This group, “THE CLASS OF 86 , began there most exciting years with Mrs. Beichner, in Kindergarten. First grade was the year that everyone thought that they were losing friends, because they seperated the class into two. The girls also started “puppy love this year. Second grade, Connie Caldwell decided to leave our class. Yet in return for Connie, they gave us Jackie Sullivan. This year, we always seemed to be chasing each other outside during recess. Third grade, we had a talent show. The act that everyone still remembers was by Chris Corman, “Tiny Bubbles . We told Chris that when we have our class reunion, she could be our guest of honor if she would sing “Tiny Bubbles. Fourth grade was the year that everyone had the fever for Eddie Hepinger. James Taylor decided to leave our class this year. Our class trip was to Clear Creek. Fifth grade, we were introduced to “Big Bertha . Mr. D always seemed to calm our class down when he'd set the paddle on his deck. Daren Millward joined our class this year, and Laura Bulazo and Jim Timmons left us .. Our class trip was to Salmon Creek, which to this very day is very popular with our class....... Sixth grade, we were at the top of the ladder like this year . . John Lastowski and Johanna Kuhl blessed our class with their presence. During the s Spring Concert the girls were able to show their talents by skating around the gym. When it came time for everyone to show their athletic ability, they had to make a decision between seeing the Pirates playing in Pittsburgh, or going to Slippery Rock to compete in track. The girls' basketball team placed first in the tournament. Seventh grade, we were pushed back to the bottom of the ladder again. Everyone did what the seniors told them to, because they were afraid of what might happen. We went to Drake's Well. Eighth grade we took first place in homeroom decorations during Honor America Week. We also managed to take second place in the overall competition. Our class always seemed to be in the detention hall this year. Miss Seaman was the main cause. Ninth grade the renovations of our school were almost complete. The girls all seemed to be enjoying the workers more than their work. We went to History Day in Clarion. Tenth grade we received our class rings. Many of our classmates began Vo-Tech. Our Boys' Basketball team made it to the playoffs. Last but not least, Mr. Dreihaup blessed our class with his pressence. Eleventh grade was our best year for excitement and togatherness. While decorating for the prom our class grew very close. The Prom theme was Kings Court. Beverly Spates moved away, and Mr. Drei- haup decided to leave too. The PIAA play-offs knew who East Forest was this year, both the boys' and girls' Basketball teams made it to the play-offs. Twelfth grade— was the greatest year of all. The Soccer team had a chance to go to the play-offs. Also the girls' Softball team went to the play-offs. The Seniors won Honor America Week. During our Washington trip, we proved that our class could get along. We lost several people this year, Daren Millward moved during the summer, John Lastowski and Johanna Kuhl moved during School. Andy and Trina Tom both quit. Just so everyone knows, Johanna had a baby boy, and she named it Justin Shane. Dennis Crawford and Ruben James were new members of our class. We've shared many joys and sorrows at East Forest and it is very hard to say Farewell . . . We've gone through 13 yeras of school and now it is time to begin a new chapter in our lives. We wish the best of luck to the following classes. We hope that you have as much fun your Senior year as we have had. As president of student council, I decided that the students would benefit more if we provided fun activities. We achieved our goal with our dance, Christmas caroling, Santa Claus, an Easter egg hunt, and the Honor Banquet. Our rewards were: smiles, happy faces and knowing we're created spe- cial memories for the elementary students. Our rights were endangered when conflicting views clashed over the type of music played in the cafete- ria. The Student Council showed the right stuff and we received the support of the maj'ority of the community. I felt that this year has been successful and we have left the school a better place. Finally I would like to thank Mrs. Roberts for all her help and support—couldn't have made it without you. Their dance was held on Friday the 13th but nothing out cf the ordinary occured. The D.J. for the evening was Jim Posey and everyone had an enjoyable time. Yearbook The 1985 - 86 edition of The Marien is underway. On September 27 the seniors went soliciting for ads for the year- book. On October 2 the senior pictures were taken in addition to some of the school activities. Miss Heffner is the Yearbook advisor this year and we wish her the best of luck. Student Council Minutes Student Council has been helping Mr. Vinopal with ideas for this year's Honor America Week. Sane of the suggestions wore new panel discussions, more speakers, an ob- stacle course, and dressing like your favorite American