PIONEER 63 Published by THE SENIOR CLASS of EAST HAVEN HIGH SCHOOL East Haven, Connecticut A building is made of brick and mortar; a school is built on its faculty. East Haven High School is fortunate in having a core of veteran teachers who have dedicated more than 25 years to the teaching profession. Mrs. Laura Coulter Mr. Caryle Frawley Miss Zita Mathews Miss Mary Rocco Mr. Edward Sugrue Mr. Mathew Tierney 2 DEDICATION For the past three years our advisors, Miss Rosemarie Sammataro, Mr. Dominic Longo, and Mr. Edward Ferriter have given generously of their time, their energy, and above all their patience. Looking back, we realize these vital years would be indeed barren without them. Yet words fail at a time like this, language cannot express our gratitude; we can only say thank you and dedicate this yearbook to you as a sincere token of our appreciation. 4 rew BOARD OF EDUCATION SEATED L. to R.: Miss Anne Byrne, Secretary; Miss Elizabeth Chapkovich, Chairman; Mrs. Mary Fairbanks. Their first objective,—the Housa-tonic League Title. Once this was achieved, they went on to win the CIAC Class B Tournament. Leading the champion Yellow-Jackets was senior Mike DeMarco. Senior Phil Andros and Juniors Bob Warner, Don Dempsey, and Dennis Anderson were all tremendous starters with Walt Brereton, Brian Day, Fred Salvi, Charlie Cottle and Bob Hasse lending invaluable support. All was strange. Charlotte Anastasio and Leslie Camp could not see over the desk in the office; Carol Bertolini had to sit on Mrs. Townsend's lap during assembly. With vitamins and the good food in the cafe all this changed. Phil Andros, who was fastest at the table, grew most. Eleanor Taupier never had a chance. In order for us to be heard above the racket of the Seniors, we were forced to choose five fairly literate classmates to speak for us. Stu Miller was elected to pound the gavel, and Tom Nerkowski assisted him (it was a pretty big gavel), and Marilyn Volpe scrawled the notes and couldn't translate them for the rest of the class. Celeste Porto was our Sophomore Scrooge”, busily counting the pennies and nickles (it seemed we could never scrape up a whole dollar bill at one time)! As Historian Barbara Schmidt began the first page of the Great Record . After 3 months of cowering against walls and slinking around corners to avoid the seniors, we finally had the chance to prove our equality by competition in the Magazine Drive. As the strains of Pennies From Heaven filled the air, we were abound with confident glee. But typically sophomoric, our hopes were ill-founded. We lost. We were proven to be Little Shots in fact as well as in name, but our Jamboree was fabulous. Athletically the boys started off on the right foot. From the bleachers, we proudly cheered our classmates, Julius Granata, Richard Carbone, Tom Nerkowski, John Horn, Don St. Clair, Fred Salvati, Jim Pompano, Charlie Cottle, Joe Scalabrino, Tony Muro, Bob Timpe, Rick DeMatto and Mike DeMarco who participated in football although the only action they saw was at practice. When the weather got colder and the rooters moved indoors, some of our Jayvees Brian Day, Allan Bergman, Greg Cacapardo, Bob Hasse, Bob Walsh led the team to many triumphs. Seldom seen at the games were our mermen Stu Miller, Dave Lucas, Bill Poulton, George Masselli and last of all Mike Gambardella, weighing in at a hundred pounds soaking wet (he was very seldom soaking wet) were spending a good deal of time at the Y Pool. On March 24, THE big social event of the year was our elaborate coming out , the sophomore dance. Spring Fantasy. Because tricycles were not allowed in the parking lot, all our mommies and daddies drove their tots to the elegantly decorated gym. The committee, L. Messina, C. Mellilo, L. DePoto, J. Goodmaster, B. Schmidt, S. Johnson, A. Cooper, C. Vanacore, H. Adams, T. Glinos, C. Porto, L. Festa, P. Ball, M. Volpe, A. Brigante, E. Taupier, T. Nerkowski, W. Brereton, A. Vercillo, R. DeMatto, G Bertuccini, aided by our class advisors Miss Sammataro and Mr. Ferriter has fond memories of Mr. Ferriter shakily ascending a towering ladder to hang the crowning centerpiece. Quick assistance from Miss Beecroft saved our fearless hero from a fall of dignity. With the coming of Spring, the baseball team took to the diamond again, and their ranks were swelled with many eager sophomores. In the dugout were Bill Lewis, Fred Salavti, John Horn, Richy Carbone, Don St. Clair, Nick Rinaldi, Bob Walsh, Charlie Cottle, Art Vercillo, Bob Timpe and Mike DeMarco. No sooner had the gym quieted from the stampede of basketball player's sneakers than a mottley crew of 80 hopeful girls invaded the gym for try-outs. When the dust settled Irene Tierney, Mary Ann Mazzaro, Joyce Chapman, and Sandy Proto emerged victorious as next year’s cheerleaders. The