C. 27284 Foreword At East there is never a dull moment for the student or - teacher who is interested in making the Mighty Eagles _ Number One in everything they do. An excellent variety of subjects is offered in the academic area; one may obtain a basic knowledge of as many different subjects as his time _and interests allow. Opportunities exist for innumerable _ extracurricular activities, including clubs, money-making = contests, and exciting spo rts. Often when students make outstanding accomplishments in particular fields, they are honored by an award. Awarded or not, though, the true _ Eagle is always striving for the growth, progress, and wel- fare of his school. SS | if fe AR aS Contents Classes. . Ss . 66 Academics. . Mrs. Maxine Blackwell has given unselfishly of her time and talents to create a true appreciation and love for the art of music at East. She has brought honor to her school through her never-ending patience and concern and with superior choral performances. The Madrigals were invited to sing for the National Music Educator’s Conference, Southern Division, in Atlanta, Georgia. Out of twenty- three high school and college groups, they were the only high school group chosen. One thing that goes very far toward making life worth- while is a smile; this is a true characteristic of Mrs. Black- well. She is always cheerful, gentle, and willing to help a student with a problem. She brings out the best in a person, making him feel confident and proud. To her, life is sweet because of her friends and the things she and they have in common. She is sincerely devoted to the advance- ment of her students. Mrs. Maxine Blackwell is a dedicated teacher, not only to the subject she teaches, but also to every student and teacher at East. : : L 8 15 Gs D en DN — © 5 a x a — = 5 yas G S hated 16 to Put Accent on Academics Schools are created for the purpose of a mutual exchange of knowledge of facts, theories, and philosophies. Cultures of, and understanding between, peoples of different coun- tries are expressed through foreign languages and social studies. Mathematics and the sciences teach one to think logically and to work with others and individually to obtain answers to problems. The commercial subjects prepare many students for working on their own soon after graduation from high school. English, in turn, creates an appreciation for our own culture in contrast with those of the past. Learning to listen to all ideas, accepting and re- jecting as they choose, the student and teacher both obtain fragments of a much sought-after knowledge: the ability to live and work in harmony. ey Bixee 17 Administration Our principal, Papa Lewis, administers executive duties, provides leadership and guidance, and makes East “One Big Family.” As we have often heard him say, he “loves us all.” Mrs. Geri Musten, Secretary w PM iii pirites Mrs. Peggy Holder, Secretary Mr. Fred E. There are service clubs that link the school with the surrounding communities. For those who like the arts, the Concert Band, Drama Club, and Performing Chorus offer areas of self-expression. The foreign language clubs offer an opportunity to have fun with a language and the people who speak it. Taking a prospective look at the future can be done through the College Club and Junior Achievement. D.E. and I.C.T. students begin establishing their future work by going to school part of the day and working the remainder, often receiving special training on the job. Binding all of the activities of the school together is the Student Govern- ment which is an important beginning in the preparation of our generation for self-government. 32 Student Government Sends Representatives First Row: Cindy Steele, Pat Ramey, Trish Swaim, Marcia Callahan, Mary Jo Neal, Sherry Smith, Brenda Stafford, Pat Ezzell, Nora Matthews, Becky Ball, Annette Corum; Second Row: Dana Mansfield, Linda Ma- con, Beverly Weaver, Takeeta Holland, Betsy Voss, Mona Binkley, Carolyn Snow, Martha Jackson, Judy Smith, Toni Petticord, Ann Joyce, Susan Landreth; Third Row: Treva Haynes, Myra Moore, Jane Davis, Gale James, Linda Biles, Dawn Cockman, Debbie Motsinger, Carolyn Petticord, Sara Reed, Janice Idol; Fourth Row: Vicki Fulp, Debbie Welborn, Karen Neal, Candy Williard, Pam Jones, Donna Glasscoe, Cindy Smith, Doug Fulp, Mike Buckner, Neil Smith, Debbie Fleming; Fifth Row: Barry Dowell, Benny Hartley, Galen Dilworth, James Peddycord, Tommy Champney, Mike Hartman, Steve Reid. The marching band, majorettes, and cheerleaders boost enthusiasm as “Dixie” rings out over the stands. The action reaches a beautiful climax with Homecoming and the presentation of the queen. A small lull follows as the basketball season approaches. Then, the Mighty Eagles are at it again, dribbling, scoring, fight- ing to win. “All the way in 4-A” is the cry yelled 10 times louder than ever before as the Eagles roll over the tough- est teams in the conference. The spring follows closely, bringing with it baseball and track. Throughout the year, though, win or lose, the Eagles never cease to be proud of their school and live day by day the ideal of sportsmanship. Everyone was looking forward to those Tuesday and Friday nights when they could show their loyalty to their school by just enjoying themselves. And to the players, the boys who sweated it out after school each day to earn a berth in the starting line-up, or even for a chance to play occasionally, basketball season presented an ideal to be achieved. They accepted this challenge with the determination to complete the task. As the season got under way, the Eagles began putting to use the winning combination they had mastered on the practice floor. Soon everyone began to see that the Eagles had what it takes to be number one, and soon they were. East became a familiar name on the top of the Central 4-A basketball ratings. A really happy ending was in view for the players and for the school, an ending which would make an addi- tion to the school’s most prized monument, the trophy case. a2 CTOSSHOne Us @ase es sReEYROIdS aetecen batkiand 59 eae Cldsvilie 48 ........ Few work for the possible re- wards except the satisfaction in their own minds gained from learning. Some, though, are recognized for their special qualities and leadership ability. They have shown excellence in their contributions to the people around them. A few are chosen by the teachers as “Outstanding” for the entire three years they have been at East. Summer: honor programs allow students to further their academic talents, including the sciences, arts, and social studies. The community also gives some awards among which is the D.A.R. Award. None of these are really taken as indi- vidual honors; they all go together to prove to the world that East is the best in every aspect of school life. 169 Gail Castevens Editor in Chief of Talon, Outstanding in Service Cheryl Dixon Advanced Placement Chemistry, Outstanding in Scholarship Vi 170 Johnny Blanton Debbie Barreau Varsity Basketball, Outstanding in Athletics President of Anchor Club, Outstanding in Scholarship 171 Die Carlene Kirkman Anita Edmondson Larry Disher President of FTA, Outstanding in Scholarship Secretary of Senior Class, Outstanding in Service Member of Key Club, Outstanding in Spirit 172 ESD ROES Linda Dodson Teen Page Correspondent, Outstanding in Service Preipnts the THE CASUALS teysreg Carte Wasted David Griffith Madrigal Singer, Outstanding in Scholarship in Spirit ing Lynn Masten Outstand ty Cheerleader, i Chief Vars © EE, Reynolds’ Scholarship Nominee, Outstanding in.