hero. Student Council would also like a college night . Different colleges could cone here to explain to us about what they offer. - Spirit Week was discussed - problems and can- plaints (1. cleaner water fountains) 2. Late bus notification). Spanish Fiesta A Spanish Fiesta will be held for the elementary Spanish classes around February 20th. Those grades participating will be 4th, 5th, and 6th. The highlights of the Fiesta will be a mini -bull fight similar to those found in Spain. Th r will also be a visit by Don Quijote, a fictional character fran Spanish Literature. This year's theme was “Carousel , and was magnificently displayed with a four horse carousel as the centerpiece. The picture area was a painted park scene with a cast iron park bench and a street lamp setting the scene for Lover's Lane. The crowning area was the Tunnel of Love, with the King and Queen sitting behind a swan boat. Music was provided by a D.J., Wild Bill Elliot, as everyone danced the night away. This was the first year for using a D.J. at the prom, and it really worked out well. Students danced under a roof streamed with pink, blue, and white crepe paper, while surrounding tables were set with multi-color balloons. The juniors would like to congradulate this year's court. Jackie Sullivan and Todd Huth were crowned the 1986 Queen and King, while first runners-up were Beth Carbaugh and Dick Hetrick, and second runners-up were Wendy Robinson and David Payne. This year's after prom was set up by the parents and lasted from Midnight to 5:30 A.M. Among the activities were watching movies, having fortunes told by Sally Patterson, and dancing to the music of D.J.'s Buster and Jim. The Highlight of the night was being entertained by a hypnotist. Jim Beck, Dina Talbott, Chad Weaver, and Doug Corbin were hypnotized, and everyone had a good chuckle watching them do wild and crazy things. Afterward the group went to Bernie's Diner for Breakfast. We would like to thank the parents for their many hours of planning and the excellent job they did in planning the after prom. It was a big hit. 80 Dick Hetrick, Beth Carbaugh, Todd Huth, Jackie Sullivan, Wendy Robinson, David Payne. 19 9 85 86 ATHLETICS Boys Varsity Basketball Frank Petrilla, Chris VanNort, Eric Long, Chad Weaver, Doug Corbin, Mark Snyder, Mr. Thornton, Todd Huth, Matt Cochran, Ruben James, Brad Long, Dennis Crawford, Dick Hetrick 88 Doug Corbin Frank Petrilla Chris VanNort Chad Weaver The 1985-86 boys basketball season ended on a positive note by defeating Kane at Kane by a score of 57-49. This win made the team's record 8-14. As we look back at the season, the players and coaches can be proud of their record. At the start of the season, the main goal was to make it to the playoffs for the third year in a row. However, the inexperienced Bears narrowly missed reaching this goal. Two teams that the Bears defeated on the opponent's home court returned the favor at the East Forest Den. If only East Forest could have added there 3 wins to their record, who knows how they could have done in the playoffs. The 86-87 season should be very promising, although the Bears will lose 6 seniors. Graduating will be leading scorer Dennis Crawford and Leading rebounder Dick Hetrick. The East Forest Bears should be playoff bound next year provided they work hard over the summer and stay healthy during the season. Mr. Thorton would like to wish each senior Good Luck. 90 Boys J.V Basketball Mr. Wolbert, Chad Weaver, Ty Huth, Mike Andrews, Lester Petrycki, Jim Beck, Frank Petrilla, Brian Popoleo, Andy Spicer, Steve Williams Our East Forest Boy's J.V. team this year consisted of eight players: 1 junior, Andy Spicer; 5 sophomores, Mike Andrews, Jim Beck, Ty Huth, Frank Petrilla, and Chad Weaver; and 2 freshmen, Lester Petrycki and Brian Popo- leo. Due to lack of experience, the season started very slowly, with East Forest losing its first six games. As the season progressed, however, the team showed improve- ment with each game, winning six of their final eleven contests to end the season with a 6-11 record. Two indi- viduals, Chad Weaver and Frank Petrilla, had outstand- ing J.V. season, scoring 253 and 205 points respectively. Although these two will almost definitely play all Varsity next season, the remainder of the returning J.V. squad, with the addition of some good Jr. High players, should give us a very competive J.V, team next year. 91 Girls Varsity Basketball Mr. Vinopal, Melinda Carbaugh, Becky Snyder, Jackie Sullivan, Suzanne Pulit, Michele Schrecengost, Connie Caldwell, Michele Crantz, Mr. Swartz, Wendy Robinson, Beth Carbaugh, Amy Kuhl, Cindy Cleveland, Jo Rodgers, Kelly Snyder The 1985-1986 Lady Bears was a team in transition. Gone from the previous years playoff team were five lettermen,. This year's team was a mixture of age and youth as six seniors, two juniors, three sophomores, and two freshmen played on the Varsity squad. Throughout the year the Lady Bears mixed age and youth, trying to take advantage of experienced players, while providing valuable experience for the team's