Lab periods were iamiliar, too, to the students studying bioloQIY, pl'1YSlCS, and aeronautics. Remember those exercises and com- mando tactics we struggled through? In addition to the physical fitness pro- gram recommended by our govern- ment, We continued pre-war sports. 01: 3 Um gcfaaol Ween Began Everyone took English, and during the course of the year We contributed many themes to the local paper based on our school's part in wartime activ- ities. The need for mastery of algebra, geometry, and trig fundamentals was accentuated in order to prepare us lor wartime occupations. Many were the'nigl'1ts we stayed after school perfecting our typing or shorthand. Office practice workers gained valuable experience for a future in business. With our country at war, the emphasis seemed to be placed on practical subjects. However, cul- tural ones were not neglected and the study of foreign languages remained a vital part of our school life. This year, more than ever, the importance of a healthy body was stressed by our school nurse, Miss Marion Sprague. Health courses for sopho- mores became compulsory. Problems of democracy and other social studies classes concentrated on many local problems. Among those considered was the need for a new school. 39 ln times of unrest We turn to music for pleasure cmd relaxation. That is partly why music has had particular significance for us this year as one of our elective subjects. Not all schools offer cooking classe's for boys, but ot E.H.H.S., domestic art courses were favorably received, and many a delicious meal was prepared by the stronger sex . fog? nil ?v 5 H- However, many a member of the so-called weaker sex received her training as a future Rosie, the Riveter in our industrial arts shop. Books on new and old subjects found their way into our hands, and the libe became the meeting place of Student and Knowledge. A N? Eligibility for membership is determined by a student's scholarship, leadership, char- acter, and service. The several who were outstanding in these respects were honored by their classmates with election to the Tucker Chapter of the society. The emblem of this or- ganization is the keystone and flaming torch, symbols of the society's purpose to keep the enduring qualities they represent alive forever at East Hartford High School. With Iohn McGrath coaching the backfield and Iohn McGill coaching the line, the boys were given some tough workouts the first few weeks of practice. Our first game was played with Hamden High. At the end of the first half the score was tied 7-7. Hamden won the game l3-7 with the East Siders unable to click again. The game was rough and tough throughout with East Hartford showing much inexperience in executing its plays. After the game Walt Kryzak was elected captain by the team. Leo Beaulieu, who was previously elected captain, left for the army last summer. As the season rolled on, the boys met defeat at every game. The outstanding game played by the team was with Weaver High. Although losing 13 to U the team showed up well against the strongest team in the district. Walt Kryzzak can boast the only two touchdowns carried over, and Ken Pinney and Ioe Zebzda the two extra points. Although very fast, the backfield was much too light. Ioe Zebzda, the little sophomore power-pack, proved his worth in both backing up the line and carrying the ball. The back- field was comprised of quarterback, Bill Hickey: halfbacks, Paul Mulligan and Captain Walter Kryzak: and fullback, Ioe Zebzda. Though it was fairly heavy, the line was sadly inexperienced. The mainstays of the line were guards George Locascio, Iohn Trousdale, and Billy Burke, tackles Bill Wade, Bob Millerick, lack Collins, and Dave Mazzoli, ends Ken Pinney, lack Little, and Ted Iordan. After weeks of hard practice our team, coached by Mr. George Magrath, was ready for its first big test against Hartford High. We defeated HPHS by a score of 43-39 for our first victory of the season. We then went on to beat the Alumni and Manchester High teams, while losing to Weaver, Bulkeley, and a strong Ellsworth quintet. Our team climaxed its season by Winning the Class B State Championship. Our starting lineup for this year's team was Bob Millerick and Captain Ken Pinney, two aggressive forwards: Bill Wade, a player who used his height to an advantage at center, and Bill Hickey and Paul Mulligan who took the ball off the backboard in regular fashion as guards. Roy Threlfall and Dick Krauskas, two fine substitutes, rounded out the team. 62 These if Who ff Serve fn luemcvziam Charles Aubrey August Cassinelli Robert Derick .
