Behold the silent Barbara Ricci, Write-up Editor; Angela Pagliuca, Assistant Editor. 66 The Yearbook Staff, headed by Barbara Majewski and supervised by Mr. Charles Young, has worked diligently to prepare an interesting and informative 1966 Pioneer. This book will serve many purposes in later years: it will help us recall the faces of old friends, the laughter of forgotten days, and the memory of some moment of glory for each of us. But to the editors especially, the 1966 Pioneer represents a year’s goal successfully met. Despite many days of challenging work and worry, we enjoyed our task of trying to capture some of the greatness of the Class of 1966 on the pages of our yearbook. Under the calming influence of our advisors. Mrs. Louise Menkin, Mr. William Parker, and Mr. Neal Sullivan, we soon became settled and started our plans that would make the Upperclassmen accept us. Our first step towards acceptance was our class election. Those elected were Marianne DeFelice, President; Pat DiChello, Vice-President; Fran Sprockett, Secretary; JoAnn Moriarty, Treasurer; and Toni Proto, Historian. Before we knew it our first football season was upon us. We placed many of our Sophomore classmates on the football team. Our team that year did wonderfully; we came in second in the Housatonic League standings. Almost before the end of the football season, the annual Magazine Drive began. Although we were the “Little Shots” and strangers to the Drive, we averaged SI0.77 per student, just .08 cents below the average of the overconfident Juniors. Cafeteria number three, a Sophomore homeroom, topped all the homerooms by bringing in $948.83. A few weeks later, because we lost the Drive, we hosted the Magazine Drive Jamboree. The gym, decorated with colorful magazine covers, gave an air of festivity to the dance and all had a terrific time. The basketball and swimming season, like that of football, showed East Haven's true place in sports. Our basketball team, aided by the Sophomores, ranked fourth among twenty-five teams in the C.I.A.C. Class B Tournament. The swimming team, with its members of our great class also turned in a fine season of wins. The year of the “Little Shots of 66 soon passed. Our fears had flown away, and we enjoyed the acceptance of the Upperclassmen. No longer were we “alone on a strange and frightening sea.” 1964- 1965 As ive met the shock of plunging sea.” Just as waves rush to the shore, we eagerly plunged into our Junior year. The class officers who led us through stormy and fair weather were Robert Vigorito, President; Peter Lupoli, Vice-President; Fran Sprockett, Secretary; Marianne DeFelice, Treasurer; and Barbara Ricci, Historian. To keep up with the Seniors, we Juniors showed a great interest in sports. Peter Lupoli, Bruce Baldino, David DeFelice, Frank Grieco, Robert Miranda, John Bagnoli, and Ronald Parisi were all selected for the football team and helped make the year successful. The Junior girls were not to be left out. Andrea Crowley, Jean Mit-nik, and Janet Toce joined the the cheerleading squad; Sandra Jones, Barbara Chaosky, Joan Magna, Sharon Fisher, Sharon Johnson, Cynthia Hurlburt, Lucille Moccia, and Rose Ann Esposito became part of the majorette squad. For the annual Magazine Drive we had the other classes guessing. The Little Shots and Seniors were in suspense while we held back a large percentage of our sales money until the last day of the annual Magazine Drive. The Juniors ended with a high average of $15.41 per student or a grand total of $4,916.10. Junior Gale Canaan was the top salesman in the school with a total of $445.95. Thanks mainly to Gale, Homeroom 101 was the high Junior homeroom, netting $736.26. Fran Sprockett represented the Junior class; she did a wonderful job as co-chairman of the Drive. On November 7, with the excitement from the drive still in the air, the Junior class presented its dance, “Fall Festival.” Decorations followed the theme of the fall season. With this setting we had a most enjoyable evening. In addition to the social and athletic events, the Juniors achieved a high academic standing. On January 28, the twenty-sixth annual induction of the Athena Chapter of the National Honor Society was held. At this meeting, nine Juniors were inducted: Burdeen Camp, Gale Cannan, Nile Heermans, Barbara Ricci, Barbara Majewski, Karl Pieper, Alice Piergrossi, Janet Toce, and John Vitale. During the 1965 basketball season our school team was supported by Juniors Ronald Parisi and Robert Whiffin. The season ended with a twelve-nine season, enabling us to participate in the Class A Tournament. At this time of the year the swimming team with its stars, Howard Eldridge and Jay Flynn, also did well. Eventually, the tide rises to the full; and so eventually, on April 30, our Junior Prom arrived. The West Haven Knights of Columbus Hall was the setting. Our theme was “Some Enchanted Evening.” Gale Cannan and Wesley Meyers headed the prom committee. With the help of many hardworking Juniors, they changed the Hall into a tropical wonderland. Music was provided by Kirk Jerome and his five-piece orchestra. Mary Jane Tobia and Ronald Parisi were crowned Queen and King. Unlike Cinderella’s ball, our prom did not end at midnight; couples attended the annual buffet dinner at the Knights of Columbus Hall in East Haven. That year we were pleasantly surprised. The Drama Club presented its first play, “Antic Spring. Juniors Robert Miranda and Pat DiMeo participated in this most successful and enjoyable presentation. During the last month of the school year, two important elections were held. The first was that of the Student Council. Those chosen were John