LANGFORD Superintendent To Members of the Class of 1952, It is my sincere wish that you all enjoy a life of great success and happi- ness in your chosen field, a life that is marked with personal integrity and reliable service to your fellow man. To thine own self be true and it must follow as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man. john A. Langford Superintendent of Schools BOARD OF EDUCATION Left to Right: Mrs. Annette Rucci, Secretaryg Mr. Lester E. Turneyg Mr. john A. Langford, Super- intendent of Schoolsg Mrs. Mary F. Conroy, Chairmang Mrs. Doris M. Mortimerg Mr. j. Fuller Mitchellg Mrs. Rose R. Lynchg Mr. Roger W. Driggs. Absent: Mrs. Margaret E. Evans, Dr. Emanuel F. Golino. 4 STANLEY H. LORENZEN Principal To Members of the Class of 1952, You are leaving school in uncertain times. However, that has been true of high school graduating classes since 1940. American youth is becoming used to uncertain times. Your class has done well in planning for the future in spite of uncertainty. Opportunity for education beyond high school is now more favorable than it has been in the past ten years. It is my sincere hope that each of you will take stock of the things you do best and decide how you will continue your training beyond high school - be it on-the-job-training, night school, technical school, military service, apprenticeship, college or university. The school stands ready to help you now and in the years to come. May good health, happiness, and success be yours. Stanley H. Lorenzen Principal OFFICE STAFF MRS. RUTH CLARKE AND MRS. Most colleges require four years of English, three years of math, two years of science, two years of foreign language CFrench, Latin or Spanishj, one year of United States history, two years of social studies and two years of electives. The requirements vary according to the college. English can really be a lot of fun. After struggling through grammar and vocabulary, one can relax with a long Shakespearean play. Latin, Spanish and French are offered in our Lan- guage Department. Algebra has the freshmen wor- ried. Now they are learning what their AB Cs mean. Geometry seems to be the a subject full of angles, triangles, and straight lines. If AB:AC and BXL-XC and D bisects AB, prove XE:DX. Figure that one, if you can. If you're an algebra wizard, trigonometry is your best choice. Latin II 4 fir AND ELECTIVES Cbgmistfy Anyone interested in bisecting a worm? Then Biology class is the place to go. You also learn how the brain works. Maybe some of our intellectual Sophomores will learn to use their's. Solving nice long complicated problems is the Chemistry and Physics students' delight. Don't let them scare you thoughg they're not so hard! In our United States I-Iistoqf class we study today's problems as well as the easily history of our country. Through typing, stenography, office practice, and bookkeeping, millions of businesses exist in America. We entered our typing room a little surprised to find the letters weren't written on the keys, but how proud we were when we had mastered the drills. Shorthand was like a different language to us until we became so interested that it was a challenge, and in a few months we found ourselves becoming rather competent secretaries. East Hartford High School offered us an exception- ally valuable business opportunity with its modern variety of machines in office practice. Further ex- perience was gained by working in the office as well as serving our school in other capacities. Bookkeeping with its assets, liabilities and trial balances couldn't discourage us and employers can be sure of accurate books if our students are em- ployed. We realize that our school plays a major role in the development of commercial students, and we know that they will carry through life the solid foundation that East Hartford High School has laid for them. I Typing PRACTICAL COURSE AND ELECTIVES WrafMfU7 7'Ld' Mechanical Drawing The practical course is designed especially for the student who does not intend to go to college but directly into the field of work. This course includes subjects such as English, mathematics, biology, history, problems -of democ- racy, and physical education along with a choice of languages, homemaking, or driver training and other electives if the student desires. Along with the required subjects, the students may major in industrial arts. General shop includes experience in wood, metal, graphic arts, art, and drawing and during the freshman and sophomore years it must precede election of a full year of any of these areas. Vfoodworking, which is a funda- mental procedure in the use of simple hand tools and machines, is one of these half-year subjects. Graphic arts includes printing, silk screen, lino- leum block work, bookbinding, and photography. Mechanical drawing comprises experience in basic drafting in the machine, architectural, aeuronautical, and map drafting areas. Art emphasizes strongly the commercial and industrial fields open to stu- dents in future vocational plans. VARSITY FOOTBALL A 1-7 record may not be the best one which can be compiled by a team but the spirit that was put into the games made up for the differ- ence. The one win was over the aggregation from Rockville, and the seven losses were to Plainville, Manchester, Weaver, Hartford, Hall, Southington, and Woodrow Wilson. Coach Karl Kurth had planned on a much better season, but he did not count on losing several key men, Al Grifiin, Mike Novello, Sal Malinguaggio, and john Connell were unable to come out when fall practice rolled around. On the other hand, injuries also played a big part in the bad season the Hornets had as far as wins and losses were concerned. The loss of valuable players during the season was very costly. Consistently, the scrappy, hard-fighting Hornets were badly outweighed 'by bigger and better foes. Every team the Hornets played, with the exception of a few, wound up with superb records. The team was studded with underclassmen, of whom many will return next fall to carry the old blue and white across the gridiron for E.H.H.S. A good season for the year of '52 is in sight with Mike Fisher, Rip Repoli, Walt James, Bob Wood, Tex Woodworth, and Dave Beck to lead the way, and