However, the Cardinals enjoy being Watched for they have great pride and purpose in their Hights toward achievement and a better life. Let's see what we watched in 1984. 0pcningf5 After 12 years of hard work, seniors were Hnally at the top. Claiming success after graduation was a senior's most important goal. Whether it be college or going straight to work, there would be many things to look forward to in their life. Realizing after graduation many seniors would have to leave some friends behind, they pulled closer than ever. Senior highlights this year included: the prom, thespians, senior tea, and of course graduation which took place on May 23, 1984 at the O.R.U. Mabee Center. Coming towards the end of the year, a senior had a great deal of mixed emotions, some of these being excited, frightened, nervous, and sad. Though they will be leaving E.C., the friends, new and old, the happy times along with sad times will remain in their hearts as wonderful memories marking the claims they staked! 6fSeniors Seniors' Q5 5 ywu stake Q 6 W - 66675 JILL ABBOTT TODD ADAMS MIKE ADDINGTDN TERESA ASHMORE RACHEL BAIL KIM BAILEY STEVE BARDIN DENNIS BARNES HJDIE BARNES I i Mrrzl BEAMS TRICIA BEATY KEVIN BELL 8fScniors SUZANNE BIACK ROOSEVELT BLACKBURN MIKE BLUE MIKE ALDERSON JULIE ANDERSON LAREE ANDREWS ANDREA BAKER CHRIS BALDRIDGE DANIELLE BALLETFO DARLA BARROW KIM BARTELS BRINDI BARTLETT LISA BERKLEY MIKE BEYMER JIMMY BJORKMAN TANYA BOLLINGER EDITH BOLTON STEVE BOUCHER LAWANDA BOWEN MARK BOYD ANGIE BRACKETI' BARBARA BRITI' TERRI BROCK DENISE BROWN EDDIE BROWN S YL VIA BROWN TAB BROWN CONNIE BRUMMETI' SHER YL BR YAN T DEBBIE BUTLER , ROBBY BURNETTE TAMM Y BUTLER JARREIT CANTRELL BRENDA CASILLAS LINDA CASILLAS LESLE Y CASS DILSMOND CERVANTES STEPHANIE CHAMBERS EVA CHANEY ROBERT CHAPIN VI HUNG CHAU KEVIN CHERRINGTUN WHIT CHILDRESS DEBBIE CHRISTIAN ROCHELL CHRISTIAN JAY CLAPP LAURA CLAPP BRIAN CLARK Seniorsf9 N STEVE CLAUNCH SCOTT CLEMENS TONI COLLIER LEI CONSTANTINO KELVIN COSSEY LISA COUCH GINA COWAN SUSAN COWAN ROBERT COWDRE Y PHILLIP CRABTREE DEBBIE CRA VEN CHRIS CRA WSHA W ROBERT CROWE DESHA WN DAKE TROY DALLENBACH ANI TA DANIELS DEBI DA VENPORT JULIE DA VIS E ROCHELLE DA VIS TON YA DA VIS CHUCK DENT ON CHERI DOUGLAS DA VID DOUTHHT BOB DRISCOLL I 0fSeniors ,ff CAROL DUHART TINA DUNBAR JEFF DUVALL KIM EBERSOLE SHARLA EDDINGTON JOE EDWARDS LEESA EDWARDS SHELLY EICK STEVE ELKINS LAURA ENOS SCOTT ERICHSEN DA VID EVANS W , 1 ,O i STACY EVANS SCOTT FIEHLER RANDY FLAIT APRIL FORD DANIEL FORD HENRY FORST MIKE FORTNEY ROBERT FOSTER SAM FREEMAN JOSE GARCIA BRAD GAROUTTE JEANA GARRETI' STEVE GATES KIM GIBSON ALLISON GRAHAM NOBLE GRANT RICHARD GRAYSON BRETT GREGORY KIM GRIFFIN SUZETTE GRILLOT JEFF HAILEY CHRIS HALCOMB LANNETTE HALL MICHELLE HALSTEAD N Scniorsfl I Hanging out together . . . Whether attending meetings, selling T-shirts, or beginning promotions for a fund raiser, all of the Cardinal clubs gave someone a place where they could belong. From the beginning of the year, all the club sponsors and their presidents called upon their club members to help the club be more spirited and more distinctive than the other clubs here at East Central. Pep Club was the first to show their spirit. When East Central students arrived the first day of school, they were welcomed by the E. C. O.P., one of the most original shirt ideas of the year. DECA club was next to show school spirit and pride, by selling the KMOD Rocks East Central t-shirts for the second year. The past year has been a good one for expressing a feeling of belonging, especially for the new freshmen and sophomores. 58fOga zati s Urganiza tions -vi: W-Q spy. J ' -wi Nxt, '?'