Ah il 'Db H Chas. Schell, Fred Diehl, Wm. Smith, H. M. Bartholomew, Clarence Reitnauer Board of School Directors The class of l948 is indeed a lucky class. Classes for the past seven years have looked forward to being able to enjoy the most modern facilities for physical edu- cation and athletics, dramatics, library, art, science, cafeteria, and classes in general. You are among the fortunate ones in this community able to participate in a com- plete educational program in buildings complete in every detail. The Board of School Directors wishes you the same good fortune and success for your future. Board of School Directors April 6, 1948 H. M. BARTHOLOMEW, Secretary 'iff?Ef?2 Ei o n i f e r 8 1 9 4 3522222 The Supervising Principal Stanley M. Kurtz To the Class of 1948: According to recent statistics young people under 25 years of age are responsible for more traffic accidents than older folk. This indictment on a class of people Whose reaction time should be the most rapid and who thereby should be able to apply the mechanical devices soon enough to avoid mishaps, is serious. It seems to indicate judgment too far out of the way in the first placeg or does it mean that youth thinks more of indulging in thrills of speed and dare-deviltry than ol preserving human lives? l hope that through your experiences in the classrooms of East Greenville High School you have developed the attitude of think- ing honestly and cautiously before taking action of any kind. Think before you speak and think before you act. May your days be happy ones! 997.7 Supervising Principal April l2, 1948 9 High School Principal Mark H. Layser The School year of 1947-1948 marks a new epoch in the history of East Greenville High School. Plans and dreams of progress are this year be- coming reality. The addition or completion of our building which provides for necessary school facilities is bringing us, continually, lace to lace with new problems of organization, administration, and adjustment. What has been done this year in the interests of a larger and better High School for our communityg is, and should be, only another landmark on the pathway of our ultimate aim-that of providing complete and full educational advantages and facilities to all the youths ol our school com- munity. To have been Seniors in this year of changes and growth should enrich your memories of pleasant and worthwhile experiences as students of East Greenville High School. Student Council The Student Council, the student's represenf tative body, which organized to strive for the welfare of the school, was faced with many complex problems in '47 and '48 These problems were concerned chiefly with the regulation and utilization of the new East Greenville High School building. The Stu- dent Council, supervised very capably by Mr. Layser, immediately considered these problems and handled them very satisfacf torily. A few of the many notable achievements of this year's Student Council are: 1. Introduction of dancing as form of recre- ation during noon hour. 2. Provisions made for efficient operation of school cafeteria. 3. Regulation of assembly programs. 4. East Greenville's initial attendance to the Tri-County Student Council Meeting. The members of the Student Council are as follows: Senior Class: Charles Wetzel, President: Dorothy Skepton, Secretary, Fred Baas, Treasurer, Harlan Edge, Charles Winzer. lunior Class: Richard Wolf, Vice President, Eugene Oosterom, Leroy Stevens. Sophomore Class: Mae Rothenberger, Don- ald Moll. Freshman Class: Wayne Kreider, leannette Heimbach. Grade 8: Ronald Bardman. Grade 7: Dorothy Schantz. Flddress: Milt's 1 9 4 President's Message As we near the end of a never-to-be forgotten period in our lives, We realize that the most important part of our lives lies before us. The future of us, the coming generation, is a most important factor in the future of our nation. The familiar quotation, All the world's a stage and all the men and women merely players, is definitely applicable to our own future. We shall be the coming doctors and lawyers, the ministers and teachers, the stenographers and clerks, the carpenters and plumbers who will carry on the nation's work. I, as president of the senior class, proudly say that we shall carry on the responsibilities placed upon our shoulders by our forefathers. ln this atomic age no one person can say how long we may live upon this earth. Yet we shape our lives with an optimistic point of view. We carry on as did our fathers. Even though we are constantly seeing greater achievements of science, We readily accept these as realities and incessantly strive for still greater knowledge. From our school We have received something which will never be erased from our mind. We full well realize how much our education means to us as future citizens of the world. Not only the book learning but also the moulding of our minds and spirits into worthy characters will make us the men and women of tomorrow. Let it never be said that the Class of '48 shirked its duties and responsibilities. We now leave only the memory of ourselves at E. G. H. S. We hope it is a memory pleasant and inspiring to both our teachers and fellow-students. Thus we say farewell until our paths cross once again in the future, which we boldly enter into with heads raised high and lips that murmur l shall be a person worthy of tomorrow's World. EVAN S. Growing Pains Our Iunior Play, Growing Pains, was presented on April 29 and 30 of last year to two capacity audiences in the Grand Theatre. This was the first lunior Play in the history of E. G. H. S. to be presented two nights. Under the very capable direction