Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1980 volume:

INTRODUCTION We, the staff of the Marien, would like to invite you to join us in watch- in a structure’s birth. We're going to begin when the ground is broken, and finish when the structure itself is built. We'll even meet the construction workers and the contractors. We've skipped the five years of planning which came before, because for each structure, those are very different. We remember vaguely the day the two foremen came to look over the land. From that day forward, they carefully took the land and prepared it. They leveled it and tested it. Even after the ground was broken, they endlessly watched as each brick was added. Once in awhile, the workers used cheap material or added the wrong bricks, but the foremen, every- time, usually on their own, lovingly repaired it. We were each very excited and a little scared the day the ground was broken, each wondering what type of structure we'd be, each hoping to be well built. As we soon found, they'd only hired the best workers and our confidence grew. We even found that some of the workers weren't hired. They merely stopped for a few weeks, or months, to help the construction along. Some of us even had a couple who stayed for a couple years and became more skilled in finding the leaks and more adept in replacing the bricks. We grew attached to them and hoped that they would stay after construction was done, to make repairs. The building grew with each passing year until finally one year, it was finished, or at least it appeared to be. The roof was there, but the struc- ture realized that it would need endless repairs, many of which it would have to make itself. The structure watched as each construction worker left, pausing to say a last good-bye, touching-up even as he walked away. We suddenly realized that we had been built, but ultimately left on our own to decide what type of struc- ture to become. Everyone, especially the foremen, watched proudly as we stood straight and tall against the sunrise. And so now we watch as the ground breaks and the structure rises. Please, join us, it's absolutely fascinating. He taught us that learning and friendship can go hand in hand. He dedicated many long hours to help our girls develop a sense of pride. There were many touchy moments when each of them felt like turn- ing in their uniforms and giving up, but he patiently worked with them, until, each time, they finished with a new surge of confidence. Confi- dence which made them champs and took them to the play-offs for four years in a row. Through the team sports that he coached, he taught us the impor- tance of cooperation and friendship, on the field and off. For these reasons and many others which can only be expressed in our hearts, we'd like to dedicate the 1980 Marien to Mr. Brown. His presence will be greatly missed at East Forest High. CLASS HISTORY The class of 1980 has always been very close. We're one of the smallest classes in the school, so we've had more time to get to know our classmates. We've always liked fooling around and getting into trouble, hasn't cramped our style one bit!!! Our good times have always managed to attain that not-so-mannerly air and still haven't gone as far as breaking the law. To illustrate this let's go back to the small room above the firehall that we used as a kindergarten 12 years ago. The first day of school, yes, that was the first time Joni, Flash, and Vernon decided to try skipping school. They thought it would probably would be more fun to play firepersons than to attend kindergarten. Unfortunately, they got caught and have not yet had the courage to try again. Then came the day that Reba decided to entertain us. Have you ever heard of Mary and her little lamb? Well, we were visited by Reba and her great big horse. We all had a wonderful day, however, the teacher was slightly less than pleased. First grade was even more adventureous, for as we grew, so did the trouble. It was the first time our classes were seperated, and to say the least, we were not at all happy about the deal. It was, also, in first grade that the teacher announced that we were all going to take a walk. Boy, did we think we were getting a treat!!! It was not until later that we discovered that we were really escaping a bomb. It was in second grade that we discovered we had a true born romantic in our midst. This was the year that Jim-Zim admitted having fallen madly in love with Mary Anne. We all began to hear wedding bells shortly after, and affairs began to spring up all over. In third grade we began to acguire the little bit of culture that we have. We began to learn much about literature, thanks to Mrs. Nesbella's story hour. We learned of such interesting and refined characters as Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, and The Mouse and the Motorcycle. In fourth grade, we all learned how to be nasty and founded the I- Hate-Paula Fan Club. We also became quite skilled in faking while playing our fluto-phones, we kindly allowed Kathy to play lead while we all played background. Mike Morris was also the big attraction for the girls that year, as he entertained them with his wonder-filled stories of life in Equador. Fifth grade also held many surprises, as we were introduced to Big Bertha . Mr. D., we soon found out, was nice to you if you were nice to him, but stood no messing around. Vernon was especially careful after being thrown out into the hall one day, desk and all. Mr. D. had an interesting way of allowing you to get what you wanted, you simply had to sing a song for the class. Also, in fifth grade, came the wonderful flouride days. We solved the problem of the terrible taste they left in your mouth, we just shoved them down the holes in the drain of the water fountain. With sixth grade came the true birth or our class. We had such lovely episodes as Paula, Jo, Joni, Robin, and Kathy spitting sunflower seeds in the cafeteria, and Ekis's great idea of putting out volcanoes with a garden hose. It was also in sixth grade, that we discovered how creative we could be, by making spider wevs and paper mach6 maps for Mr. Furnish. We also can't forget, although we try, our delightful comic books featuring such heroes as, Barney Banana and Robin Raisen. After being the oldest, we came over to the high school side to suddenly find that we were the little kids, and that took a lot of adjusting. Jeff gained a new nickname by wearing his Christmas outfit that would have looked just fine if the slacks hadn't been brown checks and his shirt, blue and purple polka-dotted. We also learned that Paula and Eddie had the strongest fascination for the woods at Loleta. So much that when we all loaded the bus to come home, they were mysteriously lost . Eighth grade seemed to be our year for romance. When we became freshmen. Flash's nickname got a new meaning. This time it wasn't because of the clothes that he had on, but rather their absence. Paula and Dee became famous when we were Sophomores for the way they entertained us on the softball busses, while Lisa was busy fainting in Mr. Wolbert's arms. This was also the year when we had lost one of our classmates, Kathy Hepinger. Our Junior year was highlighted by, obviously, the prom, The Magic of Middle Earth. It took much work, but it was certainly worth the time and effort. Steve gained a nickname, Pedro, that really shouldn't be discussed. Stephanie had this uncanny attraction to maps and Mr. Vinopal. It was also the last year for us to participate in the magazine sale. We finished it off winning for the fifth straight year, a record that probably will never be broken. This leads us up to our senior year. At the start, it proved to be one that we'd never forget. We spent the first half of the year just learning how to be seniors, and that's no easy task. Not only did we have to learn how to buck line at the water fountain and skip classes, but we also learned the art of getting motivated . Flash greatly enriched our vocabularies in Accounting by looking up new quarter words. We'll all finish our senior year with many fond memories of our years together at East Forest High. In that world a man may, perhaps, count himself fortunate to have wondered, but its very richness and strangeness tie the tongue of a traveller who would report them. And while he is there it is danger- ous for him to ask too many questions lest the gates should be shut and the keys lost.
