ity lx the 1938 football season in review east vs. farmington the east high yellow jackets lost the first game of the season to farm- ington. when the final gun sounded the score stood 8 to 0 in favor of the farrnington farmers. east vs. fairview east fairmont high's smooth-working football machine romped rough- shod over the fairview gridders to chalk up a 21 to 0 victory. east vs. shinnston a fighting east high team went down to defeat after playing a thrilling game. but the breaks were against them and shinnston won by a score of 7 to 13. east vs. morgantown the bees battled morgantown high gridders on even terms for three quarters, but weakened in the final period, and morgantown won. the score was 13-0. east vs. mannington the bees upset a favored and heretofore undefeated mannington eleven with a fine exhibition of the pigskin. sport. a pass, muto to mazzie, in the last minute to play, spelled defeat for the green and white wave. the score was 6-0. east vs. grafton the east high gridders dropped a hard-fought game to grafton in a blinding snowstorm. although the bees rolled up eight first dwwns to five for the opponents, the bearcats took advantage of the breaks to chalk up' a 19 to 0 victory. east vs. weston due to a change in schedule, the Bees journeyed to weston and lost the game. the minute men proved too strong for the east high gridders and handed them a 21 to 0 defeat. east vs. barrackville the east high yellow jackets, led by johnny talerico, speedy halfback, defeated a stubborn barrackville machine by the score of 14 to 6 at south side park. ed hughes, paul brandimarte and cleo white were the outstand- ing defensive performers for the gold and blue. east vs. west the most thrilling conceivable climax to a brilliant season of football came when east fairmont locked horns with the invincible west fairmont outfit, and whipped them conclusively, to avenge the loss suffered last year. east fairmont smashed, battered. butchered and rode rough-shod over the polar bears to take the long end of a 19-14 count. the thousands who witnessed the east-west classic still shudder from the gridiron thrills heaped upon them during the tilt as the stands settled down for a desperate game of football and uttered silent prayers for the

success of the east high boys. they were immediately electrified by a run back of the kick-off for a touchdown. it began to look like an easy east Win. after this, however, the yellow jackets lapsed into stage fright, and west took advantage of it to score fourteen points in the last half. in the second stanza the bees took a new lease on life, fanthomed their opponents tactics, and rolled up two touchdowns. it was the most spectacular come- back seen around rosier field in years. to mention any particular names, however, without touching on the merits of every single man in the play would be an insult. all of them excelled themselves in this, their last game of the season. Q athletic sweater awards east fairmont high school bids farewell to boys who have served loyally and faithfully to the gold and blue. to show our appreciation to these athletes the lettermen's club presented them with blue coat sweaters with gold service bars and the letter e on the left side. congratulations boys! the following four year men received sweaters: max kisner, carl nuzum, golf rollins, raymond betonte, jack rosenberger, clarence lynn, ray bartho- low, cleo white, junior carpenter, jack carpenter, harry martelli, eugene hawkins, scott janes, ellsworth cain, june poe, henry helm, joe pileggi, ralph davis, and ed hughes. ray bartholow and raymond betonte, members of the east high wrest- ling squad, were named oo the all-state scholastic team by a vote of coaches. selected on the all-state second team were paul brandimarte and george travis. sixty-seve
