A t re ‘ 4 y r JACKSON-GEORGE REGIONAL LIBRARY 3214 Pascagoula Street Pascagoula, MS 39567 The 1971 edition of THE HORNET presents a view of life and progress at East Central High School: The Hornet consists of a cross section of classes, administration, athletics, organizations, also a part of campus activities, beauty, and students with their own personal- ities enjoying the present to the fullest and looking forward to the future with confidence. Mallette, Superintendent of Education Jackson County Schools Prin cipal’s Wie essage Today, education has taken on greater importance than ever before during the history of mankind. In order for young men and women to take their rightful place in our society and be a productive individual they must possess highly developed skills or abilities in order to secure gainful employment. This does not mean that every person should attend college and receive a liberal arts degree. In our highly technological society a great percentage of the people must possess high technical and semi-technical skills that will enable us to produce and maintain the compli- cated machines and equipment that we must have. Therefore education is no longer important, It is imperative. a Assistant Pr. incipal Clementary Principal MR. CURTIS BURRELL MR, M. D. WILLIAMS G uidan ce Director 6) Vhice JS ecrelary MR, L, R. Her escort was Donis Pierce. Debbie is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Kennedy of Three Rivers. Debbie is Band Captain and has been active in the Student Council through- out her high school years, In the local Jr. Miss Pageant she won recognition for the school by placing in the finalists. Debbie has served East Cen- tral well and her fellow Students endow her with the honor of reigning as 1970-71 Homecoming Queen, Debbie's court consisted of one senior maid, Jayne Johnson, her escort was Darryll Strickler. Jayne is the daughter of Mr. Rhett Johnson of Hurley. Jayne has shown her school spirit by participating in basket- ball and track all four years of high school. As a senior, Jayne served as cheerleader and class secretary. As junior maid the students chose Lynn Harris, Halsey Cumbest escorted Lynn down the field. Lynn is the daugh- ter of Mr. and Mrs. William Harris of Big Point. Lynn is a cheerleader, runs track, and plays basketball. Miss Peggy Raines was chosen by her class as sopho- More maid. She was escorted by Richard Dearman, Peggy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Raines of Hurley. Peggy was chosen Silliest Sophomore and Wittiest in the 1970-71 Who's Who Election. Peggy also served as cheer leader this year, As freshman maid, Dar lene Goff, was elected. Her escort was Bobby Furby. Dar lene is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Bobby Goff of Hurley. Although Darlene is just com- ing into high school, she has already won honors and res- pect among her fellow students. Throughout Jr. High, Darlene helped cheer the mighty team to victory. Her freshman class voted her class favorite. After the ceremonial crowning and presentation of the court, the mighty Hornets came onto the field with a rush of enthusiasm. And as the game progressed the score= board showed the Hornets victorious over Baker. en ee EET Ee oe Ss 7 Wy ae aT CON; vv WNo So oh 6 fee: CHEERLEADERS Dumbbells 24 o | oO G al Bae ot as) Organizations “Before we put down our bets on a revolution- ary movement, we have a right to ask that it, like ours, have the broad goals of freedom and human welfare clearly before it .. . The first year that Mr. Gisbert accompanied the band to State Contest, the band received a total of all fours, which is a very low rating. But after two years of hard practice the band received a total overall rating of a two in 1970, which is a high rating. In 1970, the band received its second award from the State - a plac- que.