of Mrs. Myrtle Groome of the high school faculty, the cast of eighteen boys and girls gave an excellent performance, and the play was acclaimed a success by all who saw it. The plot revolves around Professor and Mrs. Maclntyre and their two teen-age children, George and Terry. George falls deeply in love with Prudence Darling, a new girl in the neighbor- hood. Prudence is merely Hstringing George along, a tact which he, of course, cannot see, and when she drops him, he falls with a tremendous thud. Terry, who is just getting over her tomboy days and can't seem to realize that she must grow up sometime, has her hands full when she discovers that Prudence is trying to vamp her childhood sweetheart, Brian Stan- ley. In the escapades that follow there is much hilarity and many enjoyable moments for the audience. C H S 'I' George Mclntyre .,..... ................ Dear Ruth Dear Ruth. the senior class play, will go down in the annals of East Greenville as an unfor- gettable production. The audience will long remember the beautiful scenery, the exciting plot, and the superb acting displayed by the cast. The cast, under the skillful direction of Mr. D. E. Carmody was outstanding for its accurate portrayal of the various characters. The story concerns a young girl, Miriam, a prodigy, who carried on a correspondence with an overseas soldier, Lt. William Seacrott. In these letters Miriam uses her elder sister's name and photograph. Ruth, the elder sister, was of course pursued by Bill upon his return. Bill is unaware of Ruth's engagement to a local banker, Albert Kummer. The climax was reached through or series of hilarious complications and plot twists upsetting completely the estab- lished household of Iudge Harry Wilkins and his wife Edith. Dora, the Wilkins colored maid, Martha, Bill's sister, Sgt. Chuck Vincent, Bill's friend, and Harold Klobbermeyer comprised the supporting roles. The success of Dear Ruth, was the result ot the co-operation of the entire Senior Class in act- ing, painting scenery, managing, and gathering of the numerous properties and costumes which are essential parts in any play. Besides receiving training, you can attend all football games, and participate in all pep rallies and other school functions. The band, through participation in parades and concerts, collected enough money to pur- chase new uniforms this year. The uniforms are military in style and black and gold in color. Coats and hats were purchased and the band is hoping in the future, to purchase pants to match their coats and hats. . This year almost forty boys and girls wished to become members of the band. Thirty of these candidates were given the new uniforms and several others wore capes. Thus the membership of the band numbered approximately thirty-five boys and girls. The bancl is exceedingly appreciative of its fine director, Mrs. March, without whose untiring efforts, very little could have been accomplished. A also to the faithfulness and co-operation of the band members. Football A hard fighting, but small and inexperienced East Greenville High School football team fought its way through a tough schedule to come through with a record of 3 wins and 7 losses. They tied for second place in the Montco B League. The Greenies lost their first game to Quakertown under the lights at Quakertown by a 13-U score. ln the next game the Yellow Iackets who were not playing up to par lost to a not too strong Wyomissing team by a 21-13 score. These defeats did not discourage the team. They came back to win over Collegeville and Schwenksville by a 19-U and 26-6 scores. After these two victories the Greenies faced a strong Norco team, and lost a heart breaker to this team by a close margin of 7-6. This defeat did not take the spirit out of the boys, for after this they traveled to West Pottsgrove to defeat an underestimated Falcon foe by a tight 7-6 score. On November 1 Lady Luck turned her back to E. G. H. S. On this day the Yellow Iackets lost to a neighboring underdog Pennsburg team by the score of 15-7. This unexpected defeat took the wind out of the Greenies' sail. The following Week they lost a 19-6 thriller to Em- maus but they did not lose their fighting spirit. An injury riddled team, not having enough men left on its squad to hold a scrimmage, played host to the 1946 champions of the Montco B League, Royersford. At half time of this game the Greenies had held their opponents to a 14-14 tie but in the second half the Eagles sparked to a 33-14 victory. E. G. H. S. then played host to Boyertown in the traditional Turkey Day game. In this game the Bears squeezed out a 13-7 victory over the Yellow Iackets. 'Q Mr. Pritchard assisted by Mr. Guldin, took over the coaching duties, and through their leader- ship the team had shown great improvement. lt is expected that the fine coaching of these two men will bring to E. G. H. S. a victorious team in '48. 1 9 4 eggs TT 39 A ... ...... A First Row: F. Schantz, D. Fritz, M. Hothenberger, I. Heimbach, D. Buckrnan, E. Freed. Second Row: P. Layser, B. Stahl, B. Funk, M. The best game of the season was the game played with and at Pennsburg when our girls tied the score lel. The only game de- layed by bad weather conditions was that played with Schwenksville on Nov. ll. Otherwise our girls were favored by cold, brisk days. The whole team played Well this season but special credit goes to several members of the hockey eleven. Betty Baseley, left Wing position, scored six of the total 21 points scored in all the games. Doris Christman scored seven points and Gloria Christman tallied up five. Marilyn Staulfer and Shirley Schlicher are given credit for the remaining number ol points. How- ever, it would have been impossible for these goals to have been made if they had not been backed by the excellent playing of every member of the team. The front line consisted of Betty Baseley, Betty Wiegner, who alternated at inners, Marilyn Stauffer, Doris Christrnan, Gloria Christman, and Shirley Schlicher. They were backed up in the defensive positions by Phyllis I-lillegass, Kitty Hendricks, Mary Lou Zwoyer, Lillian Stahl, Nancy Kern, and Anna Lynch. 