CLASS POEM if if if We enjoyed our days at school, But often disobeyed the rule, So we could have a little fun, After classes had begun. To our teachers we give thanks For putting up with all our pranks, For teaching us to read and write, For helping us to be polite. To our school we bid adieu, Where'er we roam, we'll think of you. These years have been eventful in our lives as well as in history, We have worked and played at school, had joys and sorrows, successes and failures. Let us look backward and review the outstanding events of our school years. ACT I Remember the attention we received as Freshies ? How bashful we were then! Under the leadership of the class officers-Leroy Sweigart, John Wittel, Joanne McCauley, and James Engle -we held many important class meetings. Later in the year a few of our boys emerged as Junior High basketball stars. Three prizes were taken in the Junior High School Spelling Bee. A roller-skating party was held at the Olympia Skating Rink in Lancaster. As Freshmen we held the championship in the Junior High girls' Ping-pong tournament. The class also carried off honors in other sportsg some of these being basketball, baseball, and soccer, Our most thrilling event of the year was our Promotion Exercises at which time seventy-eight received cer- tificates. Medals were presented to the following people: Activities Awards, Kathryn Gallagher and Leroy Sweigartg Girls' Sports Award, Patsy Groffg Boys' Sports Award, John Wittelg Scholarship Awards, Helen Garber and James Endslow. Much of the success in this, our first year at E. D. H. S., was due to the capable guidance of our class advisors, Miss Margaret Campbell and Miss Nancy Hendrian. As Freshmen we certainly set the pace for our ACT II What a thrill to be Sophomoresl John Wittel headed the class that year and was loyally supported by an efficient staff: James Endslow, Kathryn Gallagher, and James Engle. We boasted seven boys on the Junior Varsity basketball team and two girls on the hockey team. The Student Council had four of our outstanding members. Seven of our class displayed musical talent and helped make up the Band. Four members were chosen to be on the Safety Patrol. On the school newspaper, the Beacon, were four of our classmates. We sponsored a successful and outstanding magazine campaign. Our class advisors were Miss Mary Strickler and Mr. Ross Houseal. ACT III As Jolly Juniors we chose James Endslow president and John Wittel his assistant. Kathryn Gallagher re- corded the minutes and James Engle balanced the budget. On the Student Council were: Kathryn Gallagher, Elizabeth Hawthorne, George Maloney, Richard Drager, James Endslow, and John Henry Brubaker. Kathryn Gallagher and James Endslow were inducted into the National Honor Society. Joanne McCauley became editor of the Beacon. Ella Mae Zink and Kathryn Gallagher were her assistants. The class had eighteen representatives in the Senior High Chorus. Our playgrounds, buses, and halls were well guarded by eighteen members of our class who served on the Safety Patrol. The basketball team had only three members of the class of '44: Harry Aungst, Eugene Marley, and Captain John Wittel. One of the cheerleaders for the season was Janet Beshler. This year we had three May Day attendantsg namely, Jean Marley, Mildred Mowrer, and Kathryn Gallagher. Merle Good, Eugene Marley, and James Engle were their escorts. After much deliberation over the style of class rings and pins, we finally placed our order with the Union Emblem Company. Miss Carolyn Roberts and Mr. Eugene Saylor were our class advisors. ACT IV future years. Scene I Then came our Senior year-the most eventful of all. This time we again selected James Endslow, presi- dent, Merle Good, vice-president, Kathryn Gallagher, secretary, and Joanne McCauley, treasurer. Merle Good, Ella Mae Zink, Joanne McCauley, Kathryn Gallagher, James Endslow, and James Engle partici- pated in the school play, Crazy House. We agreed to publish a yearbook and Ella Mae Zink and Joanne McCauley were elected editors. James Endslow, Kathryn Gallagher, and Merle Good were the business managers. The members of our class who were inducted into the National Honor Society this year were Elizabeth Hawthorne, Joanne McCauley, Ella Mae Zink, and Effie Ruth Eshleman. Scene II Let us hail Robert Kaley who entered the Army Air Force in January, Ernest Miller who entered the Navy in the same month, and Wilbur Kendig who joined the Army in February. Five of our boys are now wearing the silver wings of the Air Force. They are: Air Cadets James Arndt, James Houseal, Clyde Nentwig, Wilmer Oberholtzer, and Paul Sperla. To Mr. A, Ross Houseal, twice our class advisor, we wish to express our appreciation for the cooperation and guidance which he has given us.
