The objective of the overall ROTC program is to pro- vide an opportunity for young men to supplement their college degree with a second lieutenant's commission in the Army Reserve, and the EC unit can quite capably meet its obiective. Advantages of membership in ROTC include the fact that freshmen and sophomores are granted immediate draft deferments with no military obligations, and that the program may be dropped at any time during those two years. Additional privileges afforded ROTC cadets includes the opportunity for membership in the honorary military fraternities: Pershing Rifles for underclassmen, and Scabbard and Blade for juniors and seniors. Jim Thurman ROTC Cadets The young man of today who enrolls in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps and earns an officer's commis- sion becomes a part of America's oldest and noblest traditions - the tradition of training for leadership and of bearing arms, when needed, in the defense of home and country. He joins the ranks of the countless distinguished leaders who have made the United States the great na- tion it is - leaders who, like himself, prepared in their youth, were ready in time of crisis, and rose to great- ness in the service of their country.
