I V EAST CAROLINA ... the name and title which means so much to all who have trod upon her grounds ... the name which acts as a pin point, pricking and probing into the corners of one ' s mental machinery and bringing back phases of reminiscence that are so characteristic of well-rounded campus life. The pattern set for days and nights on the East Carolina campus sifts into a recipe of contentment and happiness. Classes in Graham, Flanagan, and grand old Austin . . . gym in Wright Building . . . crowds around post office boxes between classes, blocking the entrance to the dining hall ... the scurrying and confusion around Cotten Hall on Sunday nights when women students return to check in after week-ends off campus . . . the original jargon of the Soda Shop ciowd . . . the solemnity of the library . . . the variety of names dubbed on the men ' s dorms . . . these thoughts and so many more equally pleasant ones return spontaneously whenever EAST CAROLINA is mentioned. (For faculty of Physical Education and Military, s ee respective sections.) f ememb We cannot forget our faculty ... we cannot forget the people who have liad so iiuuh to do with the direct- ing of our destinies . . . from all we have learned something. We laughed with them, we worked with them . . . we extolled their good points, we griped about their had ones ... we went to their classes some- times happy, sometimes sad . . . but we always learned something — something that might he useful too during our long journey on the hard road ahead of us. No, we cannot forget. C The Air ROTC unit at East Carolina, headed by Major Lomax L. May, Professor of Air Science and Tactics, is a detachment of the Fourteenth Air Force. Its strategic mission is the preparation, in the administrative and logistical aspects of air operations, of qualified young men for service in that branch of our nation ' s defense structure that is becoming increasingly instrumental in the seemingl y constant battle to preserve peace in the world — the United States Air Force. Since its activation in 1948 the unit has exprri?nced an enormous growth in enrollment. Beginning with only 76 members in September of 1948, it now boasts an en- rollment of 286 cadets, a number almost quadruple the initial enrollment figure. The curriculum is divided into a basic course and an advanced course. In certain cases, men with previous wartime military service are exempt from taking the basic course. Upon successful completion of the prescribed course or courses, and upon recommendation by the Professor of Air Science and Tactics, a cadet is commis- sioned as a second lieutenant in the I ' nited States Air Force Reserve. The Air ROTC unit is truly synonymous with East Carolina ' s expansion and progress, and its rapid growth in the face of impending hostilities is symbolic of the patriotic desire for .America to continue to reign supreme on the battlefield, on the high seas, and in the air. A new athletic era is dawning for the Buccaneers — the purple- and-gold clad legions who take to the field against East Carolina foes. That cry of Here come the Pirates! is giving new chills of fear to other North State conference clans, and to non-conference foes who meet the Buccos on fields of battle. Taking the course of this new trend toward greatness is the East Carolina gridiron aggregation. Since Coach William E. ( Bill I Dole stepped to the helm of the Pirate football machine in 1949. the calibre of football exhibited here has risen greatly. In ' 49, the Pirates won their first football game in two years. They went on to win four, tie one and lose five that year and ended the season tied for seventh place with High Point in the North State conference. The Bucs ' loop record was one win. one tie and four losses. This year ' s outfit, with the great Roger Thrift leading the way, improved greatly on that record. The 19.50 campaign ended with the Bucs sporting seven triumphs and only three n conference play while defeats, five of these victories bei two defeats were to loop foes By virtue of this 5-2 mark w ithin the conference. Coach Dole ' s Team charges ended the season in fourth place, just a half game behind third place Lenoir Rhyne. In fact, the Bears gained Appalachian third by playing one more conference game than the Bucs. j lo,i The whole upper bracket of the loop ran a close race for the . top spot. Thrift was named on the All-North State conference team and was elected co-captain of that mythical outfit. He was voted by coaches as the most valuable player in the con- ference. He won a berth on several All-State teams, and received honorable mention in Little All-America ratings. Roger set an unofficial conference passing record, tossing for 1.907 yards in the ten games the Pirates played. Twenty of his aerials went for touchdowns. He connected on 124 of 2.57 passes. This year was the second that Thrift made the All-Conference aggregation. Frank Maennle. rugged Pirate end. also won All-Conference honors. He. along with Dwight Shoe, another Buc flankman. snagged the majority of Thrift ' s passes. Maennle was one of the leading scorers in the conference. Shoe received honorable mention in the votes for the All-Conference squad, as did Don McKenzie, a standout lineman in Dole ' s defensive unit. The Bucs spanked the Newport News Apprentice School Eleven. 