Separated from our cross-town rivals liy the lVlonongahela River. we enjoy companionship in our own little world. Here in this ivy-covered home. students have found many friends and faculty members who have helped them whenever possible. The freshmen tread eagerly and ambitiously, hoping and trying hard to make their four years at East Fairmont the best four years of their lives. They tread from class to class getting accustomed to the rooms and teachers, and trying hard for a straight A average. The sophomores, 'now a little more used to their daily routine, are beginning to settle down and receive, more of their purposed education. Now, knowing that the straight A average is possible, they try their best to make the honor roll. - The juniors are having it a little rougher, bored with the same routine and beginning to think of the years beyond graduation. Finally the seniors, who now tread for the last time the path wom by their feet, are gazing into the past and dream- ing about the future. They think back into their grade school days and their four years of fun and work at East High. They look out into the future and that long awaited day of graduation. Yes, we say again that many different feet have trod the halls and campus at East Fairmont, and they will con- tinue wearing the beaten path for many years to come. As-we go stepping toward our future, we shall remember the cooperation of our teachers. When we were freshmen, we crawled, as though we were infants. As sophomores, we toddled. Our junior year we hegan walking toward and planning our future, and as seniors, we strolled through with the help and friendliness of our faculty. Teachers have a lot to cope with, as teachers, but all in all they are still welcoming each student to their classroom with. a cheerful, and friendly smile. They are also willing to be of assistance to anyone wishing help. Teachers and students should he one big happy family, growing up together, working together and laughing together. This is the way the students and faculty of East High get along. We find that teachers as well as students are willing to help with school activities. Who chaperons our dances? Yes, teachers again. if the faculty didn't sponsor the school eluhs, would we have them? No, we would not. A famous quotation is, 'LThrough these portals pass the finest people in the world. We think that fits the E.F.H.S. faculty perfectly. o Q. .957 5 ,f W Sn yy 3, . 45 lu uling Hn- lfalsl Vuirnxmml fm-ully and slum Huis ye-ur wa- uw umlvr 21 vmnple-ls-ly I nir1isll'z1lim1 hvzlnlml Ivy WV. Although the time that they all have looked forward to and dreamed of with anticipation, has finally arrived, they seem to dread leaving. They are leaving a very familiar place which they have grown fond of and will always remember. They are also leav- ing many friends, including students and teachers, whom they may never see again, The seniors' chosen careers, whether they be attending college, joining the armed forces, or getting a job, will take them many places where they will meet new friends and have many added re- sponsibilities. Whatever their chosen careers may he, the experience and knowledge they gained at East Fairmont will serve them well. The seniors can happily recall the social events they attended while at high school. They can remember the many dances, football, and basketball games they eagerly attended. Most of all, seniors will remember graduation day, for on this day they will receive diplomas to show for all their endeavors. Not only does it show for hard work but it also shows understanding, patience and co-operation from parents and teachers. 20 551' , ',- ,r 5 3 5 Y v 2 X . Z' Q 551 ., v? St. i, N ff ws is m JSM -s. 9-X' VC- 6134 Walking through East Fairmont, we see the Juniors, pre- paring to take over the responsibility which befalls every senior class. After completing eleven years of school, in which they have become educated both scholastically and socially, they are ready to begin the last step in the phase of their life which should prove most important in their future. The sophomores, who are having a wonderful time and are half way through their high school days of homework, tests, and activities. They are looking forward to next year when they can plan the big dances and look forward to the big game with West Side. Last, but not least, we see the tiny freshman footprints, that point in all directions. Through the year the teachers have done their best in introducing and preparing them for the material aspects of life, giving them guidance and promot- ing those things essential to the well-being of their develop- ment as they progress into the future. Soon they will be sophomores and can really be and feel a part of the school. As we walk through E.F.H.S., we find that extracurricular activities ex- hibit a cross-section of the students, interests in any school. At E.F.H.S., the array of activities assist in developing self-control and sportsmanship through group participation. These self-adjusting activities help to train the body as well as the mind and provide a feeling of faith and sincerity. Activities develop a spirit of unity, sociability, and friendship. This year under new administration, we have several clubs that were dissolved by lack of interests, and by which new clubs were organized under new supervision and members. By sacrificing personal glory for the good of the group, students are taught the basic ideals in life-those ideals that are more valuable than the knowledge that can be obtained from all the books in the world. If each member of the group practices these ideals, the school will have achieved its chief purpose. 66 5 1 ff , 'ivwyzk Q A 1' . 'MW' 92 When walking through the halls, several members of the student body have been heard expressing different opin- ions about the praise that should be given the athletes who have given the school fair play and school spirit, as well as skill in all their endeavors. They have proven their loyalty to East High daily, by having bruises, tired muscles, and sore backs. They have given the student body a sense of pride and an undying school loyalty. The day of a game there is excitement in the whole school. The games play a most important part in the school cur- riculum. They supply fair play as well as pleasure. They have given the student body courage and determination to stand up and fight for what they want. The student body has stood behind the team all the way. This is evident in the increase in attendance at the games. There are more students attending the games this year than any other. More people have taken part in the cheering section. Several players remarked that the good season was due to the en- thusiastic cheering and good spirt of the student body. Two of the Bees' ten game schedule were cancelled because of the Asian flu epidemic. Scoring power and a strong defense were evident as the Bees started out by beating Monongah 25-O and Washington Irving 13-7. At mid-season the Bees had compiled a 4-1 record. After that the Palatiners had a three week vacation as a result of the flu. Thus two games were definitely cancelled and one postponed. Once again Fairmont East went down in defeat to their cross-town rival, Fairmont West, by the score of 26-7. That loss gave the Polar Bears their eighth consecutive victory in the series. Carl Deavers was selected as first team center on the Big Ten Team and third team center on the all-state team. Carl also received a scholarship. to West Virginia University. Receiving honorable mention on the all-state and Big Ten team were the Palatiners' two halfbacks Jim Beadling and Bill Branson and end Boy Peters. Leading scorers on the team were Bob Newbrough and Jim Beadling with 26 points each. Quarterback CARL DEAVERS Center IST ' x First row, left to right: Peters, Kline, L. Early one point decisions at the hands of Weston and Elkins proved to be the season's downfall. All season the Bees have been an up and down ball club, playing exceptionally well in six games, two each with Elkins. Grafton, and Mannington. The Bees also played well in tourna- ment competition by beating their Crosstown rivals, West Fair- mont, in the Holiday Festival, and thus reaching the final game with Morgantown which ended in the Mohigans' favor. 56-47, At press time the Bees had only played seventeen of their twenty game schedule, and therefore the results of three games were unknown. ln the first round of the sectional tournament, East High faced West High. IOI While walking through the halls of East Fairmont, we see the feet of the dainty popular personalities of the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes. The highlights of the year of 1957-58 were topped by the Miss East Fairmont Dance. The waiting and anxiety were well worth-while, when the snowy night finally arrived. The popular lassies who repre- sented the senior class strolled down the floor of the gymna- sium to the music of Winter Wonderland. After the snows finally thawed, dreams came true with Star Dust of the junior-senior prom. Beautiful pastel gowns floated down the gymnasium to the music of Virgle Vingle. Throughout the halls and attending all activities are the twenty-two students that were chosen by the student body as school popularities. They were selected for their talents or out- standing personalities.
