East Central junior College evolved' in 1928 from the Newton County Agricultural High Schoolwhich had served the community since 1914. Beginning with three buildings used by the Newton County Agricultural High School fadministration building and boys dormitory pictured at lefty, the plant has expanded as needs arose and funds were avail- able, until it now includes forty-eight buildings, twelve of which are faculty residences. 1929 was the year it was fully decided that East Central would become a permanent junior college. There was two teachers, Mrs. W. W. Newsome taught English, History and Spanish and Mr. Robert Marshall taught Chemistry and Mathematics. There was an enrollment oftwenty and classes were held in the basement of the girl's dormitory. T' ll I By 1930 the college had added dormitories, a gymnasium and a Home Economics and Science building. Mr. R.C. Pugh was the first President of the Institution. S-ince the school was co-educational, certain restrictions were imposed between the boys and girls. It was not deemed wise, however, to separate them entirely. They took their meals together and recited together, and at frequent intervals on Satuday and Sunday afternoons, the boys came to the girl's dormitory for an hour or two. There was an outdoor bell to call students to classes. COnce some prankster tied the tail of a cow to the rope of the bell and it rang for two hours .J Originally this institution was supported by three counties--Newton, Neshoba, and Scott. Later these were joined by Leake and Winston. More than thirty different major buildings with approximately 552, 000, 000 have been added to the three original buildings . The people of the area had at last realized the value of a college and were support- ing it wholeheartedly as they have done to the present day. 2 i
