Carpenter George Dorcas James Vve were Filled with sorrow when we learned of time deatb of ivliss Dorcas James in Fairmont General Hospital on December 16, 1945 Sbe was one of the best loved persons among us because slae tried to be lwelpful to all of us in every way slae could. All tlarougli tlie years of her increasing illness, even when she was too weary to worlc she never complained of her taslc, but continued at worlc long after sbe seemed ex- hausted. Anyone except a very courageous person would have become lielpless montlis before her doctor told ber slae must liave tbe care only a ilospital could provide. Miss James was born in Fayette County, Vvest Virginia, on October 19, 1915, and received her early education there. Her latlmer spent bis life as a public school teacher and public school principal. bliss James continued in school getting an AB. Degree from Marshall College at Huntington in 1954 and a Master of Science Degree in Biology lrorn West Virginia University in 1935, and continued ber study in Art at the Chicago Art lnstitute in summer terms. She came to us as a teacher of Art lor both East Fairmont and West Fairmont High Schools in September, 1955, and remained in this position until ller recent untimely death. She lived only thirty years. We remember her as an earnest, capable teaclier who always did more tlian ber position as a teacl1er demanded ol ber. She spent hundreds of hours preparing, setting up, and malcing exhibits ol the Worlc ol her pupils, for tliem and for tbe community slie served. But we remember her most as a person of extraordinary courage: one wlio realized ber life span must be sliort and laced that fact, but did the best she could with time time she liad been allowed. No one can do better than tbat. We shall always remember ber lor her splendid acliievement and example ol courageous living. W. C. VVhaley U.S.N. Carpenter, Jack '38 i'Pvt. Carpenter, James '29 fcpl.