.. Although the sophomores are new to East Central they are no longer considered ba by cardinals . The freshmen class has now adopted this name. The sophomores this year had a class under them watching every move they made. As the year went on the sophomores found their place in the school by selling recipe books and spices which were also sold by the other three classes. Some other activities that went over well were the selling of lollipops and the freshman-sophomore class play called The Warrior's Husband. The soph- omores also worked the concession stands at all wrestling matches. All the money that was earned this year will go towards their senior prom. Every move made by the sophomores this year was a move toward maturity as they proved themselves to be true cardinals. SportsfI2 7 The class of 87 had a lot of bonds to break this year in order to adjust to highschool life. From the very Hrst day up to the last, they worked hard to Ht in, and they made it. This was the Hrst year for Freshmen to attend East Central, and even though it seemed as if they were being watched by the upperclassmen, they soon realized it was because the elders were just looking out for the baby birds. They had a Very close class this year because it was a big step forward for all of them, There were many activities especially planned for them such as soc-hops, pep rallies, and parties. A lot of growing up was done during the year of 1984 and a lot of new and exciting friendships were made. It was a year to learn and change with the usual ups and downs. Mrs. Sands was born in a small rural town of Clayton, Okiahoma. She received all of her elementary and secondary education in the local schools until May 1943. Three days later she enrolled at Southeastern State College in Durant, Oklahoma, Mrs. Sands in- terrupted her college education with just 54 credit hours behind her. War broke out in Europe and her only brother became an instructor for Boeing Air Craft. Feeling the need to get out and see the world, Mrs, Sands went to Seattle, Washington and worked in a factory burring airplane ribbs. During that same year, she was contacted by her school superintendent at Clayton. He posed a question which would affect the rest of her hte. She was asked to return as a teacher to her elementary alma mater. Mrs. Sands accepted the job. She taught elementary school through 1945, and she became the Pushmataha County school lunch supervisor. Four years later, someone unexpected appeared in her life. George, a childhood sweetheart, returned to propose to his Valdene. George and Valdene Sands married on June 10, 1947. In 1948 their first child was born and named Wiliam Myron L Valdene began teaching at Battles, a small town outside of VWlburton, Oklahoma. George helped the school s track team win first place in Latimer Court. When Limestone schools heard about Georges coaching talents, they hired both of the Sands and gave them an increase of thirty dollars a month. They accepted the offer. While at Limestone, the Sands worked on their degrees at Southeastern State College, until they began teaching science and business at Clayton, the Sands hometown. Mary Bess was born during the ehght years that the Sands taught in Clayton. In 1958, the Sands moved to Tulsa. Valdene was assigned to Central High SchooL and George to Wilson Jr. High. Immediately thereatten Valdene was asked to be assistant sponsor of the Red Feathers . There were seven sponsors who devoted their time, and received no reimbursement. After Mrs. Sands had served as assistant sponsor for two years, she was promoted to head sponsor ofthe pep cluhfcheerleadmg team, In 1964, she became Senior Class Sponsor at Central: she reluctantly accepted it because of the love she felt for Red Feathers. In 1970, Mrs. Sands rooted herself into the foundations of East Centralg she requested a transfer to East Central, as Mr. James Payne, principal, had been both George and 'Valdenels ninth grade science teacher. That same year she became the student council sponsor, and has remained so every year since. I've tried to make this the best school in Tulsag which it is, remarked Mrs. Sands. Sands has served as vice president, and secretary of TCTA, and served as representative of Tulsa Teachers Immediate Assistance Club for East Central. The future holds many activities for the youthful Mrs. Sands. She plans on fishing, traveling, and hopes to master the skill of golfing. Square dancing, a lifetime hobby of the Sands will be continued throughout their retired life. Sands plans on working harder for her husband and wants to be a better mother for her children, children-in-ia w, grandchildren, and also her puppy, Annie. She believes that this will keep George and her off the streets. I love-East Central and I hope that I have shown it.
