The Cardinal FLICIYS 81 FLASHIBACIKS AT TI-llf MUVIES East Central High School Tulsa, Qklahoma Volume ll, l977 The Last Hurrah Do you remember? Cheers intent on winning A roaring stadium full of anticipation Overwhelming enthusiasm Banners hopeful of a victory A moment that was never forgotten. Cardinal courage, a deep devotion To that good ole Red and White. Security of people's voices, l heard them every day A feeling of assurance had always come my way Our special group, our get togethers, my friends and all the gang ln many words it can be said, how this year was a bang. But most of all as we know the times that had most meaning Was during Fortune's greatest hour as on a friend we're leaning. A gust of wind finds its way to a fallen leaf, lying purposefully in its path For it has a destiny, that small. seemingly insignificant piece of foliage does have a purpose. The weathered parchment has waited patiently for this moment. ' Like us it is given wings, airborne in the presence of a fresh new awareness of life. Born Free :T-f Bless The Beasts And The Children ' is F9 154, School isn't just in the classrooms. Think of all the other things to do . . Sign the sheet. Join the clubs. Get invited and meet after school. Spirit ribbons - 25 cents, F.H.A. makes for better future mothers. All those big red balloons the Pep Clubbers blew up, Witches . . . Can Can girls . . .even Dracula showed up at the French Club Halloween party. Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams To dream new dreams To fulfill long cherished ones, Choosing our own path Down Iife's way Life's frontier-ours to explore. M.. --and Somehow all the juniors and seniors know you're a sophomore, like the time you fell going up the stairs, the word sophomore rang through the halls immediately. But along with the not-so-good times, there are some wonderful times: the first football game, and the sense of belonging. You're just one voice in a crowd of cheers, but you are an individual...This year in high school, you've matured greatly, but that little bit of sophomore will re- main inside you forever. - Terry Beach- l'm really going to miss not being a sophomore next year. This year everything seems so bright and new, and l'm afraid that the brightness and newness of it all will tarnish and then what fun would it be? - Nancy Warburton- lt always seems that sophomores get caught more easily than juniors or seniors: like leaving class early or riding the elevator without a pass, but I guess that's because they've had more experience. - Jill Hodges- Class Cf 979 Sophomores may be green, but nature's first green is golden...God, grant me the serenity to accept those things l cannot change. - Kelly Peterson- lt's almost a disappointment when being chased by seniors through the halls, being thrown into the girls' bathroom, and things like that don't really happen. - Roger Tucker- Just making new friends and seeing new faces outweighs any dis- advantages in the sophomore year...l haven't found many disad- vantages, but with all that talk of being a sophomore, there must be something lurking around the corner. - Stan Goodchild- Juniors and seniors think they're real neat trying to sell us llttle innocent sophomores elevator keys that don't work...we're defenseless against the juniors and seniors! - Kelly Calhoun- When it's time for assemblies the sophomores are the last to be dismissed and when lunch time comes around, who's got permission to leave? Well, not the sophomores, they have to eat army foodl -Kay Arkison- Since I've come to East Central, most of the seniors have been really nice to me. Many juniors have tool...l think the juniors and seniors of E. C. are what makes this school so great. -Randy Clay- This year was a lucky one for me. I didn't meet any of the older guys who had spray cans up their sleeves or a bush especially reserved with my name on it...sometimes you'Il be trying to hurry to class because you are almost late. All of a sudden, someone sticks their feet out and trips you, causing a commotion. The halls are so crowded you wouldn't even know who-dunnit...I guess it's nice to be a sophomore, but I sure would be a whole lot more comfortable if I were a junior right now. -Ron Bender- I sure like senior high better than junior high because it is so different. Well, I guess the juniors and seniors are used to it by now, and that's why they act like they know it all. -Marilyn Martin- The work involved in your sophomore year makes ninth grade look like kindergarten work. -Robin Perkins I'm not prejudiced, but I think our class is the best yet, and I'm sure we will prove ourselves. -Ellen Young- All School Wrap-Llp -J. Zenke brightened the horizon of Tulsa education this year when he was appointed Superintendent of Schools and began his administrative duties on October 4. An impressive array of school experiences accompanied the new superintendent: those of classroom teacher, principal, administrative intern, and Director of Elementary Education. Working with a seven member Board of Education, Dr. Zenke faced such problems as school financing, enrollment and boundaries, curriculum, maintenance: all phases pertaining to TuIsa's IO4 schools in the system. Payne, the Director