Dr. Jenkins serves cake to Mrs. Jenkins and four of his six children — James, Jeffrey Jack, Suzanne, Patricia, and Sallie Jean. Friday the 13th of May, 1960, was not an unlucky day in the life of Dr. Leo W. Jenkins who on that date was inaugurated as the sixth president of East Carolina College. Dr. Jenkins is a graduate of Rutgers University, B.S. degree; Columbia Univer- sity, M.A. Degree; New York University, Ed.D. Degree and has also done graduate work at Duke University. In his native state of New Jersey, Dr. Jenkins had served as assistant to the Commissioner for Higher Education in the New Jersey State Department of Educa- tion. Dr. Jenkins had a most commendable military service record serving as Major in the U. S. Marine Corps. In addition to being head of this institution, he is pres- ently serving as member in the Resei-ve of United States Information Agency, Atomic Energy Advisory Committee, President of the North Carolina Association of Academic Deans, and Delegate to the White House Conference on Education. Dr. Jenkins also holds honors, membership, and offices in some twenty-five other civic and educa- tional organizations. He is an author, orator, active church member, and a de- voted family man. A crowd of ten thousand witnessed the inaugural exercises, marked by academic tradition and colorful pagentry, on the campus of East Carolina College. Some two hundred robed officials included presidents, deans, and faculty members who repre- sented some thirty colleges and univer- sities throughout the nation. The proces- sional was led by the Governor of North Carolina, Luther Hodges.
