The effect of the illusion is how it appears to the audience. The preparation for the illusion is everything- from the crimping of a card to the practicing of ten thousand hours. If the preparation has been sufficient and proper, then execution of the illusion is inexorable; before you're even started, the work is done. you can do magic You Can Do Magic is the 1983 Marien theme, one which we feel is very appropriate. In the pages to follow is an account of the year which passed by so quickly. From the sports to the activities to the academics to the friendships, in every aspect of this year, there has been magic. The Seniors had been preparing for the most important magical performance of the year, graduation, and the underclassmen had been anticipating their turn to be in the spotlight. The goal in constructing this yearbook has been to make it a lasting image of this all important time in our lives. We invite you to enjoy the pages in this memory book as much as we have enjoyed putting it all together. 2 ITS MAGIC mystic. . .sorcerous. . .ensorcellment. . .devilry. . conjurer. . .magician. . .wizard. . .abracadabra. . hocus-pocus. . .mumbo jumbo. . .magicking. . .poof, witch. . .warlock. . .soothsaying. . .stupendous. . illusion. . .tricks. . .rabbits. . . spellbinding. . . bewitch. . .mystical. . .sorcery. . .witchcraft. . . enchanter. . .spells. . .trickster. . .apprentice. . . magic. . .bewitchment. . .incantation. . .wizardry, fortune-teller. . .marvel. . .magian. . .spellbound, enchanting. . .sorceress. . . witchwoman. . .exciting delightful. . .captivate. . .mesmerize. . .entrance, hex. . .intriguing. . .mythical. . .alia kazam. . . 3 AND THE MAGIC BEGINS. . . THE MAN IN CHARGE We would like to commend Don for his unselfish dedication to the task that pre- sented itself during the year and a half of construction at E.F. He worked through unbelievable chaos and hassles. Amid, dirt and sawdust which covered the hallways, Don worked persistantly to move the rooms, and make the school presentable for Open House. Then Open House arrived, and the public knew that we were proud of our school. Don, we would just like the say THANKS for all your work, above and beyond your job. Playing all games in opponent's gyms due to renovations, this year's team was never able to bring their show home. If they had, fans would have seen a much different line-up than last year. Gone were six Lettermen from the 1981 squad, placing the Bears in a rebuilding program of their own. Through all the team had to contend with, the Bears grew with each game as they struggled through a 1-15 season. With this season completed, the Bears are looking ahead to next year. With the returning girls as a nucleus, and those coming up from the J.V. team, the Bears should be a strong force in the Up- per Allegheny Valley League as they return to friendly confines of the East Forest gymnasium. 49 Toni Clever Lisa Schweitzer T You've got to want that win- you've got to be mobile, agile, hosti le! 50 J.V. The intent was to keep school news more up to date by publishing a small edition of the paper between larger editions. The idea seems to have been well received by the students. With the addition of the Tuesday Club period the staff has had more opportunity to put together the extra edition. There has been a great deal of effort put forth by staff mem- bers in gathering newsworthy articles. A big thank you must go to Mrs. Hanson who came to our rescue in typing the paper. 66 STUDENT CCUNCIL Marla Harp- Secretary-Treasurer Les Cochran- Vice-President Kathy Lastowski- President Melissa Kuhl, Becky Snyder, Marcella Ekis, Kelly Gruey, Cindy Cleveland. The week was highlighted by our visitors: Lt. Gov. Scranton, Congressman Clinger, Senator Kusse, and Representative Peterson. The Senior Class emerged as the winners of the week-long activities. It was a great time for everyone involved! The pro- gram gave a new dimension to patriotism in high schools. All those involved should be commended. King-Victor Mazzocchi Queen-Rhoda McCanna Twilight Zone was the theme for the 1981-82 Ju nior-Senior Prom. Due to the construction, the Class of 1983 was unable to hold their prom in the gym. This presented a problem- where could we have the prom? The final decision was that the Vet's Club would be the perfect place - and it w as. A bright array of stars adorned the floor, the ceiling, and the walls, giving the room and interstellar effect. The faces of all those attending shone just as the stars did - it was truly a night to remember. Music was provided by Racket , a well-known band with a hit single. The Class of 1983 was truly proud to present this prom for the Seniors. Mike Dina, John Laura, Jacy John Victor Rhoda 80 000C?0Q0j 0$0 000 oooooo 81 82 WE CAN DO MAGIC. Student Council fnenident 109 cl ss gisro v The Class of 1983 has had «any aeaories here at East Forest. Our class has always liked fooling around and getting into trouble. We have lost and gained i any classaates throughout the all the years. All in all we have aanaged to aake it through these twelve years. When we look back, we will reaeaber all of these unforgettable ao- a e n ts, starting way back at the beginning of this special tiae. The first day of school, yes, that was the day that Ron de- cided he would start his long chain of disciplinary probleas. He was sent to the office. We all raced to school to see who could get the trucks first. We always drove those trucks. I guess that is why we have soae of the best drivers in our class. First grade was the beginning of our school days. We now