to proceed farther along the road to graduation, the Class of 1967 confidently began their Junior year. Our class excitedly waited for the arrival of Curly and the Magazine Drive. The Juniors placed second with Kathy Torello as our high salesman. The Junior eighty dollar salesmen who traveled to Radio City were: Kathy Torello, Frieda D’Onofrio, Jerry Gallicchio, Tom DeMartino, Linda Rakich, Irene Roczynski, and Jim Simeone. Now stepping more assuredly along the various roads of the Junior year, the Class of 1967 was ready to stage the first social event of then-year, Fall Festival. The dance was held from eight to eleven P.M. The gym was decorated with colored leaves, trees, and decorations borrowed from Malley’s. Music was provided by the Sultans from nine to eleven. The committee was headed by Sandy Welter and Robin Ayr. The publicity and decoration subcommittees worked hard to make the evening a success. With the success of the Easties as the Housy champs behind us, the Juniors eagerly forged ahead into new areas. From November 24 till December 16, a candy sale to raise money for our class was held. The top salesmen, Sharon Brockway and Sharon Molitiemo, were awarded twenty-five dollars each. Robin Ayr picked nine names from a basket containing the names of all those who had sold a box of candy or more. The ten-dollar winners were: Bill Blakeslee, Judy Yankowski, Chris Cook, Lynn Seipold, Mary Esposito, Terry Esposito, and Lenore Di-Chello. Rosemary DeSanto received a five dollar prize. The Class of 1967 continued to achieve recognition in E.H.H.S.’s academic life. The Fire Prevention Essay winners, Patty Anastasio, Mike Rosen, and Eileen Schulick, represented the Juniors. Priscilla Metzler placed third in the Voice of Democracy Contest. On Wednesday, February 9, 1966, the twenty-seventh annual induction into the Athena Chapter of the National Honor Society was held in the school auditorium. The inducted Juniors were: Pat Anastasio, Andy Apicella, Suzy Bianchi, Alberta Conte, Douglas Hazall, Jerry Heffernan, Beverly Inkster, James McKay, Mike Rosen, Antoinette Santomasso, Dale Thackeray and Sandy Welter. Spring arrived, and the travelers of the grassy road turned once again to athletics. Cheerleading tryouts were held on April 14, 1966 in the 73 gym. The girls were judged on jump, split, cartwheel, poise, appearance, smile, projection, and enthusiasm. The judges were Miss Hardy, Mrs. Schmidt, and Mrs. Bormann. Juniors chosen for the varsity squad were: Carol Moccia, Pat Tryanow, Sharon Saville, Lynn Daddio, Sandy Welter, and Marilyn Brunelle. Majorette tryouts were held in May. Members were selected on the basis of ability, poise, appearance, and enthusiasm. Sharon Molitiemo was made captain with Antoinette Santomasso and Sharon Linsley as co-captains. Other Junior members chosen were: Joan Mauro, Jo-Ann Messing, Priscilla Metzler, Diane Saiano, and Judy Yankowski. The long-awaited, major social event of the Junior year, Stardust, the Junior Prom, was held on April 29. The prom committee was headed by co-chairmen, Lynn Siepold and John Albis. Music was provided by Frank D’Amato and his Orchestra for the entire three hours of the evening. Pictures were taken before and during the prom. As the couples walked through the entrance, they received their favors, a basket of flowers, and viewed the lovely centerpiece and the galactic wall murals. Excitement grew as eleven approached, time for coronation of King and Queen. Jim Simeone and Michele Tomasso crowned King Sal Marottoli and Queen Karen Mayer. Their attendants were: Angel De-Leito and Bruce Shaw, Lynn Seipold and Mike Zito, and Pam Jackson and Butch Proto. The Junior Jambor Mix of 66 was held at the East Haven Knights of Columbus. A buffet style dinner was catered by the East Haven Rotary Club. The Casuals provided the music and the McGowan Brothers entertained. A truly successful end enjoyable evening came to a close at three A.M. Students selected to spend a week at UConn were Alberta Conte and Sandy Welter, Laurel Girls’ State representatives, and John Albis, Andy Apicella, Frank Avitabile, Doug Hazall, Jerry Heffeman, Jim McKay and Mike Rosen, Nutmeg Boys’ State Representatives. This program was sponsored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary. On May 24,1966, in the gym of E.H.H.S., Senior class elections were held. Everyone realized the importance of electing competent officers for our Senior year. Each candidate gave a speech stating his qualifications. Our Senior class leaders are: Mike Zito, President; Jerry Hef-fernan, vice-president; Antoinette Santomasso, secretary; John Stacey, treasurer; Mary Jane Byrne, assistant treasurer; and Lorraine Colburn, historian. Our Junior year came to an end with a major portion of our travels over. We looked forward to our Senior year and the completion of our journey through our high school years. 