with Honor, We Dedicate... . Mrs. Maxine Blackwell has given unselfishly of her time and talents to create a true appreciation and love for the art of music at East. She has brought honor to her school through her never-ending patience and concern and with superior choral performances. The Madrigals were invited to sing for the National Music Educator’s Conference, Southern Division, in Atlanta, Georgia. Out of twenty- three high school and college groups, they were the only high school group chosen. One thing that goes very far toward making life worth- while is a smile; this is a true characteristic of Mrs. Black- well. She is always cheerful, gentle, and willing to help a student with a problem. She brings out the best in a person, making him feel confident and proud. To her, life is sweet because of her friends and the things she and they have in common. She is sincerely devoted to the advance- ment of her students. Mrs. Maxine Blackwell is a dedicated teacher, not only to the subject she teaches, but also to every student and teacher at East. : : L 8 15

to Put Accent on Academics Schools are created for the purpose of a mutual exchange of knowledge of facts, theories, and philosophies. Cultures of, and understanding between, peoples of different coun- tries are expressed through foreign languages and social studies. Mathematics and the sciences teach one to think logically and to work with others and individually to obtain answers to problems. The commercial subjects prepare many students for working on their own soon after graduation from high school. English, in turn, creates an appreciation for our own culture in contrast with those of the past. Learning to listen to all ideas, accepting and re- jecting as they choose, the student and teacher both obtain fragments of a much sought-after knowledge: the ability to live and work in harmony. ey Bixee 17