40 First Row: L. Saeger, L. Pennepacker, R. Basketball This year for the first time in the history of East Greenville High School, the E.G.l-l.S. Cagers had a gymnasium they could call their own. Since the court was not completed at the time scheduled, the Greenies and their new coach, Mr. Guldin, got off to a late start. The Greenies were overpowered by their lirst few opponents. They took these lacings with- out losing their spirit or Sportsman-like ways. The team gradually improved and came back to give every team they met a tough time, and left memories of well-played and hard-fought games to many sports-loving spectators. Most of the scoring honors went to the underclassmen. Richard Ziegler had 126 points. Rich- ard Leister had 61 points. Raymond Stoneback had 43 points. However, the season became more successful as the next few games were played and the girls had a chance to practice in the new gym. The whole season was marked by the line spirit and co-operation shown in overcoming the faults caused by inadequate practice by the girls in the initial portion ot the season. The Greenies showed this fine spirit by winning six out ot eleven games and by tying tor second place in the league. On a large part this was due to the encouragementyand able coaching of the team by Mrs. Moser. The highest scorer of the season was Gloria Christman with 112 pointsg Betty Freed followed with 66g Ruth Elaine Freed scored 43. Our president was Gene Hngstadt, our vice- president, Robert Smith and secretary-treasurer, Helen Geiger. Our main subject that year was English, as taught by Miss Delilngelis. We can never forget H Tale of Two Cities and those barrages of paper airplanes soaring about the room, can we, Ioanne? This was also the year We witnessed a love triangle Within our class ranks. The members of the triangle were Evan Kranzley, Mary Pfrommer and Lorraine Ritter. There was quite a bit of rivalry for a while, but Mary finally emerged victorious. Qnother romance, which is still going strong, was started then, This concerned Phyllis Hillegass and Bill Flckerman. Hmong some of the extra-curricular affairs was a class party, which was held in the Realty Hall. We had refreshments, dancing, games, and all had a good time. Rs busy juniors we eagerly welcomed six new classmates from Red Hill. For our class officers we chose: Evan Kranzley, President, Gene Plngstadt, Vice-President, Helen Geiger, Secretaryg and Charles Wetzel, Treasurer. We ordered our class rings in October and were overjoyed at their comparatively early arrival in Ianuary. We set February 22 as the date of our Iunior Prom, and signed Bob Smith and his orchestra to furnish the music. However, King Winter had other plans, and threw a blizzard that week-end. The orchestra was un- able to make it and we postponed the Prom to March 22. It seemed that the postponement was in our favor, because we presented the most successful Iunior Prom ever to be given at E. G, Hfter the success of our Prom, we turned our attention to a play. The committee selected l'Growing Pains and it was presented in the Grand Theatre on Hpril 29 and 30. This, too, was a smashing success. This was a year of many new romances. To mention a few: Mary lane and lim . . . Helen and Charles tliershner, that isj . . . Evan and Norma Edge. You could always hear Norma Hckerman and Esther Ben- field discussing Iohnny and Fritz, even while eating. Now at last we are seniors. With an enrollment of 57 boys and girls we chose the following class officers to guide us through our senior year: President, Evan Kranzleyg Vice-President, Gene Ftngstadt, Secretary, Betty Wiegner, and Treasurer, Charles Wetzel. Entering our Senior year we found ourselves engulfed in a new regime. But we as seniors managed to adjust ourselves to the various changes which accompanied it. Our name cards and pennants arrived early due to the efficiency of our class secretary. Under the guidance of Mrs. Groome We chose our class play Dear Ruth. But due to circumstances beyond our control the play was postponed until our new director, Mr. Carmody took over. It was given February Z6 and 27 and was a sell-out both nights. We were proud to see Don Huber and Gene Hngstadt come out in the upper ten per cent of 46,112 seniors taking the Pepsi Cola Scholarship Test. Now with about three months to go until graduation, We still have a lot to look forward to and to accomplish: the completion of the Conifer, which we hope to make better than ever . . . our Senior Prom coming up on May 22, for which we have signed The Harry Romig Orchestra under the direction of Matt Gillespie . . . a top-flight senior assembly . . . and finally on Iune 3, our commencement exercises, the first to be held in our new auditorium. 0 T1 if 9 1' 4-41 Maintenance Personnel CHHRLES KO!-'FEL HBRHHHM HUCHY Since the opening ot our new East Greenville High School building, our janitors Charles Kof tel and Abraham Auchy, have been faced with a tremendous job. By their loyalty and tire less efforts they have successfully overcome our janitorial problems. Their willing attitude and ever present smiles will long be remembered. GRACE PRUTZMHN MRS. R.
