I have received awards during my junior high and high school years at East Central, but I feel being elected as Mr. E.C.II.S. is the highest honor I have received. I feel that without the help and guidance of my teachers, fellow classmates and most of all, my family this award would not have been pos- sible. I would like to thank the senior class, which I am proud to be a part of, for twelve of my greatest years of my life. The best of luck in the years to come. One of the rea- sons for this brightening glow is that the faculty and students of EC. have decided to make it so. In the face of steadily in- creasing accountability, the teachers and students have responded with char- acter and initiative. More paper work and new pol- icies have not deterred that E.C. people form their dedication to be the best. I hope that all of us will realize the awesome blessing that is ours in this place during this time. Tim Anderson High School Principal Racks H. Robinson As we near the com- pletion of the 1987-88 school year, I realize how fortunate we are to have met, talked, worked, and played with one another. Throughout this year, we have been successful in opening a little further that ever-expanding win- dow on the universe of information. The cooper- ative spirit that is abun- dant on the East Central campus has made this possible. In traditional fashion, the attendance at school that morning was exceptionally low, more so than in past years due to the fact that there was no early dismissal. By nine oiclock the cafetorium was beginning to fill with some of the fmest couples in the valley! The Kings got right down to rocking business and kept the music coming with everyone's favorite tunes. The dance floor was packed and jumping! Attendance at this prom was tremendous - over a thousand juniors and seniors came out and partied! No doubt about it; the 1988 prom was the best prom in EC. history. The I 987-88 football season was a joyful and a disappointing one for the East Central Hornets. Beginning the season minus fourteen team members the twenty-four member squad fought hard and courageously in all of its games. The Hornets lost two heartbreakers to C lara. 16- I5 and St. John. 8-7. Other losses were to George County. Bay St. Louis, St. Stanislaus. Stone County and Vaneleave. Often outmanned, The Hornets never quit trying in any of their contests. The East C entral squad captured two victories. defeating Pass Christian. 7-0 and rolling over Pearl River Central. 16-7. Bath wins were especially sweet as they marked victories over these schoolsfor the first time in eleven years. The Pearl River Central game was the Hornets' Homecoming. With a 2-3 conference record. the Hornets finished in a three-way tie for third place in the Deep South Conference. C 0A CH ES: Rocky Long - Head Coach. Each year. the annual staff begins the year with ideas to make the yearbook better than the year before. The process begins with choosing an annual staff. The sponsors look at each hopeful, checking grades, dependability, and personality traits. After careful selection, the annual staff attends summer camp. At camp, the staff participates in learning activities which will benefit them as they produce the yearbook. They are also required to submit pages conveying the theme of the upcoming year. The pages are judged according to journalism standards involving theme, creativity, and layout form. The 1987-88 annual staff was very pleased to accept one of the few superior awards presented at camp last summer. This book reneets their achievement. One of the major responsibilities of the staff is to subsidize the cost of the annual. Since the sale of the annual does not pay for the production of the books, the staff has to use many resources to accomplish this goal. These resources include: sale of ads, dances. beauty pageants, and many other activities. Being an annual staff member can be fun but at the same time requires a dedication to the staff and the position. Members of the staffwere: organizations, Dinah Parker, Sheric Hunnings; features, Wendy Gordon, Melanie Caner; sports, Jodie Hudson, Kim Davis; seniors and ads, Reta Williams, Kim Grierson; students, Amy Furby, and Laura Lee Walters. The 1987-88 Academic Awards Banquet was held May 12, 1988 in the high school cafetorium. Two awards were given in each subject. The ac- ademic award was presented to the student with the highest av- erage, and the merit award was presented to the student whom the teacher thought had worked the hardest during the year. SKILLS This year the sopho- more Class had extra work laid out for them. The newly introduced skills test in grammartliterature kept both students and teachers busy. The skills are required by state law and are locally developed by teachers from each of the three schools in the district. The tests help the sophomores develop skills and prepare for the BSAP test they will take when they become Juniors. This test must be passed in or- der to graduate. The stu- dents have different opin- ions on having the test. as do the teachers. Mrs. D. Smith had this to say. Til try to focus on the positive aspects of any new direc- tion in the field of edu- cation. therefore. my sights are directed toward the greater achievements of my students. I have found that my students have adopted a more re- sponsible attitude toward assignments, tests and progress than ever before but there is less personal time to devote to each stu- dent. I count that a great loss because teachers are mentors who direct and guide students in many areas other than the con- tent area. The 1,536-square-t'oot building will house valuable histori- cal artifacts and feature exhibits marking the various periods of Jackson County's history. Space will now be available for more effective displays and tours by students, citizens and tourists. The original iron gates of the old Jackson County courthouse that stood on Delmas Avenue from I875 to the 1940's will be placed at the entrance of the ancient roadway that will be restored as an access to the new museum and the historic fort. t Jacksbn County Board of Supervisors Post Office Box 998 Pascagoula, Mississippi 39567 The new building is located southeast of the Old Spanish Fort and was designed in an architectural style compatible with the 265-year old fort. that was in actuality a carpenter's shop built on the plantation 0f French-Canadian Joseph Simon de la Pointe. The Jackson C ounty Board of Supervisors is proud to mark the countyls l75th birthday by providing a museum that will play a key role in preserving the countyls history and in promoting tourism.
