SCHOOL BOARD Left to right-Seated: Roy F. Bunting, Secretary, Doris M. Mortimer, Chairman, Marion F. Piller, Annette C. Rucci, Elizabeth H. Butler. Standing: Raymond Don- ovan, Dr. Harrison J. Cameron, Karl Kurth, William J. Murphy. C MARY F. CONROY Resigning Chairman of the Board The year 1957 saw the resignation of Mrs. Mary F. Conroy who served faithfully and energetically on the East Hartford Board of Education for twelve years, the last six of which she was Chairman of the Board. As Secretary of the School Building Committee for seven years, she played a maior role in the dynamic East Hart- ford school building program, with the wise and prudent investment of some Sl l,000,000 in new school facilities. During Mrs. Conroy's tenure of office, the East Hart- ford school system experienced its greatest period of growth, from a pupil population of 4,000 in i945 to 8,600 in 1956-57. ln June of l957, Mrs. Conroy was named by the Connecticut Association of School Boards as one of the four outstanding members deserving honorary recogni- tion for her leadership and service to education. Mrs. Conroy is respected throughout the community and is held in high esteem and admiration. Those who have worked with her have been inspired and encouraged by her calm, dignified approach to problems even under the most trying circumstances, and have felt confident and secure in the feeling that she would deal fairly and wisely with the situation whether it be a routine one or one which presents a real challenge.
