Eastside Spirit ls Sustained For Sixty Years continued from p. 1 a rural setting at what is now Admiral Place and Garnett, the first East Central building was completed in 1927, riding the crest of an uneasy current into the depression days ahead. The land that it sits on was sold to the school board for 351 by Garnett farmer, L.O. Cremin, with the stipulation that the land was to always be used for a school or he or his heirs would reclaim their ownershi Mr. A.F. Hyden, newly designated superintendent and first principal, and his community supporters had organized the school against the advice of the state superintendent of schools, because local high school students were having to com- mute as far as Central High School, then in downtown Tulsa, to complete their secondary education. Our school's first name was indeed Central High School, but school board member Mr. Claude White along with Mr. Lloyd Grove and Mrs. Edna Horn suggested that they change the name to East Central, to avoid mix-ups in the fu- ture with the Central High School down- town. Up over the front doors, bricks were knocked out above the name Cen- tral and a limestone block with the word East was inserted. With a teaching staff of three and approximately 65 students, the first building contained 12 classrooms and one small auditorium, part of School continued on p. 5 p, Although seniors looked at thmgs Ill -W i different Ways, they still stood by each other. fabove right! East Central Celebrates Sixty Years of Learning Sixty years of contributions on the part of administrators, faculty and stu- dents of East Central High Shool cannot be tabulated by the use of mere numbers. Their contributions to Tulsa's eastside, the city and state are so far reaching in a continuingly positive spectrum of learning, leadership and community spirit, that to attempt to View those con- tributions separately from all others is impossible. Entertwined like a time worn ivy stalk and an old stone wall dating back to the days when Garnett, Oklahoma peacefully rested here before statehood, East Central's traditions of excellence in developing its youth permeates the fab- ric of the community. Our school holds the compound dis- tinction of being one of the oldest and yet most modern and progressive in the met- ropolitan Tulsa area. East Central's his- tory has reflected the changing times and lifestyles of the past six decades. Steeped in tradition, our school is still adopting new ones to fit new occasions, as its stu- dent body and faculty strive for an iden- tity which is essentially East Central. Its history combines unique in- fluences: the country-rural origin, the transition into the Tulsa system, a one- time status as the most modern of Tul- sa's high schools and now a cornerstone which has and will supply more, well-ed- ucated citizens to the area. In the beginning, eastside Tulsans felt the need for a new high school. With continued on p. 2 Faculty members, left to right, Mr. O.D, Bell, re- tiredg Mrs. Jan Armstrong, English instructor and Mr. Eddie Dyer, athletic director, all remember well teaching in the old East Central building. Along With Dr, James Darland, principal, they helped the Cardinal yearbook staff commemorate East Centralis sixtieth anniversary by posing in front of the now painted Hred brick school house with Mr. Gerald Harmon 3 classic car.