Lights, Camera, Action - These three words have probably been called out in the film studios in the production of millions of feet of celluoid pictures that have recorded for future generations the plays, books, news events and dreams of our times. These same three words might be a guideline that we might apply to our everyday life of now and the future. As this I977 yearbook has utilized the principle of the camera to record the highlights and events of this past school year, I am sure that each of you will search through its pages to find events that were important to you this year and will be pleased to find your picture or name left imprinted on its pages for future generations. l trust that the enlightenment that you have received in your training and educational pursuits will fulfill your needs and equip you to reach your life goals and that in these coming years, you will have the pleasure of seeing your skills converted into action so that your life and the lives of your loved ones and our great nation will be better served because of the training, teachings and activities captured in this yearbook that you may open it in later years and recall your mental Flicks and Flashbacks of your years at East Central High School. Strolling the halls in a good 'ole mood, Mr. Payne and Mr. Smith pause for the camera. Assistant Principals George Dorsch Since we're on our way to being one of the biggest schools in town. we added another Assistant Principal this year, Mr. Bill Stephens, in charge of Attendance and Supervision. And it's pretty hard to put one over on him. Mr. Stephens has been a Cardinal for I3 years, starting I964 as History teacher, basketball and baseball coach. Chalk him up with two basketball conference championships. Then he became a counselor and his strategy changed from That's not right, Refi to Why aren't vou in class! Now he's a principal and he knows why you're not in class. That's you in your total environment: planning your future, choosing your career, establishing your family, balancing your budget in this day and age. A new teacher, Gloria Clifton, and new courses, Parenting and Consumer Economics, helped bring it all about. There were various ways and means: field trips to observe nurseries, banks, shopping centers, furniture and grocery stores. Their job is to teach the rest of us to like it, or at least know how to do it. Mr. McCray is the head of this department, where some students rack their brains finding solutions to problems that are a page long. And why do they go to all this work? That is a question that has been asked time and time again. Here are some of the answers: logical reasoning, know-how to balance your bank account, figure out your income tax, even put a man on Mars someday! FCA We all had fun this year. Christmas caroling in the winter weather, and especially at the Christmas party afterwards. Taking candy to the children at the Children's Medical Center and having a hayride were just a few things that we have done during the year. Maybe the tuffest thing was trying to find a sponsor for our FCA group. We have had a lot of guidance this year from a number of sponsors. One of our sponsors is Coach Dan Crookham. Although he left teaching at East Central last year, he came back every week from Locust Grove to sponsor us. The pep club, together with its officers and the cheerleaders were able to keep the spirit at E.C. at its peak by doing such activities as baking cookies for the players, filling stockings for the wrestlers, and having a breakfast for the basketballers: not to mention the many signs and posters plastered all over the walls for a little extra touch. Carmel apples, relays, and obstacle courses made the pep assemblies real sweet although they did have their bitter moments when one carmel apple turned out to be an onion. His accomplishments will be felt at East Central for years to come. We will remember him and miss him. To Mrs. Lloyd we say farewell. Her 20 years of hard, dedicated work and her willingness to help others has encouraged students to find and reach their goals. And now we take time to say' all our thank-you's to: Ms. Armstrong, the lady behind it all pushing us to reach our deadlines. Kelly Lawrence, in charge of Organizations: without her hard work, there would be a lot of empty pages in the book. Jeff Lurch Forrester, head of Sports: his efforts and ideas made the sport pages what they are. To Lea Ann Parks, her constant worrying got the Opening section out on time and beautifully. To Mark Bowers and Paul Carter, their writing was sensational. To Gail Vickers. our typist. She kept cool while everyone else was frantic. To Monnie Webb, her secton was one of the most creative yet. To Terry Waker and Leslie Hunt, the Senior section turned out to be well worth the headaches. To our photographers, Mark Shelby, Mike Sparr, and Lisa Freire, we had them running all year long. To the Juniors, Mike Moose, Terri Marrs, Jeannette Blosch, Barbara Young, Vicki Shepherd, Tanya Roberson and Elaine Paul, who ran the errands, typed and counted copy and scheduled pictures, we leave next year to you. To Bob Welch, our representative, who was always there when we needed him, aspecial thanks.