21-7. on the sailors ' gridiron to open the 19.50 season. Ground play featured this game, with Jack Britt, Tom Swain, Bill Darby and Jack Benzie exhibiting some fancy running. Frank Madigan, defensive Playing their second game away from home, the Piratemen won over Lenoir Rhyne by 27-19 at Hickory. Bill Smith inter- cepted a pass and streaked for a touchdown with the score stand- ing al 20-19 in the final period, to clinch the victory. Thrift gave his first real passing display as he completed 13 of 30 tosses for 235 yards. The defense was led by Boblay Hodges. Buck Hardee, Don McKenzie and Wally Robinson. Hampden-Sydney upset the locals in the first home jf the year. The Tigers, after trailing for three periods, punched over three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to gain a 38-26 triumph. The Pirates seemed to fall apart in that last period. Thrift ' s passing was again superb, however. The Bucs suffered their first conference loss to Elon by a 26-16 count on the Christians ' field. The game was played in Wally Robinson, defensive tackle Tom Swain, fullback Pete Proniinski and Miokev Bernian. Howard McAdams and Cecil Winslow. a slow mist of rain, but Thrift still connected on 21 of 48 aerials for 324 yards. Elon ' s powerful ground attack proved to be too much for the locals, however, as their defense weak- ened in the second half. The Doleman held a 10-7 lead at half- time, as Buck Hardee, Pirate extra point specialist, broke a 7-7 deadlock in the closi ng minutes of the second quarter by booting a field goal. East Carolina gave a Homecoming crowd of 7,000 a splendid display of football as the Bucs overwhelmed Western Carolina Teachers College. 36-6. Both the offensive and defensive units played brilliant ball. A combined ground and air attack was almost spotless as the locals swarmed over the Catamounts. Downfield blocking was beautiful as several long runs were ripped off by Pirate backs. The Buccaneers walloped favored Guilford, 26-7, at Greens- boro to move into third place in conference standings. The Pirates defense was the difference in this affair. Offensive line play was led by Bill McDonald, Jesse Aldridge, Doc Smith and Buck Wilson. Johnny Smith, who took over for injured Tom Swain at fullback, played the full sixty minutes and was brilliant both on offense and defense. Britt ' s 60-yard TD dash after a toss from Thrift was probably the outstanding plav of the game, however. Playing before the largest crowd of the year, nearly 8,000 fans. East Carolina battled to an impressive 20-12 triumph over the Cherry Point Marines here. Thrift ' s passing was superb. He hit on 17 of 33 pitches for 298 yards. Bill Darby turned in a great running game and made several spectacular pass catches. Appalachian blanked the Buccos, 20-0, at Boone in a game played in snow and mud, and in below-freezing weather. The EC air attack was almost completely stalled. The Apps unleashed a powerful ground attack led by their great Jace Groce. The Buc defense played a splendid game under the conditions they were subjected to. however. East Carolina came roaring back the next week-end to over- power High Point, 26-0. in a game played on the Pirates ' home grounds. This tilt was reeled off in cold, rainy weather also. A strong ground attack, led by Wilson in the line, was the main factor. Hodges and McKenzie shone on defense. The Bucs. in their last game of the season, ran all over Atlantic Christian College. The Pirates, playing at home, piled up a 54-7 score as every player on both the defensive and of- fensive units shone brilliantly. The Bohunk trophy returned to East Carolina by virtue of this triumph. From this history, one may easily gather that football is on the upgrade at East Carolina. We offer here a hearty vote of thanks to Coach Bill Dole and his entire squad for their splendid work. Top Row. left to right: Mike Kovack. Archie Conslelon. Thurston Calahan and Jesse Aldridge. The Bucs opened their conference slate by spanking Guilford, 61-35, at Greensboro. Their next conference battle saw them wallop Catawba here, 62-49. In their next loop outing, played here, the Piratemen were edged out by High Point. 