Or dates may represent exciting peaks of history and experience that stimulate over and over memories of thrilling moments that man and nations love to recall and to celebrate. The date of 1928 was only the prelude of many such memories in the minds of numerous individuals in the East Central area of the state of Mississippi. In that year East Central junior College opened doors to experiences that would become golden opportunities to high school graduates in the five counties of Leake, Neshoba, Newton, Scott and Winston. To every high school in that area soon began to come echoes of college honors won of victories in exciting athletic contests for which gleaming trophies were awarded, and often dramatics and musical productions featured names of local boys and girls who had discovered talents that no one, not even themselves, had dreamed they possessed. We pay tribute to the far- sighted founders of this institution who had the vision to see what a community college such as this could mean to youth. We honor those East Central graduates who, through the years, in the state and nation, have, by their achievements, built up extended esteem for the Alma Mata that the Wo-He-Lo of 1964 delights to extol. T' ll I By 1930 the college had added dormitories, a gymnasium and a Home Economics and Science building. Mr. R.C. Pugh was the first President of the Institution. S-ince the school was co-educational, certain restrictions were imposed between the boys and girls. It was not deemed wise, however, to separate them entirely. They took their meals together and recited together, and at frequent intervals on Satuday and Sunday afternoons, the boys came to the girl's dormitory for an hour or two. There was an outdoor bell to call students to classes. COnce some prankster tied the tail of a cow to the rope of the bell and it rang for two hours .J Originally this institution was supported by three counties--Newton, Neshoba, and Scott. Later these were joined by Leake and Winston. More than thirty different major buildings with approximately 552, 000, 000 have been added to the three original buildings . The people of the area had at last realized the value of a college and were support- ing it wholeheartedly as they have done to the present day. 2 i East Central junior College evolved' in 1928 from the Newton County Agricultural High Schoolwhich had served the community since 1914. Beginning with three buildings used by the Newton County Agricultural High School fadministration building and boys dormitory pictured at lefty, the plant has expanded as needs arose and funds were avail- able, until it now includes forty-eight buildings, twelve of which are faculty residences. 1929 was the year it was fully decided that East Central would become a permanent junior college. There was two teachers, Mrs. W. W. Newsome taught English, History and Spanish and Mr. Robert Marshall taught Chemistry and Mathematics. There was an enrollment oftwenty and classes were held in the basement of the girl's dormitory. East Central junior College now owns atotal of 199 acres ofland located in and adjoining the town of Decatur. The campus proper is composed of approximately thirty-two acres. The enrollment had reached overthe five hundred mark, and the number of teachers has increased to the present total of thirty-eight. .Q , if 'lui how, -A..-gi-- 41 - -..ll 1. J. On the East Central campus two ladies have been for many years vitally concerned with two imp.ortant areas of daily living. As Dean of Women and College Dietitian, their attention to their duties, their undeviating concentration on their responsibility and their warm friendliness have made them indispensable to the college community. It is therefore out of sincere gratitude for their dedication, their efficiency and their concern for the Welfare of students that the yearbook staff dedicate to Miss Erma Lee Barber and Mrs. Louella Gordon the 1964 edition of the Wo-He-Lo. 1... tamif- ffl 1 Q .- VVVV W w.MV ?' ,J Ax' .Q .4 ' at mi. , v, ,, A if , 7 ff Q V o 476 ' za'-Naifif , 9 5 'W -f .M.Mx.,ffa7f ,s -., X N 5 , 5 V . 4 'S M., .,,.., m,,,yf4 r , Y V -,,,,, , , , ka, .pg N 1 ,f ,as WL V is 1 '1 ,E , .Nl A 'Wu - S ' E .5 , V. ,, , ,M 4 .,4. im, Q , ,f Q , Q W, 5 QI, 4 'PN .5 'J Hz V 'jf , ,M do E rg ' 4 Y Yr I A 'f , J V f api ,al 'm 5 44 Y ,, K 4,115 Q 1 ,iff ,Q . The degree to which individual students demonstrate their assumption of their duty to be educated is recognized in all institutions of learning in the form of ratings in scholarship. Those who attain a rating that evidences superior achievement in the process of becom- ing educated are honored in various ways in the various institutions. Beginning with the current edition, students at East Central who have maintained a scholar- ship rating of 3. 75 or above in quality points earned will be honored by being specially fea- tured in the college yearbook. This year one co-ed, Miss Sylvia Lynn Blount, has merited this honor by maintaining a grade average of 3. 86. Miss Blount is a student in the Pre -Medical curriculum. -, .... . ,..,..,.,, C' . f - . Smyth, Charles Thomas-Louisville, Miss. Tadlock, Joe Lee-Morton, Miss. Thompson, Roy C. -Morton, Miss. Tideman, Lanelle Johnson-Philadelphia, M Q Wilson, Henry-Union, Miss. In 1936 Mrs. W. W. Newsome, English Instructor at East Central wrote a prophecy for East Central junior College. The poem was originally presented as a part of a pageant given to celebrate the 100th Centennial of Newton County. As the thirty-fifth session of East Central has opened, it is interesting to both students and patrons, the extent to which has been fulfilled the prophecy in the poem. I dipt into the future as far as human eye could see, Saw the vision of this school and all the wonder that would be, Saw the dreamers catch the vision--heard them sound the note of faith, Heard the echoes from the platform of the Legislative halls, Behold their names in bold relief written on the scroll of time. Then the builders caught the vision, county wide the message ran, Came support from every area of this junior college land, Newton first, Neshoba next, followed soon by Scott and Leake, Winston joined the band last, while students from the state at large--other states as well, Caught the spirit of this college and came here our ranks to swell. Again I dipt into the future far as human eye could see, Saw the campus filled with buildings, well equipped as all could be, For the service of the youths that for training here would come, Saw the farms under wise direction bringing forth a splendid yield, Saw the barns overflowing with produce from the fields, Saw the barnyard stocked with thorough-breds, some from islands across the seas, Saw the milk-pails overflowing, heard the barnyard's noisy din, Grunting pigs and cackling hens, Fruits and vegetables galore added to the bounteous store. Saw the classrooms filled with students that for training here had come. Saw the sacrifice of parents as they worked and toiled back home. That their boys and girls might profit from the college at their door. Saw the corps of faithful teachers chosen with discretion rare, To give their time and knowledge to the youths assembled here, Training Christian men and women, Tomorrow's citizens to be, Saw the faith of Dreamers and of Builders being realized in E.