sophomore year soon came to an end and with the realization that we were no longer silly sophomores, but about ready to take the responsibilities of the junior year. 95 JUNIOR YEAR Upperclassmen at last! We were nearing our goal slowly but surely. Now we were starting to be recognized as people instead of little shots. We proved our upcoming by placing second in the magazine drive. A1 Zampiello proved to be a capable right hand man in running the drive. Under the direction of Miss Sammataro and Mr. Longo, our new advisor, we elected the representatives of the class. Tom Nerkowski led us as president. Rick DeMatto followed as vice-president. Joyce Chapman proved to do a good job in keeping our accounts (even though there wasn't much) in order. Once again Marilyn Volpe tried her hand at keeping class notes together. Irene Tierney kept an account of the activities of the class. Having more courage we voiced our opinions more forcefully in Student Council by our representatives: Nick Rinaldi, Laura Upson, Ann Venturo, Paula Beattie. The football team was once again graced with members of our class. At last some of them found themselves in the games instead of warming the bench. Some of them were Mike DeMarco, Fred Salvati, Joe Scalabrino, Don St. Clair, Ricky DeMatto, Tom Nerkowski, Bob Timpe, Richie Carbone, and Nick Colavolpe. The Future Homemakers of American was added to the various activities of the junior class. The juniors had a hand on the executive board of this club with Lorraine Festa as president, Elaine Festa as treasurer, Carol Bertolini as parliamentarian, and Carol Vanacore as vice-president. In the middle of the year, we had the honor of having some of the members of our class inducted into the National Honor Society. Mary Ann Mazzaro, Albert Zampiello, Brenda Post and Meg Hawtin nervously but proudly walked forward to receive their well-earned rewards. Basketball came around again and as in football we were well represented by such men as Mike DeMarco, Brian Day, Walt Brereton, Phil Andros, Bob Hasse, Allan Bergman, and Charlie Cottle. We almost made the tournament this year missing only by a disappointing defeat to Wilcox Tech. But we were bound and determined to try again the next year. The seniors proved to the juniors that they were not totally oblivious of them by putting on the Ring Dance for us. The juniors proudly showed off their rings after receiving them at the dance. Jeanette Goodmaster and Don St. Clair reigned as king and queen of this most important event. Two awards were presented to the two deserving students this year. Marilyn Volpe was chosen as the most outstanding member of her class and won the Citizenship Award of Women Deans and Counselors. A1 Zampiello was honored with the Harvard Book Award. Many outstanding events occurred in our junior year; the most important being the Junior Promenade. The Co-Chairmen, Marilyn Volpe and Rick De Matto, diligently put the pieces of the jigsaw together and arrived at the final picture of Fantasia, the rheme of the prom. It was decided that Fantasia would be held at the New Haven Lawn Club on April 27, 1962. The Junior Prom Fashion Show Committee worked out a wonderful way to present the show to the student body; the scene would be couples arriving at the junior prom. Many lovely gowns were modeled by C. Bertolini, I. Tierney, M. Mazzaro, L. Camp, L. Treadwell, S. Proto, A. Cooper, who were escorted by M. Gambardella, C. Cottle, S. Miller, J. Scalabrino, B. Hasse, T. Nerkowski, A. Vercillo, W. Brereton, B. Walsh, and D. St. Clair, who were attired in attractive tuxedos. Soon this make-believe scene became a reality, and we found ourselves dancing under the stars at the lawn club. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of the king and queen; Walt Brereton and Lenora Messina. As the last of the snow was washed away by the Spring rains and the crocuses started popping up, the baseball diamond became alive again with the baseball team running the bases. About this time a set of elections took place. The sports' captains were elected as well as the new cheerleaders. Brenda Post was the lucky girl from our class who was added to the peppy cheerers. Fred Salvi, Mike DeMarco, and Joe Scalabrino were the gridiron captains. Mike was also elected captain of the basketball team and Bob Walsh along with Fred were named co-captains of baseball. In June the representatives to Girl's and Boy's State went to the University of Connecticut. These students were Irene Tierney, Marilyn Volpe, Rick DeMatto, Tom Nerkowski, Joe Scalabrino, Bob Hasse, Jim Fawcett, Don Amarante, Mike Papacoda and Brian Day. An eventful and exciting year was now coming to a close, and we were now ready for our all-important senior year. 96 SENIOR YEAR In September, 1962, we rounded the