1966-1967 What was once hut a path has become a high road. The road goes on, but we have come to a parting of our ways; each to his own private world. The high school life which we have lived together will always be remembered. September 1967, Seniors! Every face beamed with pride as we entered school for our final year. We felt much older and wiser, and Sophomores were “babes in the woods.’’ The inevitable teasing, a Senior prerogative began; tickets were sold to rallies and passes distributed for the elevator. Soon, however, we settled down to serious work and planning for college. The Senior Class was led by Michael Zito, President; Gerald Heffeman, Vice-President; Antoinette Santomasso, Secretary; John Stacey, Treasurer; Mary Byrne, Assistant Treasurer; and Lorraine Colburn, Historian. Winning the Magazine Drive was the next big endeavor, and the Class of ’67 took it calmly in its stride. The Seniors were able to “Wipe Out” the underclassmen and gain a goodly sum of money for their treasury. Class sales totaled $5,785.85 with an average per person of $17.88. As usual the Sophomores staged the Jamboree. The Senior Slave Dance proved one of the biggest successes of the Senior Year. Senior Slaves Pam Jackson, Ron Frangi and Anthony Sca-zino were auctioned off to the highest bidders. The annual cake sales followed throughout the year to lessen our financial worries even more. The football and basketball seasons greeting East Haven were exciting ones. The football team, led by Captain Mike Zito, tied for the Housatonic League Title with our arch rival Branford. The basketball team played under the leadership of Ralph Proto. Easties’ mermen swam to victory in a promising season led by Mike Johnson. Throughout the entire sports season, the Cheerleaders, led by Patty Tryanow and with Senior members Sandy Welter, Marilyn Brunelle, Carol Moccia, Lynn Daddio and Sharon Saville helped to promote school spirit and lend an encouraging atmosphere at all athletic events. Majorettes twirled under the leadership of Captain Sharon Molitierno and Co-Captains Antoinette Santomasso and Sharon Lin-sey. To celebrate the closing of the football, the Varsity Ball was staged in November. The Royal Court included Michael Zito and Carol Moccia, king and queen, attended by Sandy Welter, Lynn Daddio, Tom Healy and Bill Ude. The Student Council, headed by President Mike Muro, handled the organization and functioning of the student government. The Christmas Party for retarded children, book sales, Christmas decorating contests, and a Debating Assembly were among the various activities sponsored by the council. As the year progressed, various individuals gained prominence in the school and community. Sandra Welter was named D.A.R. Girl, Patricia Anastasio won the American Legion Oratorical and Voice of Democracy Contests, James McKay received a National Merit Scholarship Letter of Commendation, Suzy Bianchi was chosen Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow and Antoinette Santomasso won the Peace Essay Contest. Honor Society Inductions were held in March and many Seniors were inducted. Leading the organization were Suzy Bianchi, President; Michael Rosen, Vice-President; Sandra Welter, Secretary; Alberta Conte, Treasurer; Andrew Apicella, Sergeant-at-Arms; and Antoinette Santomasso, Historian. Finally, the last few weeks of the school year came into view. Some of the greatest memories of all were kindled in our hearts; the Awards Assembly and Senior Luncheon, where the ’67 Pioneer was distributed. Final exams were a sobering experience, but they were quickly forgotten as the beauty and joy of the Senior Prom arrived on a June night that provided memories to surpass all others. Graduation soon arrived. The Class of 1967 had traveled a most challenging yet joyful journey and new horizons were before us. Many of us had chosen the roads we were to follow and all of us prepared ourselves to face separate paths. As we marched out onto the field in procession, with the faces of friends and families proudly beaming; we each took our private peeks back upon four years of work and fun. Each of us probably remembered something different from everyone else, but we were all united in our final success and in our eternal memories of East Haven High. 75 FIRST ROW LEFT TO RIGHT: Robert Aduzzo, Robert Torello, Robert Muro, Stephen Johns, Robert LucibeDo, David Richards, John Looney, Thomas Abbenante, Robert Gallagher, John Santomasso, Jerry Foss, Andrew Apicella, Billy Day. FOOTBALL 1966 was an outstanding year for the East Haven High School Yellowjackets. Throughout the season the Easties rolled over stiff competition, proving their worth, losing only to Cheshire and tying with