59-58, when the Panthers ' Jesse Joyce dropped in a field goal in the closing sec- onds to cop the win. Appalachian fell before the Buccos here, 71-55. Champion Lenoir Rhyne put the skids under the locals, however, with a stinging 62-51 defeat in a game played on the East Carolina court. Catawba gained a 66-57 revenge win on the Indians ' home court. The Portermen stepped back into the win column by soundly trouncing Atlantic Christian College, 83-35, here. This win over their arch rivals also let the Bucs keep the Cherished Bohunk trophy. The Pirates lost another one-pointer, this time to Elon there, by a 75-74 count. Dave Mondy dropped in a field goal with five seconds to go for the Christians ' win. East Carolina dumped the Christians here by 74-62, however, to gain sweet revenge. At Lenoir Rhyne, the Bears tripped the Bucs, 61-55 for the loop champions ' second victory over the locals. Appalachian took the measure of the Pirates, 66-57 in a game played there. From here on, the Pirates appeared invincible, as they gathered in victories in their last five encounters, all of which were impressive triumphs. With All-Conference Sonny Russell pouring in 35 points, the Bucs vanquished West Carolina, 98-69, and the next night almost duplicated that feat, smothering the Catamounts by 98-68. Journeying to High Point, the locals spanked the Panthers, 81-72 as Russell hit for 33 points. At Wilson, the Bucs turned in the highest point total in East Carolina history as they completely out- classed Atlantic Christian, 106-70, in the last game of the season. In non-conference affairs, the Pirates lost to Camp Lejeune there, 63-62, were beaten bv the strong semi-pro McCrary Eagles here, 61-50, but beat the Wilson Teachers of Washington. D. C, here by 64-59. They lost to Norfolk Navy here. 65-52. and fell before the Marines at Camp Lejeune again, 74-64. In their last non-conference contest, they gained revenge over the McCrary Eagles by topping them, 79-78, at Asheboro. East Carolina fielded a tall, talented but inexperienced squad this season. Fennell, a standout playmaker and defensive player, tallied 193. Collie was also an outstanding ball handler and de- fensive player, and Postas. 6-foot 6-inch lad , was tops under the baskets. With all this material on hand. Coach Porter should have an excellent crop to till the next few years, unless the world situation draws some of his boys into active service. The majority of them are in the .AROTC here, and should be around for awhile. Coach Charlie Bill Move ' s freshman cagers, led by Carl King, romped to six victories in nine tries. They stopped Tarboro High, Washington High, Windsor High, Wilmington Junior College, Nahunter High and New Bern High. Camp Lejeune High, State Class A champs, topped the Buc Frosh twice, and Beaufort High whipped them once. Coach Johnny Long Co-Captuins Crowell Willian Boxing at East Carolina received a terrific jolt this year, and not from the fists of any opponents. The Pirate pugs. East Carolina students and many fight fans in this area were extremely sorry to hear that intercollegiate boxing would be done away with here. A ruling by the State Board of Education caused this action just as the locals were getting ready for the 19.51 campaign. East Carolina was fast becoming recognized as the producer of one of the finest boxing teams in this area. In past years, they met such top-flight squads as The Citadel and the University of South Carolina, both powerful members of the Southern Con- ference. The Pirates did well against these strong foes. They did so well, in fact, that they were invited to the Southern Inter- collegiate Boxing tournament in South Carolina last year and were slated to appear in that nationally famous meet again. this year. Coach Johnny Long worked hard with his boys, and they in turn worked hard for him and East Carolina, preparing for the anticipated season of ring action. Their hard work was in vain, and so we hope that these few pages, which we dedicate to them, will in some small way help make up for the disappointment they suffered for not being able to fight for East Carolina. There were strong indications of another successful season this year. Among the veterans back were Crowell Williamson, one of the top Pirate pugs as a freshman last year, and Bill Torrens, a seasoned veteran and outstanding performer for the past three years. A bright new prospect was found in Pete Meadows, a former member of the Cherry Point Marines ' famous boxing team. .Several other newcomers appeared to be excellent material for forming a top-notch ring team. They included Carlton Gill, Tom Rollins, Henry Fordham. Farrell Memory, Jerry Braswell and Tom Cox. To Johnny and his boys we offer our humble gratitude and our deepest regrets for the fact that they were not allowed to take to the field of battle for dear oT East Carolina. PIRRTE GOLF riorth State Conference Champs c left la right: Milton Zrlliii. Jo Charlie Bill Moye, The Pirate linksmen of 1950 raked in the first North State championship for East Carolina. The college has been a mem- ber of the coneference only since 1947. Captain Bill Stalls led