far turn and headed into the home stretch. Ahead of us was the finish line—the culmination of twelve years at hard labor. Because the senior class was notoriously poverty-stricken, the officers: Marilyn Volpe, Rick DeMatto, Lenora Messina, Linda DePoto, and Sandy Johnson, started a Let’s Save the Senior Class From Financial Oblivion” campaign. Linda trod a well beaten path to all senior homerooms, where she begged and pleaded for dues. For our cake sales, senior boys and girls who had never been seen in front of stoves before, Tim O'Connell, Ben Giaquinto, Don Amarante, were bringing in culin-nary masterpieces that delighted the discriminating connoisseurs in our gracious cafeteria. In October, we were whisked back in time to the days of the Civil War, as we auctioned off our very own slaves. In shackles and chains on the auctioning block were: Brian Day, Art Vercillo, Greg Cacopardo, and Walt Brereton. This unique dance earned us 2,642,482 Confederate dollars, or 86 real dollars. In the meantime our football team entered a three-way tie for first place in the Housy League, under the able leadership of tri-captains Mike DeMarco, Joe Scalabrino, and Fred Salvati. This year, when Curly made his entrance to kick off the Magazine Drive, we had front row seats. With typical underclassmen's exuberance, the sophomores and juniors (the fools) were determined to make us sponsor the Jamboree. So we slyly allowed their foolish hopes to grow (to build their confidence), then in the end we proved their hopes fruitless. Setting an all-time record of $3,880.81, or 21.58 per senior, we left the over-confident juniors hovering at the ten-dollar mark. Barbara Bonnelli was our top salesman, bringing in $250. As the drive ended, we climbed still another step toward the top . . . graduation. Before Jack Frost set in, the seniors, clad in dungarees and sweatshirts and armed with soap and water, attacked the teachers' defenseless cars; scrubbing them so hard that they faded several shades. Profits were small, colds were frequent, yet the fun was incomparable. Football Formal time rolled around in late November. The senior cheerleaders and football players successfully planned an enjoyable evening for all. Named as reigning royalty were Maryann Mazzaro and Jim Pompano. Time ticked by. As St. Nick was preparing toys (with able assistance from his elves) our elves, Walt Brereton, Ginger Kendrick, Honey Morman, Ann Brigante, Gail Regan, Bob Hasse, and Jeanette DeLucia were planning our Christmas Dance. It was a Wonderland by Night”. For all who attended, the memory of Mr. Longo and Miss Sammataro doing the Twist” (sure was great for their first try) will be untouched in the students’ mind. With visions of sugar plums dancing in our heads (too much fruit punch) we drifted through an evening of gala entertainment; welcoming 11:30 as one would a skunk at a garden party. Homeward we went, stopping along the way at various places. Some honors received during the year were as follows: Joyce Chapman, D.A.R. Award, Barbara Schmidt, Marilyn Volpe, Maryann Bialecki, and Jim Fawcett were inducted into the Honor Society; Rein Freeberg was the first to receive college acceptance; Brenda Post was chosen as the Betty Crocker Homemaker of the Year”; Winnie Glasheen won the American Legion Oratorical Contest; and Caroline Parlato won the Crime Prevention Essay Contest. Soon the bouncing of basketballs and the energetic cheers of the on-lookers could be heard again within the hallowed walls of East Haven High. Mr. Tierney’s witches didn't have a chance against the stubborn Irish Leprechauns who were determined that the boys would win the Housatonic League Title. Even these prophetic little people weren't aware that we would win the CIAC title! Our victorious team was led by our tall men—Phil Andros, who was suspected of using stilts to reach his 6 foot 5 inch height; Bob Hasse, who was accused of sitting on Tony Muro's shoulders to dunk the ball; and Brian Day and Charlie Cottle, the ardent users of elevator shoes; and our medium-sized men—captain Mike DeMarco, he must be a Beech-Nut stockholder; Walt Brereton, eating carrots certainly helped his aim; and Fred Salvati, a whiz in any sport. Our Aquatic wonders, (well, the swimming team) captained by Don St. Clair, enjoyed a rewarding season. He was assisted, and sometimes rescued, by Dave Lucas, George Maselli, Joe Papacoda, Bill Poulton, and Stu Miller. And so here we are at last on June 21, 1963, graduation night in starched caps and gowns, looking back to the many, happy times, the bright laughter, and the minor tragedies of our academic lives. Today we are graduates of East Haven, tomorrow we will be citizens of America. 97 Good Morning To You” The latest style at Updike! Who discovered East Haven? Lunch at the Stork . . .