went to school all day, not just for half a day. The girls learned about love. All of the girls fell in love with Christopher Roberts. I aa sure we will never forget learning how to print. We had to aake lad- ders all day long. Mike Geyer had his little spot in the classrooa, the corner. Second grade was very sad for us. It was the first tiae our class was separated, and to say the least, we were not happy about the deal. All the girls were heart-broken, Christopher Roberts left us. In third grade, we realized we had a ausical talent. A group of girls started a singing group. We decided to stand on the reading dance and sing for the guys who were playing cars around We also becaae detectives during the Jack the Ripper scare, etery and woods in search of the ghosts. Letters in trees . learned what Kia was afraid of. During show- escaped and juaped on Kia's desk, leaving Then we learned, Kia hates frogs!!! Mrs. liking to Lenny Tobolski. She chased hia around the rooa Philip Bailey never learned a uc h in fourth grade, he was always coloring. I aa sure we will never forget our first book repor ts. learned what was in store for us in the years to coae. Fifth grade was one of our aost adventurous years. We gained two new classaates this year, Mike Flechsig and Paul Andrews. Beth, Kia, Lori, Denise, and Toni decided that they wanted to aake their clique even closer. They all decided to becoae blood sisters. This led to Toni fainting and Lori trying to gain courage with a staple. The girls found a way of co a a u nic atin g with the boys. We played a version of cowboys and indians. The challenge of the sexes began, also. The boys and girls began to fight against each other about everything. Mr. Deffen- baugh taught Billy Joe what it was like to be hung in the closet. We did soae traveling in order to learn about our environaent. We took two trips to Salior Creek. Beth lost her glasses in the creek, and , of course, we all had to go swiaaing to find thea. This year we were introduce to Big Bertha . We found that if you were nice to Nr. 0., he would be nice to you, but he stood for no aessing around. tables and the table. We explored the cei turned up all over, even In fourth grade, we n-tell, Mike Geyer's frog soaething behind for her. Beary took a all the tiae. lays N e 110 In the sixth grade, ae gained prestige and authority. Lori showed us all how tough she was. Hr. Furnish just could not get Lori to keep her hands off of Billy Joe. Boy did the girls hate the boys that year. The guys got away with everything while the girls got in trouble, especially in the lunch line. He took a trip to Sea World. Kia decided they would go and the search was on. M found out what scared was right there to greet thea. and Ki got a surprise on • ove fast if they had to. year. After being the oldest, we caae over to the high school side to suddenly find that we were the little kids, and that took • uch adjusting. We had a problem with Beth. She thought it was the 4th of July. We had our class trip to Drake's Well. A trip Toni will never forget. She got a lecture froa Professors Kia, Denise, and Beth in the bathrooa. This is the year our reputation began. Lori taught us what a submerged shoreline was and Steve had the bright idea of burning down the shop. Hr. Thornton taught us how to lean on a podiui. We gained Dan Laiison Hike 0., and Pat as classaates. In eighth grade, we were becoting accustoaed to the life on the high school side. We all began to grow-up and with that our cliques faded away. We gained Lisa and Robert, soon to be called Peabody. foraally part of the high school. It was 1983, the only one. We lost Dick for a he seeaed to have a strange fascination Don were the cause of no aore science Toni and out on their own. Naturally, they got lost, hen Toni and Kia returned to the bus, they when Hr. Furnish and Hr. Pascarella were Host of us went to our first circus. Denise the bus. We all learned that they could really Steve Gore becaae a aeaber of our class this ninth grade year for the we were Class of returned. He and new word for tentacles, was boring, so they held us this year. Dee a show I n a quiet w hile, but when he for burning erasers froa the textbook. In tenth grade, Toni taught us the and Barb decided that one of the dances boxing aatch in the bathrooa. Dee left Eleventh grade was a fun-filled year. We decided we would how ii portant we were by designating a hall all of our own, The Junior Hall . Soie aeabers of our class decided that if the Seniors a skip day, so could the Juniors. The law wanted to go, too. yet another classaate, Denise. The year was highlighted by, the proa, TWILIGHT ZONE. This year renovation of our school We especially enjoyed the proa aeetings and fun we had after dance fit perfectly. It was held on Friday the 13th and there full aoon. This was a year for roaance. We gained Joyce as This brings us to our Senior year. We were finally Seniors and we did let everyone know it. By the end of the first week of school, all of the u n de rc 1 as s a e n were sick of the word Seniors. We had a brief addition to our class this year, Rick. He was soaething special. I aa sure no one will ever forget hia, especially Hiss Seaan. We all began to realize that we would be on our own soon. Our class began to grow closer. We all finished our Senior year with aany aeaories. When we look back, we will laugh and we will cry. No aatter what, we will always cherish our days at East Forest, and look back and say, I aa proud to have been a part of the Class of 1983 . could have We lost obviously, began. t h e a .
