Ni' - gy. edlcbdldaa Occasionally in the course of life we meet a person whose influence is far reaching and whose character remains a living inspiration. Such a one is the woman whom we honor here. For twenty three years she has been librarian at East Central, going her way quietly, inconspicu- ously, and with a calm dignity that speaks of a true and gracious lady. A love of books, a sincere interest in those who seek knowledge, and an unwavering devotion to E, C. J. C. have been her life. Because of her unselfish spirit and years of devoted service, we, the staff, humbly and gratefully dedicate to Miss Ethel Burton this, the 1956 Wo-I-Ie-Lo. czcakcy and Handed This, the twenty-eighth year of service of East Central to the com- munity and state, seems at present one of the most noteworthy years in the institution's history. And, although the current enrollment is one of the largest, the most outstanding aspects of this year in the history of East Central Junior College may be revealed in other ways. It is my personal opinion that we shall never have a student body or faculty to excel those featured on these pages. The activities of the Wo-He-Lo and Tom-Tom staffs, the athletic teams, and other clubs, and such events as the Homecoming celebration have contributed much to this important year. The Alumni Association's adoption of a more active program in support of East Central promises to make both the students and the alumni a more significant factor in the life of the school. This year of 1955-56, as always, we will place foremost the friend- ships formed here. President 8 4. . l wr- E W 0, . .355 jr , 1 ,W 'U . W ., S' '.,,,,, .gp-.-f , hw Q. Laing, - Q, Pace is issuing the individual 'iaents which will bring in the tive and exciting articles to razed by eager students in the coming issue ofthe Tom-Tom. 'ih- E ,.......... 'miie' V O Joni Sue Hunter, Managing Editorg Harrell Pace, Editor in Chiefg Camelia Harvey, Associate Editorg and Billy Sharp, Associate Editor: concentrate diligently in planning the paper in their effort to make each issue of the Tom-'lim an original and interesting production. PRODUCTION OF TOM-TOM STAGED THROUGHOUT ITS WORK The publication of the Tom-Tom was begltm in November, l9Z5'Ender fhe leaders ip of Miss Una Harris, who is still the advisor for the publication which has developed from a four-page monthly paper to a bi-weekly eight-page edition Much work and effort, as well as several brain storms, go into each issue. On this page and the ones that follow is pictured the behind-the-scenes activity fboth physical and mentalj that goes into each stage of a single issue. The first sta e of production is the evolution of 8 ideas in the planning of the paper by the Executive Staff as they think up news scoops, produce original ideas for features and dream up un-heard of poses for the photographer to record in endless feet of film. At a full staff meeting, the reporters get a thorough understanding of the best sources for t eir news articles while the columnists and features writers are in- jected with the proper mixture of ideas for causing the brain bubbles to begin to boil. The reporter has approximately three days to interview individuals who will give him information to go into his article. The athletic reporter chases Coach Blount over the campus and stops him just long enough to get the details of coming sports events. The society reporter gathers the bigcgest gossips among the girls aroun her in Jackson Hall to get the latest on who has gone where and done what in the college social circles. Another society re- porter has as her special assignment the collection of social items on the faculty members--at least those which are released for publication to the stu- dents. Important news scoops for practically every issue are found in the policies, plans and activities of the administration. These the News Editor assumes the responsibility of preparing for publication. Feature Writers find themselves taking advantage of every spare mom- ent to think of something clever to go into a feature which will get many laughs and an occassional oh! or ah! from the readers An excitin event in Tom-Tom - 8 annuals is the last-minute race dffhe reporters to the Tom-Tom office to get their completed assignments into their individual cubby-holes by the deadline date so that they can be copyread and typed. There is the financial side of the publication which can ig not be overlooked. The advertising staff work together to think of clever ways to induce businessmen to give the Tom- Tom the privilege of helping them increase their business and incidently reduce the amount of red found on the Tom- Tom ledgers at the end of every year. Q15 Bennie Ellis, Business Manager, shows his assistants Gay Davidson and Charles Mims the art of selling advertisements. C21 The bound-to- be famous artists and cartoonists, Dwayne Warwick and Norman McKay, are busily drawing the sketches for the next issue. Those who do t1'1is phase of the work are: Sue Livingston, Anne Baker, Theressa Madden and Warren Crane. sf? . . 6 ,.-mai Something is always in every issue to add to the gllamor of the make-up and to catch and hold the wandering eye of the reader. Much of this is the responsibility of the p otographer. He does all the work in taking the pictures and pro- cessmg them, and he works late many nights in the photo laboratory to have the pictures developed to meet the press When the copy has been sent to press, there are a few days of rest for the greater ntunber of staff members as no one has any further responsibility for that particular issue except the executive sta f and the circulation staff. When the copy comes back from press and is ready to be cut and made into the dummy, the executive staff again exercise originality, and incidentally their patience, in placing the articles as they are to be in the finished publication. After this work is done, the executive staff can send the paper to press and relax, leaving the rest of the work to the circulation staff who distribute the papers on the campus and mail them to more than one-hundred individuals and schools. When this final stage is completed, with the paper in the hands ofthe readers, each member of the staff can feel proud of a job well done if the issue is good--, but ifit isn't, well-- it isn't hard to imagine a staffer's feeling under that circumstance and the reader who doesn't rub it in is appreciated. 11.4 ... aqui T ls sigfi 'N : .
