We remember those first few days of uneasiness as we made our way through the long corridors that seemed to offer us both excitement and confusion, We made new friends and be- came increasingly confident with each new day. Now we find ourselves upperclassmen looking into the future. The horizons loom full of challenging opportunities! and their realization depends on our ability to remain upperclassmen in the ranks of citizenship. ' The English Department strives to acquaint every stu- dent with a well-rounded knowledge of the language and its many facets. During our four high school years, gram- mar, punctuation, vocabulary, composition, novels, short stories and the writing of autobiographies were presented to us. In the freshman year, the fundamentals were pre- sented and we were inducted into a new, yet old subiect. As sopohomores, with the fundamentals behind us, we be- gin to improve our technique of writing and reading. Read- ing comprehension and research work were the mainstays of our iunior year. At last, as seniors we polished off our knowledge with weekly compositions, a short story, essays and the reading of some of the classics. Listening to A Tale of Two Cities. I 3' ' C il- f Www .. The study of social science makes real our position in society. Through it we realize town, state, nation, and vvorld problems, and learn to form our own opinions as to their solutions. Our study began fvith Civics, a required subiect pertain- ing to local government and community affairs. Field trips were taken through Tovvn Hall and the Fire Department Head, quarters. In our sophomore and senior years vve became full- fledged politicians for Youth-in-Government Day. Other stepping stones in our four year's iourriey vvere Modern History, which informed us of the present day life in the European and Asiatic countries, Problems of Democracy, a course on the problems facing our democratic way of life, and Consumer Problems, which delves into current consumer topics. United States History was the last step for most of us in our senioryear. Here the economic, social, and political devel- opment of our nation was explained. ' Thus, we have been offered a complete background in social studies in our four years. 7' ,f s T' Kr v. fi sf' ,dig M -.4 4l ' Television makes real the study of the Far East. f . i 3 0 4 z M -l. Those not planning further college study take courses which make use of the interesting application of mathematics. College prepara- tory students receive the basic background of algebra in Algebra l and continue through a complete study of Plane Geometry in the sophomore year. Algebra ll in the junior year takes up the more complicated aspects of the subiect. The most advanced form ot mathematics taught in the high school this year is Trigonometry and Solid Geometry. Trigonometry, in combining the principles of algebra and plane geometry, concentrates its study on the triangle. Solid Geometry uses many of the concepts of Plane Geometry with a third dimension, depth, taken into consideration. The traditional fourth period trig class ....,,, , ..,..... -.... . The learning process and the creative process which was once reserved for scholars we now know to be a part of all high school students. Art courses are open as an elective to all East Hart- ford students. Examples of our art talent are seen in the numerous holiday decorations about the building and posters. 84 LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT Non svholae, sed l'ifl19.,, The first of many new experiences as we started our iourney through high school, was the study of afor- eign language. Enrolled in Latin I, we tackled a new vocabulary and elementary Latin grammar, reading such short stories as Patna Mea. We continued into Latin ll with Caesar and his conquests, then some of us into the story of Virgil and Cicero. Desiring a knowledge of one of the modern lan- guages, some of us chose either French or Spanish de- riving much satisfaction from our study when we found ourselves able to read and conserve in another lan- guage. From the study of vocabulary, tense and mood, we were able to better understand our own language. During our freshman year, we took subiects which gave us a basis for more specialized subiects to follow. In our soph- omore year, we embarked upon Typing and Bookkeeping, choosing in our iunior year, the sequence of studies which most directly prepared us for the position in which we de- sired to work. Some of us continued in the secretarial phase, gaining speed in dictation, acuracy in transcription and de- veloping desirable office techniques, manner and appear- ance. Others prepared themselves for general office work, taking such courses as typing, business law and economics and business machines. Day by day results of the work done by the retailing students were manifest by the attractive window displays and the well-trained salesgirls in the school Buzz Shop, The positions held by our business department graduates are proof of the completeness of its curriculum and the zest with which many of its students have pursued their studies. 5.4-qlvlfrff The boss s letter For school supplies . . .Or fashion highlights. From fresh- men to seniors, boys are mastering skills which materialize into a voca- tion or a hobby. Exploratory courses in drafting, electricity, graphic arts, metals and woodworking are offered in basic shop and general shop courses. Upper classmen, after determining their interest and ability in a special phase of Industrial Arts, choose to take advanced training in such courses as Elec- tronics, Woodshop, Metals Il, and Graphic Arts Il. Increasingly popular has become our course in Driver Training. Stu- dents reaching the age of 16 strive to fit it into their curriculum. With the growth of East Hartford High School-students, faculty, and activities-the Janus took on a new size. The expansion of the book was made possible by the work of the advertising and business staff-both of which reached their goals and exceeded that of previous years. 77 vu ..., T ,L sa- ' X Q- , nbja 'Y U. -1 X ' 'E' ll l I '74 I i onty. STUDENT COUNCIL Throughout the past year the Student Council has tried to promote a spirit of unity between stu dents and faculty. The Council has not merely been a rubber stamp for student opinion but rather has tried to represent the student body by providing leadership tor the school. The most important function of the Council is providing a sounding board for student ideas which might otherwise go unnoticed. The Council controls the budget under the S. A. A., has charge ot club and social activities, and promotes and co ordinates all healthful and wholesome co-curricu lar activities sponsored by the high school. The Council is considered to be a part of the aca demic curriculum in that it provides training tor members in the areas of selt-expresion, effective group participation and civic responsibility. A tradition of East Hartford High School is the annual Christmas Concert with tableaux illustrating the Christmas story, enacted by the Masquers. Their biggest un- dertaking is the three-act play produced in March. The Masquers also sponsor a novelty show for as- sembly. Overcom ing three losses by only one or two points, they closed the season with a four and five record. In spite of these setbacks, the Hornets came back with a first place tie in the Greater Hartford Meet, second in the Eastern Sectional Meet at Storrs and second in the State Meet. This qualified them for participation in the New Eng land Meet at Waterville, Maine. The boys did well against the best of the New England teams, coming in fifth and topping the Connecticut entries. The team's co-captains this year were Dick Brimley and Joe Willis. Dick won the Greater Hartford Meet in a record time of 12:51. He also tied the record on the East Hartford course and placed tenth out of over two hundred runners in the New England meet. Joe Willis ended his fourth year on the varsity with many fine per formances, this being his second year as co-captain. The Junior Varsity compiled a five and two record, winning the Greater Hart ford Meet.
