The Reserve Officer Training Corps began its first semester on the East Central campus in the fall, and promises to be a great asset to the col- lege community. Lt. Col. Bobby J. Davis, who arrived from an assignment in Vietnam to head the East Central unit, outlined a slate of plans that offer maximum efficiency and opportunity for prospective ROTC cadets. There are two programs offered by ROTC. One is a basic four-year curriculum for freshmen and sophomores in which they learn the funda- mentals in military science with leadership and management being stressed during the iunior and senior years. The other program is a two-yes course of study beginning in the iunior year fc those who have missed the first two years c ROTC Training. A summer encampment is required of bot programs and the two year program includes a additional summer camp assignment to make u for the training usually received in the freshma and sophomore years of the four year progran The East Central ROTC Unit offers the for year program, but is also making the condense two-year program available to sophomores wh might wish to ioin ROTC.

The objective of the overall ROTC program is to pro- vide an opportunity for young men to supplement their college degree with a second lieutenant's commission in the Army Reserve, and the EC unit can quite capably meet its obiective. Advantages of membership in ROTC include the fact that freshmen and sophomores are granted immediate draft deferments with no military obligations, and that the program may be dropped at any time during those two years. Additional privileges afforded ROTC cadets includes the opportunity for membership in the honorary military fraternities: Pershing Rifles for underclassmen, and Scabbard and Blade for juniors and seniors.
