Dexter Maine Dexter Ma!-H6 QURHNTH S PAST A GLIMPSE INTO THE PAST Corinth today is a proud little town of scrubbed white houses and nch farm lands The mam street 18 teeming with activity and the shiny new cars whiz past the flashing neon lights of the stores. In the farmer's living room is the televrsron set which carries news and ideas from all over the nation The refngerator rs filled to the bnrn with concentrated Juices and all kinds of frozen foods Certainly this Corrnth is very different from the one that confronted Mr Abner Trbbetts and Mr Daniel Budge in 1792 on their early exploratory excursions For then there were no tree Lined streets nor neat farm burldrngs nestling among the rolhng fields. There was only a great stretch of forest watered by the Kenduskeag stream Where now the placid cows are grazing on the Davis Farm there lived a tube of savage Indians Recogmzrng a good thing when they saw rt, Mr Trbbetts and Mr Budge unme drately abandoned their prevrous plans of emrgratrng to the Oh1o Country and decided to make this area of fertile farmlands, home In honor of their original destrnation this land was named New OhlO Massachusetts It rs interesting to note that Mr Skinner sold Bangor rn order to buy Corinth at a mere fifty cents an acre To what is now West Corinth he brought his family and here using a large rock for the back of his fireplace he built a camp Although the camp is gone the rock rs st1ll standing As the members of the Skinner famrly group marned and settled close by the neighborhood was properly named the Skinner Settlement In 1'7'74Jos1ah and Robert Srmpson with a few others, passed through the Skrnner Settlement and bu1lt their homes two mrles to the north It was known as the Simpson Settlement until rt changed ownership rn 1818 then rt was known as the Eddy Settle ment. The years went by and then in 1808 Deacon Hunting saw that with the cooperation of his httle colony the woodlands of the easterly side of the Kenduskeag could be con vetted into fields of gram The Deacon then proceded to do everything he could to hasten the growth of his commumty called Hunting Settlement. which is now East Corinth Three of the houses that were built are still standing and are owned by Arthur Campbell, Carroll Duran, and C J Wrggm 1 The latter is now the residence of Dr Walker 1 The Academy Rocket June 1938 This page sponsored by DR GEORGE R WALKER East Cormth Marne 'X 9 Other settlers followed, including Daniel Skinner who was originally from So from 1792 to 1811 newcomers swelled the varrous settlements until in actuality there was one large community The men of the different locahties contrlbuted therr own particular skills for the benefit of all, In these early days Sundays were strictly observed and manv of the settlers opened theu homes for rehgrous services This was the day to don the best brb and tucker and do the weekly visitrng Although the settlers were still ln the wrlderness, special care was taken to teach the children Instead of the schoolroom the frresrde took its place Parents and children alike learned to read and went on the become self instructors in other fields The formal schools rn Corinth were establlshed early but there is no way of knowing the exact date One of the first informal schools or perhaps the first, was rn Skinner parlor The teacher one of the young bndes of the community gathered all the small children together and taught them from pamphlets she brought with her from Massachusetts Thus the nineteen years as a township were quiet, happy years By 1811 the population of Corinth had grown to number thirty two famihes These families feeling the need for an orgaruzed government sent a petition to the General Court of Massachusetts, asking that they be allowed 'to mcorporate into a town by the name of Corinth' and have all the privileges of a town Th act of mcorporation was passed June was held in the house that rs now owned by Mrs Nellie Skinner ln 1810 Mr Samuel Houston began farming east of Corinth and drew up a petition asking the town to make a road to his farm When the petition was granted other settlers began clearing lands and soon a whole new neighborhood had sprung up whrch was called Savage Settlement Soon the name was changed to Easr Rrdge and this name has survived until the present day The farm lands were rich crops were large and the famihes increased until the road was extended from the East Ridge to the Hudson line Some of these early settlers predicted that in beauty the East Ridge would some day equal her elder sister East Corinth 3 ln 1823 Rev Stephen Dexter came to town and became the frrst resldent minister He was well lrked by all the people and equally at home on the farm or rn the pulpit The Baptist Church was burlt near his home but was later moved to a better location Afterwards there were two Methodist Churches, one in East Corinth and one in West Corinth with one pastor filling them both And so the development of Corinth was well on its way wrth the estabhshment of both schools and churches. Corinth s children today no longer learn the three R's before the hearth but enjoy the privilege of attending well equipped modem schools 2 The Academy Rocket June 1943 3 Early Gleanings and Random Recollecnons by Mason S Palmer This page sponsored by A Skolfreld Henry MacCl1nt1ck GENERAL INSURANCE and BARBER SHOP East Corinth Maine . . , ' . . . gs 21, 1811, and the first town meeting was held March 17, 1812 2.