Vitale, President; Sharon Johnson, Vice-President; Kathy Looney, Secretary; and Mary Ann DeMaio, Treasurer. The second election was that of Barbara Majewski as editor of the Pioneer. Early in June, Boys’ and Girls’ State meetings were held at the University of Connecticut. The boys who attended were Robert Vigor-ito, John Vitale, Peter Lupoli, Nile Heermans, Anthony Toscano, Wesley Meyers, and Frank Meoli. The girls who attended were Gale Cannan and Barbara Ricci. And so the waves erased the imprints on the sand and the Junior Class of “66” was no more. 70 1965-1966 We on the ocean were alone” Just as the sea influences the world, the class of 1966 has influenced the school. In 1965, Robert Vigorito was once again elected class President, and Barbara Ricci began her second year in office as Historian. The other officers elected were Angela Pagliuca, Vice-President: Jean Mitnik, Secretary: and Robert Whiffen, Treasurer. The annual Magazine Drive arrived in the fall. The Seniors, showing one reason why we are known as the Great Class of ’66, won the drive singing all week long our daring theme song, “Catch Us If You Can.” Nobody was able to catch us, or even come close. The Senior Class, totaling §6,316.20 was the only class to meet its quota. For the second year in a row, Gale Cannan exceeded all salesmen in the school and set a new school record by her total sales of $555.53. Salesmen who sold at least §80 worth of sales were rewarded with a trip to New York City, which included a show at the Radio City Music Hall, in December. Many Seniors enjoyed a fun-filled excursion. Success marked the class of 1966 from the beginning. Money seemed to be no trouble. Our Slave Dance, attended by more than 250 students. helped greatly to raise the financial level of the senior treasury. Combined with the traditional senior cake sales, our monetary worries were lessened. The Seniors participated in a marvelous sports years. The football team, under the direction of Captain Ronald Parisi, massacred our arch-rival. Branford, and also won the Housatonic League title. The basketball team, led by Robert Whiffen, and the swimming team, captained by Jay Flynn, also had a most active year. Seniors gained many awards during their last year. Barbara Ricci was elected as D.A.R. Girl. Burdeen Camp and Nile Heermans gave our class further distinction; they were the recipients of National Merit Scholarship Letters of Commendation. Deborah Cross won first place in the “What Democracy Means To Me” contest. Many other Seniors also won awards during their greatest year. The high waters of our early years had passed: the tide was quickly beginning to ebb. Soon the Awards Assembly was staged presenting many seniors with athletic and academic awards. Days passed and the Senior Assembly, under the direction of Frances Sprockett and Angela Pagliuca, was given. Later the same day, the Seniors attended the Senior Banquet, where the new and modern Pioneer 66” was distributed. Too quickly the night of our Senior Prom came and went. Not wishing our last high school dance to end. we attended the Post-Prom Jamboree. Finally the night was over: and. misty-eyed, we prepared for graduation. Hopefully, if not willingly, we left East Haven High School. Graduation invoked a mood of sadness and loneliness. But soon we smiled, for we realized that we were not the first that ever burst into that beckoning sea, the world. Somewhere the tide would rise again. 72 LEFT TO RIGHT: B. Brown, M. Dippold, C. After months of planning, the greatest social event of the Junior year, the prom, took place. The theme, Some Enchanted Evening,” was carried out by a tropical setting. After 12 o’clock, the excited Juniors and their guests traveled back to East Haven for a postprom buffet dinner and dance, sponsored yearly by the Exchange Club. Its objectives are to develop good citizenship, assist in school management, develop leadership, and provide a forum for student expression. The council is composed of representatives who are elected annually from each homeroom. Among the many worthwhile activities carried on by the Student Council this year were the March of Dimes collection, the Christmas homeroom decoration contest, and the baby picture contest. The council continued its support of Jose Avellaneda, a Filipino boy adopted two years ago through the Foster Parents Plan. During the year the council sent him money and gifts. One of the most important jobs the Student Council carries on each year is its sponsorship of the Magazine Drive. Profits from the drive are divided among the Student Council, the general activity fund, and the individual class treasuries. This year, a new fund was established to provide three scholarships. They are to be awarded to one student in each of the three courses, college, commercial and general. The intramural program, under the direction of Mr. S. Narracci, had a most productive year. Activities included were flag football, basketball, co-ed volleyball, bowling, ping-pong and chess. The Kiwis captured the football title after a hard-fought battle with the Philosophers. The Warriors took first place in the over all league standing for basketball but the Buddhists clinched the battle, defeating the Conquerors in a two-out-of-three match. The most widely supported part of the intramural program was co-ed volleyball. Seventeen teams entered the double-elimination tournament. The Beatles of ’66, from Homeroom 10, edged out the Senior Outcasts for the title; this was the second time in the three years they were in contention that they brought home the “bacon.” 109 Sophomore Recess Do you put your feet on the furniture at home?
