JOURNALISM The Journalism Class prepares the school yearbook and the school paper. Some of the objectives of this class are to acquire habits of clear, concise written expression, to acquire a critical attitude toward news and an ability to evaluate the worth of publications through wide and intelligent reading of newspapers and periodicals, and to acquire skill in collecting, condensing, and organizing material from all sources of information. COMMERCIAL The Business Department is organized to serve three basic needs: personal needs, occupational needs, and prepara- tory to higher training in business above the high school level. In shorthand and typewriting, the overall objective is to develop the ability to use shorthand and the typewriter as writing tools with emphasis on accuracy, speed, and rate of production. The overall objective for occupational needs is to bridge the gap between school and office so successfully that stenographic graduates can go into those jobs open to high school graduates with poise, efficiency, and skill. ,sw W mm MRS. The Beta Club is a non-secret, leader- ship-service organization for American high-school stude nts. The Beta Club was founded to stimulate effort, reward achievement, and encourage its mem- bers to continue their education after high school. In practice it does this by promoting ideals of honesty, leadership, and service among high school students. The head of the high school must approve members, and help to determine mem- bership standards. Qualifications for induction in the East Davidson chapter of the Beta Club are thatyou must have a ninety average be- fore you are considered for membership. Members should show leadership, honesty, and service at all times to their fellow students and teachers. East was priviledged this year to tap seven- teen new members into the Beta Club because they showed all of these fine qualifications. , . 4.351 U ftf f 624: --Q ,,.4 W WW M Q. f ,- , Q 3.1 ,a f .W , . , . ',.,, E P ,., The 1963 East Davidson football season was one of ups and downs. After being rated as one, if not the top team in the conference before the season began, the Eagles rolled over Ledford, Guilford, Jamestown be- fore succumbing to rival North Davidson in a big upset. The Eagles then trounced powerful Trinity and went on to win 4 of the next 6 games, losing only to Randleman and tieing Central. This was also the year that Coach Doby almost reached the lOO victory mark, a goal that he is sure to attain early next season with the well rounded and experienced team that will be returning. The Eagles again this year will be one of the teams to beat for the conference championship. The desire of the boys, coupled with the excellent coaching of Coach Doby and Coach Byerly, and the wonderful support by East's loyal fans assures that East will remain one of the best 2-A football teams in the state for some time. 103 The high-lite of the season- East 28--Trinity 6. BASKETBALL While starting slowly and not winning a great number of games the girls, nevertheless, are steadily improving and are certainly no pushovers. It is also expected that the Ea g l e tt e s will make a fine showing in the conference tournament because by this time the girls will have gained ple nty of experience and should have improved their natural abilities. That so called fourth quarter slump has plaguedlthe Eagles again this year just as it did the previous year. However the team has improved considerably and shows signs of being one of the roughest and most improved teams in the conference. Charlie pivotson Everhart's right foot. C ra nfo rd, David Lomax, Mike Faircloth, and Donnie Beusse. In the center is Coach Jake Byerly. BASKETBALL Eagles battle for tip. Almost all the games this year have been very close, the boys winning some and losing a few. With the returning lettermen from last year and the younger boys gaining experience in the first half of this year, the Eagles will surely prove that they are to be reckoned with by the time the tournament rolls around. 6 East ups the score by two more. Perfect form. . . good for two. M . is ffl AQ 4 f f , ii Makes it look easy, doesn't he? is in ki Give 'er a good heave for ole East High TRACK The Eagles' track team underthe direction of Coach john Doby carried the school spirit and desire to the cinder path in a way that they all can be proud of. Fighting against inexperience and little interest in track by the student body, they strove through the season with moderate success. The team, however, with most of the boys re- turning should make a better showing this spring and send East's track record to new and loftier heights. 75 P ful- V ,R- i 1 gui' E That's just not fair! How- ever, many of the games lost were by close scores and could have gone either way. The one bright spot, how- ever, is that CoachByerly lost only two regulars from last year's squad and his returning team is loaded with letter- men who have both the experience and the desire to win. This spring should tell a different tale in the way of baseball at East.
