East Central junior College evolved' in 1928 from the Newton County Agricultural High Schoolwhich had served the community since 1914. Beginning with three buildings used by the Newton County Agricultural High School fadministration building and boys dormitory pictured at lefty, the plant has expanded as needs arose and funds were avail- able, until it now includes forty-eight buildings, twelve of which are faculty residences. 1929 was the year it was fully decided that East Central would become a permanent junior college. There was two teachers, Mrs. W. W. Newsome taught English, History and Spanish and Mr. Robert Marshall taught Chemistry and Mathematics. There was an enrollment oftwenty and classes were held in the basement of the girl's dormitory. East Central junior College now owns atotal of 199 acres ofland located in and adjoining the town of Decatur. The campus proper is composed of approximately thirty-two acres.
