You young people leaving school will be tempted in a dozen alluring ways daily. You will hear that the end justifies the means. You will see cheats and gratters who seem to flourish. The temptation will be great to cut corners, to trample on the rights ot others, to look out for the main chance. But no immediate popularity, no apparent victory can still that quiet inner voice that knows just how you played the game. With character there is ulti- mate and assured Victory, without it there is empty triumph. HILLIS K. IDLEMAN, Superintendent BOARD OF EDUCATION Mr. Thomas I. Ciccalone, Mr. Carl W. Conroy, Mr. Edgar Beaumont Absent, Dr. Edward H. Truex. At this point in your school career, you have made two kinds of records. One is a Written recordg the other, a deeply ingrained impres- V sion on the hearts and minds of your teachers and fellow students. lt is my hope that both these records will serve you Well in the years to corne. STANLEY LORENZEN Principal The office staff is a very important and essential division in our school organization. As Freshmen and Sophornores, this class has progressed much, but this year the progress has been outstanding. During the past year one of the most successful events of this class, was the lunior Prom. Another was the A. G. E. Dance, which was presented by the lunior and Senior girls. This year many of the members of the Iunior Class became Leaders of the clubs of the school. But probably the greatest advancement of the class was in the development of a fine school spirit, which is essential for successful school life. MILE BY MILE Although this year's team was made up tor the most part of inexperienced runners, it went through a satisfactory season and placed tenth in the all-state meet. Coached by the genial Mr. Iordan, who has won many Cross-Country honors himself, the runners showed a great deal of improvement by the end ot the season. , 73 THROUGH THE HOOPS For the second year in succession the Hornets have sent a hooping five into the class A tournaments. The credit for this is due to Mr. Goding and the outstanding players who made up his team. Our boys swished their way to success game after game, putting their loss column in the wee numbers. A new feature with the current team was playing some of their home tilts at the Hartford Auditorium. The chief reason for the shifting of our home games to the Auditorium was to accomodate a larger number of spectators. The team did not waste much time in getting accustomed to the larger floor. The squad was successfully captained by the capable Pete Bezzini. Thus the hoopsters of the Hornets completed one of their most successful seasons. .Vg G N , H 2 tg A 1 . ,. if ly- 55? 0 P x 'S' 3,2 1 -ew f . . Zebzda, Coach Goding. AROUND THE BASES IN '48 East Hartford High School opened its 1948 baseball season April 21 by dropping a close 12-11 decision to our nemesis from across the river, Bulkeley. The game saw plenty of heavy hitting on both sides with Tony Monk Zeb- zda smashing out a homer, a triple and two singles to pace the boys from overeast. The next two games, we saw the Godingmen trounced by Hartford ll-3 and bowing to Hall of West Hartford 6-3. After dropping three straight, the Eastsiders , paced by Captain Warren Bones Russell, who rapped out 3 hits in as many times at bat, four stolen bases including a theft of home, a total of two runs batted in and three scored, powdered the big red men from Manchester by the decisive score of 10-3. Once started East Hartford went on to win their next three, shading Berlin 3-2, outslugging Hall 10-8, and white-Washing Weaver 3-U, with Bobby Blanc allowing only 4 hits in racking up the home team's first shut-out. In the only extra-inning game of the campaigns, E.H.H.S. lost to Man- chester 7-5 with our opponents pushing two runs across the plate in the top of the 11th frame. Not to be discouraged, however, the blue-and-white went on to win their next two, stopping a five-run 9th inning rally to triumph over Berlin 10-9 and eking out a 3-2 win from Bulkeley with Tony Zebzda doing the chores on the mound and Tommy Parker behind the plate. The last game of the season saw Viola of H. P. strike out Kryzak with War- ren Russell and Terry Crowley in scoring position. This extinguished our hopes of a game-winning rally. And thus we lost our final game of 1948, 5-41 Recapitulation: Six wins, 5 losses, Leading batter: Zebzda .359. EH. 65 runs, Opposition 69 runs, Leading Base Stealerz Warren Russell 21 , Leading Pitcher, Steuernagel and 'Zebzda 2-1. 76 1,4 r , TRACK TEAM 1948 First Row: E. Blanchard, C. Redden, I. Clark, E. TRAMPING THE CINDERS Expert coaching, co-operation, and hard Work were the keys to success for the 1948 Track team. Mr. Dillon and his assistant, Mr. Dooman, did a great job in coaching the team to success. Captained by the diminutive Tony Carroll and paced by such men as the fleet footed Mr. Mercury CEd Blanchardl, Lefty Chandler, and Don Mac- Rae, the team succeeded in notching victories over Bulkeley and Weaver. The team also made a fine showing in the All State meet at the University of Connecticut with Ed Blanchard taking second place in the class A broad jump. At the close of the season the team elected Lefty Ed Chandler as the 1949 Captain. 77 Compliments of LIBERTY STORES EAST HARTFORD S JUNIOR DEPARTMENT STORE START EVERY DAY RIGHT with TI-IE HARTFORD COURANT FIRST IN NEWS FIRST IN SPORTS FIRST IN FEATURES OLMSTED CARROLL 6.
