The guidance program means many things to many people. In the definition and questions that follow, a point of view is presented in relation to a few of the many common issues that exist. Why use guidance service instead of guidance ? The word guidance frequently has been misunder- , stood. So many concepts have been attached to the word in education that it has outlived its usefulness. Its connotation, for example, is frequently counseling. The guidance program provides many services including counseling which is considered as the crux ofthe program I 5 v-...aw What services does our program provide for the pupil and the school as a whole ? The major services are: ll Individual inventory, 21 Occu- pational information, 31 Counseling, 4JFo11ow-up 5lTest- ing, 61 Special programs to meet special needs. MARCUS T. P fr P7 - X S xv- -x Mr. Guido's classroom is a laboratory of democratic living. Both Mr. Guido and his pupils practice the principles of American democracy. A D ' Appfwach To I. ' Most people assume that the reason for edu- cation is to enable the individual to provide more for himself than the uneducated are able to do, Modern education, however, has a more .mportant job to do. In these days of human dis- tress and uncertainty, the individual must have coarage, skill, and the ability to meet and assume responsibility. History plays an important part in the education of modern youth. Through the knowledge ofthe past gained by its study, the individual has access to a set of values by which he can guide h.s life. His intellect becomes skilled as he descnbes, an- alyzes, and re-solves problems, then proceeds on a direct Course of action. Thus, armed with know- ledge and skill, he has courage to face the future and whatever responsibility it brings. . . .Joseph D. Guido ?1 S ir.
