Prominent Educator enjoys working, playing tennis, fishing, playing with children, and occasionally playing the recorder. A native of Warrenton, North Carolina, he received his B. A. Degree from the University of North Carolina, M. A. from Emory University, and Doctorate from the University of North Carolina. He studied a summer each at Keyon School of Letters, Indiana University; and also in England. Before coming to East Carolina he taught at several prep schools, and for three years at Mississippi State Women ' s College. Dr. Poindexter served three years in the Navy as Communication ' s Officer. East Carolina has opened its doors to this fine man in the five years he has taught here. He is not only an advisor for the college annual and Circle K Club; but he is Secretary of Eastern North Carolina Scholarship Foundation, President of the College English Associa- tion of North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia, and a member of A. A. U. P. and Kiwanis Club. For giving us guidance, insight, courage, and under- standing, and for being our friend; we humbly and gratefully dedicate the 1956 BUCCANEER to Dr. James E. Poindexter. 6SZ

Jote i i wofi we aosze Achievement in the classroom adds spice to hours of relaxation, which are many and varied. Only when a student attains the greatest achievement in his studies are the hours of relaxation enjoyed and wel- comed to their fullest. Since the main objective of college is to heighten his scholastic standards and to aid him in choosing a vocation, the work of the class- room naturally precedes all other activities. Within his busy life the student finds few precious hours to call his ow n, but these hours are appreciated greatly when he knows that he deserves to have them. The opportunities to create for the student his social life and increase his extra-curricular activities, are numerous at East Carolina. Many moments of enjoy- ment and relaxation are taken advantage of by the student who visits the College Union. Here, after his studies have been completed, a collegian may find the atmosphere most pleasant and refreshing to his tired mind.