sophomores and freshmen. This year's edition of the Bears began with several goals in mind; to improve with each game, to play eight to ten girls a game, to reach the play-offs, and most of all to enjoy the season. Several games will be remembered by everyone such as the Sheffield game. The Bears lead 30-23 after three quarters, foul troubl and poor shooting shooting in the final quarter al- lowed Sheffield to storm back. Defeating East Forest 43-37. The Bears answered the challenge on the successive nights that followed by defeating the Brockway Rovers 33-29, and stormed from behind to defeat Shef- field 34-24 at Sheffield. The Active East Forest Defense and patiant offense had the Jamestown game close at the half, but a 12-2 margin in the third broke the game open as the Muskies won 48-30. The Bears final match against the Kane Wolves , was close by the Bears pulling within four pts. but htey were unable to crack the wolves as Kane won 52-46, the Bears finished the season ar 9-13. The BEars will lose Beth Carbaugh, Connie Cald- well, Suzanne Pulit, Wendy Robinson, Michele Schre- sengost and top rebounder high scorer Jackie Sullivan to graduation, but will return four lettermen, junior, Becky Snyder and sophomores Amy Kuhl, Melinda Carbaugh, and Cindy CLeveland. These girls will the core of next years Varsity, with J.V. and Jr. High players moving up to insure the Bears will be competi- tive as an independent, and a good bet to reach the play-offs for the second time this year. Senior Lettermen Becky Snyder Lettermen You Gotta Want That Win Melinda Carbaugh You Gotta Be Mobile Agile Hostile Amy Kuhl Cindy Cleveland Girls ].V. Basketball Kelly Snyder, Michele Tarr, Michele Grantz, Melinda Carbaugh, Cindy Cleveland, Mrs. Swartz, Melissa Scott, Amy Kuhl, Jo Rodgers, Joy Clymer The 1985-86 girls Junior Varsity team saw a few changes this year as far as the number of games we played and the new girls on the team. We only had two and a half sophomores return to us. Melinda Crbaugh and Cindy Cleveland were full time and Amy Kuhl was our part time player. Michele Grantz and Melissa Scott were new to the sport this year but we sure put them to good use. They both played post positions which was our weakest area until they came. Melinda was our other post player who lead the team in scoring and rebounding. The 9th graders who played were De Bailey, Jo Rod- gers and Michele Tarr. These girls all played the guard or point position. Cindy and Joy Clymer were the other two sophomores with us, playing Both guard and post positions. These eight, sometimes nime, girls worked very hard as a team, which everyone would have noticed if they had seen them play. Our Record was only 5 and 9 but the effort put forth was 100%. There were several games lost by 5 points or less and one game lost in overtime. Next year will probably see mostly new players again, but we are looking forward to a rewarding and challenging season. 95 96 Soccer East Forest Clinches Tie For Soccer Crown MARIENVILLE — East For- est clinched at least a tie of the regular season soccer champion- ship in Upper Allegheny Valley League (UAVL) with a double- overtime victory over West For- est High School yesterday. 2-1. Matt Cochran headed in a corner kick from Eric Long with 2:30 left in the second 10-minute overtime for the victory. East Forest opened the scor- ing in the first quarter when Long tallied directly from a corner kick that passed though the hands of West Forest goalie Bill Schmitt. West Forest evened the game in the first minute of the second half when East Forest goalie Mike Andrews misplayed a half- field volley from Andy Lee. Andrews overran the ball, and his fullbacks could not recover as it rolled into an unattended goal. However, throughout the re- mainder of the game, fullbacks Ty and Todd Huth played a strong game. Fellow defender Doug Corbin also sparkled until he was Injured In the second quarter. West Forest out shot East Forest 19-18. East Forest next plays at North Clarion on Monday at 4 pm. North Clarion then hosts West Forest on Tuesday in the final game of the season. E.F. But everything within me cries out for Sameness, Continuity, Familiarity, New beginnings are scary for me to even consider. Far away they are exciting, but up close new beginnings terrify me. Tonight I am hating the responsibility Of yes and no decisions that I am facing. Maybe my idealism simply can't handle clear-eyed reality. The way I can't stand realistic movie endings that leave me sad, despondent, and angry. I want to be objective, level, with perspective. Yet I hate the pain of ending a dream, A relationship, A good book, A lonely evening with someone. There is a deep sigh that escapes from the depths of me when I consider a new home, A new set of people, new values, new lifestyles, new goals. I ache to stay with what is familiar. Mostly, I ache to stay with what is secure. I struggle so with endings and beginnings, God. But paradoxically, I can't live without them. Crisis, change, endings, beginnings . . . They are my source of life, direction, hope.