archrival Branford in the traditional Thanksgiving Day Game. Under the experienced know-how of Coach Crisafi, Seniors Tom Healy, Anthony Scasino, Ron DeLucia, Mike Muro, Bob Houlberg, Bill Ude, Ron Frangi, Dave Parillo, Captain Mike Zito, a Register All-Star, led the Easties to a fine 7-1-1 record, tying with Derby for the Housatonic League Championship. Again the East Haven High School football team retained the respect and admiration of other schools throughout the state. Pacing the Easties’ small but powerful team were high-scoring members Bill Walsh, Jim Stonick, Ron Frangi, Butch Proto, Jim Pascarella and Joe DePino. In the twenty years that Mr. Crisafi has coached the Easties there have been some more victorious seasons but very few have been as rewarding as this one. East Haven again qualified for the Class A CIAC tournament. Both the coach and team members are pleased with the results of this year's team. The results of the efforts of this year’s team have spoken highly of the ability of coach Louis Anastasio Jr. who kept the team in bright spirits and top swimming condition. More school records have been made or broken in this past season than during any single season from the time East Haven High’s swimming team was originated and coached by Mr. Caryle Frawley in 1946, until the season of 1965-66, which marked Mr. Anastasio’s first year as coach here. The members of the team have done remarkably well this year, winning more meets in this season than in any other single season during the last five years. The coach and team members take defeat gracefully and victory with pride, as do all those who practice good sportsmanship. All are looking forward to a more victorious and rewarding season next year. 108 Captain “Mike” RECORDS 200 Yard Medley Relay Urmas Volke, Mike Johnson, Bill Leonard, James McGloughlin Time: 2:02.2 at Wilbur Cross 400 Yard Free Style Relay Fred Shulick, Pat Burke, Michael Johnson, Mike Polio Time: 4:16 at Naugatuck 160 Yard Medley Relay Urmas Volke, James McGloughlin, Mike Johnson, Bill Leonard 400 Yard Freestyle Relay Fred Shulick, Pat Burke, Mike Polio, Bill Leonard Time: 4:23.1 at Amity 320 Yard Free Relay Pat Burke, Mike Johnson, Bill Leonard, Rich Kasprzycki Time: 3:00 at St. Joseph 60 Yard Freestyle Jim McKay 0:34.3 at St. Joseph “Rich” Urmas” “Bill” ADVERTISEMENTS On the beaten road there is tolerable traveling; but it is sore work, and many have to fashion a through the impassable. CHARLES YOUNG For five years Mr. Charles Young has acted as a capable advisor to the Pioneer staffs of East Haven High School. With his help and guidance, we, the staff of ’07, have created a yearbook of which we are proud. This year has been Mr. Young’s last at East Haven. He now looks toward an even more challenging way of life as an instructor in Greece, his new endeavor. All of us of the Pioneer offer Mr. Young our sincere wishes for a gratifying and prosperous future. 139 INDEX PAGE Dedication 2 Appreciation 3 Administration 6 English Department 8 Mathematics Department 10 Language Department 11 Science Department 12 History Department 13 Business Department 14 Office Secretaries 18 Class Officers 23 Seniors 24 Honors and Awards 66 Pioneer 68 Comet 71 Class Histories 72 Candids 76 Organizations 78 Dances 87 Junior Prom 90 Underclassmen Officers and Advisors 92 Faculty Candids 93 Football 96 Pep Rally 99 Cheerleaders 100 Majorettes 103 Basketball 104 Swimming 108 Advertisements 112 140 We, the editors of the 1967 Pioneer, wish to gratefully acknowledge the efforts and assistance of the many people who contributed to the success of this yearbook. We extend our gratitude To Miss Rocco, Mr. Sugrue, Mr! Tierney, Mr. Gersz, and the many other teachers who excused us when we were late or missed class entirely. To Mr. Platt for patiently allowing us to leave to make practically daily announcements. To Mr. Fiorello for capably managing our financial affairs. To Mrs. Schmidt who so willing and unselfishly gave of her time, and whose help in the preparation of this book is much appreciated. To Mr. and Mrs. Jack Brown of O’Toole Publishing Company for their encouraging suggestions and advice in times when the Pioneer met obstacles along the way. To Mrs. Florence Hopkins of Macy’s Portrait Studio for her sincere interest and able assistance in organizing our photographic work. To Macy’s photographers Mr. Sherman, Mr. Brown, and Mr. Kramer who so spiritedly worked to capture the highlights of the Class of 67’s road to graduation, and To Mr. Charles Young for his good advice and encouragement when we weren’t quite sure that we’d make it. Because of the efforts of these people we will always consider the preparation of the Pioneer a rewarding experience and recall it with fond and glowing memories. 142 AUTOGRAPHS AUTOGRAPHS
