Yesterday a happy face, today saddened, tomorrow a tearful but eager face meets the world with meek anticipations. Foreword We Dedicate the 1968 Hornet to... Mrs. Wilma Lowry .) In return for the priceless gifts of knowledge and inspiration she has be- stowed upon us, It is our way of ex- pressing our gratitude and our sincere appreciation for all that she has done as a teacher for the past eight years since the founding of East Central High School, Ce] - MARLAND H. MALLETTE: M. H. MALLETTE County Supt. of Education BILLY M, COLEMAN County Transportation Supervisor Jackson County Board of Education — Mr. Mallette’s Address Education is a necessity, The harsh fact is that there is little room left in a booming America for the school dropout. He faces a lifetime of dull, low paying jobs - or no jobs at all, You can very easily restrict your view to selfish interests, immediate pleasure and profit. But such people never have a place in the halls of fame or become examples to follow, Don’t confine your efforts to the minimum, Don’t let your interests stop with your own class or group. Don’t be content to stay where others stay just because it is popular, Don’t cramp your mind just because others do. The school is one of several institutions that has as its basic purpose preparing young people to be productive citizens inthe community, state, nation, and even in the world in which they live, The extent to which you are prepared to assume this tremendous responsibility depends entirely upon you, The ingredients of success are pretty much the same for everyone - basic knowledge, ambition, determination, and work. Forthe students who develop these necessary characteristics, there are no limits to what they can do. VERVON YATES MR. CURTIS BURRELL Assistant Principal MRS. ALICE LONG Secretary MR. M. D. T. A. this school year. In an effort to raise money, the P. T. A. worked hard and long to present the Spring Festival, which became a community and class drive. Each class in the school spon- sored a carnival booth, the ladies of the P. T. A. served a spaghetti supper, and a coronation cere- mony and talent program climaxed the Festival's activities. Once again the East Central P. T. A. has come through with determined and admirable effort with a tremendously successful project for the benefit of the school. Amid a scene of red roses, the class flower, Mr. Yates’ strong voice rang out in the night, as he called the class roll and in so doing marked the reaching of a goal toward which seniors had incessantly moved for the past twelve years. Dr. Aubrey Lucas, of the University of Southern Mississippi, was the distinguished guest speaker, and his words, along with those of each of the night's speakers, while honoring past achievements, went a step further in opening our minds to the world of future achievements. As the coveted diplomas found their places in the hands of the Graduates of 1968, thoughts were drawn to the alma mater - to the sprawling institution a hundred yards away whose beloved walls seemed to echo the words of Winston Churchill: This is not the end. With the cry of Go, Go, Go! the Homets were on their way to the best year in the history of the school. It started in the early fall when 1200 students realized that there was a new administration, a new atmosphere, and a new spirit at East Central High. It was felt in the classroom, in the halls, in the cafeteria, in the audito« rium by students, faculty, custodians, and even visitors. This new spirit gained momentum as a team that was all go won the PRC Championship. It sped through basketball season and on into the spring with 3 districts and a South Miss. championship, and was climaxed by the graduation of the Class of 1968. How did it happen? Where did the enthusiasm and energy come from? No one really knows. All of a sudden it was there as the Hornets raised their hands in the traditional V for victory and began to shout spon- taneously, Go, Go, Go! And go they did. Suddenly East Central High School Was one spirit moving toward one goal. Never Let It Die. RAAROAS ORpANe pp oy Ae AS an Si ele ae Jan Bearden Jan Bearden, aside from maintaining a high grade average, has spent much of her four years at ECHS in the service of her school. A participant in all girls’ athletics, Jan has become known for her drive, friendliness, and love for East Central High School. The 1968 Miss ECHS is outstanding not because of any efforts on her part to gain praise, but because of her humble and genuine dedica- tion and love for her school and her peers. Gary Jones In a year of superlatives, it is a rare individ- ual who can so distinguish himself in the ser- vice of his school that he wins the singular honor of Mr. East Central High School. Gary Jones is such a person. Besides accumulating an extraordinary record in athletics during his four years in high school, Gary has made a name for himself as one of the most de- pendable, dedicated, and enthusiastic of students. Elected by the student body, the 1968 Mr. ECHS is a true example of the ideal Homet citizen. t ‘ fe IK oe 7 Le. Under the direction of Mrs. Lowry and Coach Shirley, the Council has served as the link between the students and the school administration, helping to see that the wishes of the student body are answered, and that their ideas of stu- dent government are brought forward. In addition, the student council has organized and sponsored such important school events as Home- coming and the Carnival Ball, and has been responsible for all student elections. The Hornet Staff The industrious people who provide the essential drive and capable management for this year's annual are the self-sacrificing editors and managers of the var- ious staffs. These people, with the aid of the staff members and supervisors, are able to produce a year- book that is yet to be matched in quality and organ- ization. Ronald, Ginger, Kirk, Gary, and Robin. The school is indebted to Allen for his unselfish and dependable service. fesse ee i Shown in some of the many tasks of staff mem- bers are Diane, Sonny, Jan, Dwight, Mary, and Pat. William, Royce, Pat, Dwight, and Mary. Reba Diamond, Editor, types a revised draft. gX Newspaper Staff The staff of ECHOES of EC is to be complimented, if for nothing else, for the fact that their newspaper lasted an entire school year, as for- mer papers have failed to do. The ECHOES staff, though totally in- experienced, provided accurate and prompt coverage of school activ- ities. An especially sports-minded publication, ECHOES of EC sup- ported athletics and gave the ECHS teams credit for a job well done. What ECHOES lacked in polish and formality was made up for by its enthusiasm and genuine school spirit. — Z Q = o fe) 0) F [2 =) = nn THE NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR BOYS Li a =) - —_ — Y a ru) q 7 The Library Club, under the direction of librar- ian Mrs. Baria, plays a vital role in the daily curriculum at East Central. Members of the li- brary club, aside from their duties of checking books in and out, are always cheerfully willing to aid in students’ use of the library. Their ef- forts, along with the dedicated and unceasing work of Mrs. Baria, have done much to make the EC high school library the vital educational store- house that it is. The Power of Positive Thinking (Will some- one kindly tell me how this got on the Li- brary Club page?) The E-Club of East Central High School is the organization for varsity athletes who have earned a letter in Football, Basketball, Track, or Baseball. The objects of this prestige club are to foster among the school an interest in athletics at the school, to en- courage a more wholesome school spirit and to promote both physical and moral well being among the students. This year a total of 13 trophies were won by E.C. athletes. Six of these were PRC Championship. For the 1st time in E.C. History, a Football Championship was won. And for the 3rd time the Jr. Hi reigned as Champs. The track teams of E.C. ruled again at the Conference Meet. Both Boys and Girls came home Champions. The Boys successfully defended their Crown for the 3rd year in a row. The Girls remained on top for the 2nd year consecutively. Another 1st in E.C. Sports History was the winning of the Baseball Championship. Other trophies won by E.C. were: Girls Basketball, Leakesville Inv. Tourn. and Dist. 8-A Runner-Up; Track, Jackson Daily News Relay Cup, Dist. 8-A Boys and Girls, their 2nd and 3rd respectively in as many years; Baseball, Dist. 8-A South Half, Dist. 8-A, South Miss.