here's wishing them all the luck in the world. In parting I wish to thank Mr. Kurth, Mr. Iackson, and of course, our two swell Captains, Don Connery and Fred Micoletti, who for some years will be well remembered. Cowing and P. jordan Mr. jackson, Coach Come on Ed, make it good!!! VARSITY BASEBALL Starting off the season with a team consisting of many veterans, East Hartford had a potentially good ball club. As the season went on, the Hornets fought hard to stay above the .500 mark. The team the Hornets fielded was far from being denied of a fighting heart. Many times, while on the short end of the score, our valiant team would come roaring back to make the opposition really sit up and take notice that they were not playing a bunch of amateurs, but a crew of real hard battling young men. Having an .800 average is swell, but although our team had a record below 500, they really had fun playing the game and that is the most important factor. Yes, winning ball games ir importanrg it is the next most important factor. The Baseball team was fortunate to have such wonder- ful co-captains in Cody Jordan, hard hitting outfielder and pitcherg and Larry Leonard, a superb young pitcher. Both these boys are splendid people, that goes for the whole team. Larry and Cody were backed up by such stalwarts as Moose Trinks, Tony Agosto, Squeak Jordan, Teddy Cowing, Sonny Dederer, and good ole Wimpy Wilson, the big catcher. Every member of the team deserves a great deal of credit for going out on the diamond and giving his utmost for E.H.H.S. Consistently the Hornets were just above or just below the .500 mark. The season ended with a win-loss record of 5 wins, and 9 losses. Safe at Third!!! Ron Stevens and Paul jordan Co-Caplainr, and Mr. Kaynor CROSS COUNTRY The E.H.H.S. cross country team for the year 1951-1952 Hnished its season with two wins, and three defeats. This record is one of the best in the school's history. Under the line coaching of Mr. Kaynor, and two co-captains, Squeaky Jordan and Ron Stevens, they had a successful season, and hope to have even a better one next year. The Hornet Harriers were led by Squeaky jordan, who took one lst place, one 2nd, two Srds, and one 4th, Next was its sharp-footed underclassman, Buzz Colmer, who did a great job. Third for the team was big Ron Stevens who ran in basketball sneakers but was right up in the first bunch in every race. Others who did well were Frank Barnes, Bill Collins, Dick Jepson, Phil Jordan, a promising freshman: Nick Gramaldi, Richard Cromie, Stentaford, and McGinnis. They also did a fine job in the state meet, finishing 12th out of 21 schools. Individual places in the state meet were: Squeaky Jordan, 28thg Buzz Colmer, 61st, Frank Barnes, 63rdg Bill Collins, 65th, Ron Stevens, 68th. 930' -fb Wa FN i 2 lst Row: j. Bauman, F. Barnes, R. We won five dual meets and lost only one dual meet during the entire season. The one loss was -to Bulkeley High. The 1951 team also took third place in the Greater Hartford Meet and won the Central Valley Championship. Much of the credit goes to the two co-captains, Ed Arens and Bob Davin, for their splendid work. One of the many outstanding performers of last year's team was Bernie Dandley, who set a new half-mile record of 2:09.8. Walt Bojorski established the old mark of 2110.5 in 1958. Other outstanding performers of the team were Bob Devaux, Ed Elfenbein, Rico Petrillo, Bob Carrier, Ed Dom- broski, jim Covell, Frank Hatchett, Noy Desroches, Bill Barrett, and Ron Stevens. Without the coaching of-Mr. Dooman, the team would never have made such a fine record last year. Mr. Kurth also deserves much praise for his work of arranging the order of events and assisting as coach to field event men. The managers were Ken Pearce and Bob Stewart. With the 1952 co-captains, Al Griffin and Bob Devaux, leading many returning lettermen, the track team hopes to equal the 1951 record this year. 3 Left to right: Don Zuccardyg jim Hagertyg Bill Barrett, Co-Captaing Stan Tuller, Co-Captaing Ron Stevensg Ed Kramer. VARSITY BASKETBALL Although we didn't have a winning team this year, it was a credit to East Hartford High School. The boys were ably led by co-captains, Bill Barrett and Stan Tuller, who were backed up by such outstanding ball players as, jim Hagerty, Don Zuccardy, and Ron Stevens. The team played well all through the season and never gave up no matter what the score was. Rounding out the squad were Tom Moore, Clennon Griffin, Ed Kramer, Bob Hanley, Squeaky jordan, and Pudgy Seely. All through the season the team was superbly coached by Mr. Howard Goding. Bill Barrett and jim Hagerty placed among the district's high scorers for the season. l 82 7s J l W , ua, QE Y A f Q f 'Nl if 55 'H . ni fx, YH ,, Xa W V EH lu i If 4' g if a' Q, 1 nv ig' 9, J 3,9 X-Q-...Ji '? . 1 ,Q i 2 3 af' is 6' A l First Rowi Ed Labenski, Ron Shvonski, Bob Ross, Dick Hunter, Lou Dufrense, Ed Elfenbein. WRESTLING CLUB The 1951-52 Wrestling Club was organized four years ago to give boys a chance to keep physically fit between the fall and spring sports The team had no co-captains for the first half of its 1951 season, but was instructed by Mr. Jackson and Ed Elfenbein. In the latter part of the year Bob Carrier and Barack Burr were chosen as co-captains. The co-captains elected for 1952-53 are Bob Ross and Lou Dufresne, two very promising wrestlers. During the past three years, the club has visited many colleges to watch their teams wrestle. Among them was Springfield College. TENNIS Tennis is now in its third year at Old East Hartford. With Bob Hodge as captain of the squad, the boys played some great sets. Mr. Singer proved to be an able coach for the lads. Under his auspices the boys had matches against Portland, Weaver, Bulkeley, Hartford, and others. Next spring East Hartford'High Schools Tennis Team plans to enter the Connecticut Scholastic Tennis Tournament. All home matches are held at Martin Park. This year the boys did a wonderful job and deserve a great deal of credit. The boys, most of them Freshmen, fought valiantly under the guidance of Coach Bowden. Among the in- dividual stars were Sonny Perusse and l.ou Mafassoli. These boys from the jayvee squad will find the varsity a very thrilling experience.
