Jvu jl2 CA C ' l(kA 0 4” ' . c t no longer must we gaze aimlessly into the future for we are the future and we are the today— the today of destruction and yet we remain the today of hopes and ideals 3 we cannot be satisfied by merely scanning the total picture we must not view from the outside looking in but from the inside looking out only then can we see the diversities with which our country is faced 4 we can have the future predicted for us we can face the future with hope and faith never knowing what it holds we are free to believe free to love free to leave free to live 5 f and through life there always remain. those few individuals who can look at life. memories of the unique wisdom they possessed never cease to exist. to the class of 1971 we, the aquila staff dedicate our plea for peace through memories of love peace for all mankind learn to love; learn to understand 6 and know life and live life and love life. though too soon they pass from earth. in memory of John Durham Withrow and his desires for peace when man begins to understand he will learn to love and when his love is understood there will be everlasting peace peace for all mankind he loved; he understood 7 THE PHILOSOPHY OF JOHN D. WITHROW, SR. I believe in pure democracy. I believe that this country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. 1 believe that the people have the right, the power and the duty to protect themselves and their own welfare; that human rights are supreme over all other rights; that wealth should be the servant, not the master, of the people. I believe in the supreme worth of the individual and in his right to iife, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. 1 believe that every right implies a responsibility; every opportunity, an obiigation; every possession, a duty. 1 believe that the law was made for man and not man for law; that government should be the servant of the people and not their master. I believe in the dignity of labor, whether with head or hand; that the world owes no man a living but that it owes every man an opportunity to make a living. 1 believe in the sacredness of a promise, that a man’s word should be as good as his bond; that character, not wealth or power or position, is of supreme worth. I believe that emotionalism should be avoided, bias and prejudice excluded, double standardism ignored and discrimination, exploitation and suppression prevented. I believe that all men should uphold justice and fair treatment; common decency, courtesy and politeness should be used and the Golden Rule should be basic in our dealings with our fellow man. 1 believe that the aim of all study, inquiry, research, investigation, evaluation, choice and judgment should be Truth. I believe that the consensus of the opinions of experts and educationally qualified people must be accepted as a starting point in our learning. I believe in an all-wise and all-loving God, named by whatever name, and that the individual’s highest fulfillment, greatest happiness and widest usefulness are to be found in living in harmony with His Will. I believe that love is the greatest thing in the world; that it alone can overcome hate; that right can and will triumph over might.
