INTRODUCTION We, the staff of the Marien, would like to invite you to join us in watch- in a structure’s birth. We're going to begin when the ground is broken, and finish when the structure itself is built. We'll even meet the construction workers and the contractors. We've skipped the five years of planning which came before, because for each structure, those are very different. We remember vaguely the day the two foremen came to look over the land. From that day forward, they carefully took the land and prepared it. They leveled it and tested it. Even after the ground was broken, they endlessly watched as each brick was added. Once in awhile, the workers used cheap material or added the wrong bricks, but the foremen, every- time, usually on their own, lovingly repaired it. We were each very excited and a little scared the day the ground was broken, each wondering what type of structure we'd be, each hoping to be well built. As we soon found, they'd only hired the best workers and our confidence grew. We even found that some of the workers weren't hired. They merely stopped for a few weeks, or months, to help the construction along. Some of us even had a couple who stayed for a couple years and became more skilled in finding the leaks and more adept in replacing the bricks. We grew attached to them and hoped that they would stay after construction was done, to make repairs. The building grew with each passing year until finally one year, it was finished, or at least it appeared to be. The roof was there, but the struc- ture realized that it would need endless repairs, many of which it would have to make itself. The structure watched as each construction worker left, pausing to say a last good-bye, touching-up even as he walked away. We suddenly realized that we had been built, but ultimately left on our own to decide what type of struc- ture to become. Everyone, especially the foremen, watched proudly as we stood straight and tall against the sunrise. And so now we watch as the ground breaks and the structure rises. Please, join us, it's absolutely fascinating.

Dedication As each of us looks back over our high school years, there's always someone who stands out in our memories, not only for his teaching, but also for the many other things that he gave us which can't be learned from a school book, someone who taught us not only history, but also understand- ing, someone who had the patience to work with us when we didn't think we could, until we were the best that we could be, someone who was always ready with a smile or joke when we just needed to laugh. He taught us that learning and friendship can go hand in hand. He dedicated many long hours to help our girls develop a sense of pride. There were many touchy moments when each of them felt like turn- ing in their uniforms and giving up, but he patiently worked with them, until, each time, they finished with a new surge of confidence. Confi- dence which made them champs and took them to the play-offs for four years in a row. Through the team sports that he coached, he taught us the impor- tance of cooperation and friendship, on the field and off. For these reasons and many others which can only be expressed in our hearts, we'd like to dedicate the 1980 Marien to Mr. Brown. His presence will be greatly missed at East Forest High.