the way to the crown for the Bucs. He also heaped more honors on East Carolina by winning the North State individual championship in a tourney played at Greensboro. Stalls, who has continually led the Pirates through three years of golfing, carded rounds of 71-76 for a 147 total to whip High Point ' s John Kupice who had a 74-77-151 score for second place. Moulton Massey. East Carolina ' s No. 2 linkster. was third in this tournament with a 74-79-153 score. Other Pirates in the tournament were Walter Wells (85-79-164) and Joe Exum (81- 87-168). East Carolina copped the league crown by winning six out of six loop matches during the 1950 season. The Bucs have lost only one conference match since they started playing golf in 1947. and that one was to High Point, then the circuit champions. The Pirates racked up a season record of seven triumphs and only two setbacks. These two losses were at the hands of the strong Wake Forest Deacons of the Southern conference. Guilford was first on the schedule for the locals, and the Quakers fell by a 19 1-7 ' ;; score in a match played here. Massey led the way for the Buccos by posting a 76 for medalist honors. The winners were playing without Stalls, who was competing in the Azalea Open Coif tournament in Wilmington. Incidentally, Stalls did all right for himself at Wilmington, placing high among the field of amateurs there. The Pirates topped Guilford here again, this tune to the tune of 2OIA-6V2. With Stalls still in Wilmingion. Exum paced the Pirates with a medalist score of 77. Wells and Milton Zellin were close behind with 78 ' s. Wake Forest handed the locals a stinging 21-6 defeat here. In the 19-8 triumph Stalls was again the leader, as he won medalist honors with a 70. 2 under par. and defeated his foe 3-0. Exum and Move also turned in 3-0 victories to help win the match. Stalls was once more top man in the Bucs final match and 20-7 victory over High Point. The Pirate ace carded a 67, 5 under par for medalist honors, and another 3-0 win. Moye also turned in a 3-0 triumph to share honors with Stalls. That is the story of the 1950 Pirate linksters. That ' s the way they brought home the first North .State conference cham- pionship to dear ol ' East Carolina. Massej sinks a putt as Moye and Wills look on. Coach Jack Boone The Pirate baseballers of East Carolina turned in a commendable record of eleven victories, two ties, and ten defeats for the 1950 season. They won eight and lost eight in North State conference play to grab fifth place in the loop, just one game behind Atlantic Christian College. One of the top honors did fall to East Carolina, even though the Pirates didn ' t win the crown. Vernon Jones, a four-year veteran on the Buc diamond nine, landed a spot on the All North State conference squad. Jones pitched and played outfield for the Bucs. He was one of the top twirlers and a leader at the plate. He is pictured on the introductory page to the baseball section. Jones was lost to the squad through graduation, as were such other stars as Bob McCotter, Stan Terrill. Frank Ceruzzi. Jimmy Flye, John Morris, Howard Whitehurst. George Wood, and Carlton Fleetwood. Starting with just a few veterans and a host of newcomers, the Bucs dropped their opener with Guilford here, 11-4. The locals caught fire in their next two games as they edged out Lenoir Rhyne 3-2, and outscored High Point 10-9. Coach Jack Boone ' s lads fell before Catawba 4-2, but in their ne. t outing they spanked Wilson Teachers College of Washing- ton, D. C, by a 16-4 margin. This non-conference crew retaliated the next day, however, and trimmed the Pirates 5-3. aniond lads enga endly pepper game. Elon. defending champs of the NS loop and winners of the crown again in ' 50, topped the Pirates by 51. The Bucs then beat the Greenville Robins of the Coastal Plain league, 5-3. The Bulldogs of Atlantic Christian, arch rivals of the Pirates, tripped the Boonemen 13-9 and took home the cherished Bohunk trophy. The locals bounced back into the win column with a boom, however, as they swept in both ends of two doubleheaders, one from Western Carolina Teachers College, by scores of 4-3 and 10-1, and on from Appalachian by 7-5 and 6-4 counts. This moved the Buccos into third place in NS standings. At this point, they played their first game away from home, going to Norfolk to tie the Little Creek Amphibs, 2-2 in a 12-inning affair. While at Norfolk, the Pirates lost to Norfolk Naval Air station. 8-7, and then battled to another 12-inning deadlock, this time with Norfolk Receiving station. The score was 6-6. Back in conference play, Boone ' s boys dropped a 7-4 decision to Catawba on the Indians ' diamond. Elon handed the Bucs a 6-5 setback at Burlington. It was in this game that Fred Soles, ace Pirate batsman, had his hitting streak of 17 games broken. The East Carolinians gained revenge over Norfolk Naval Air station liy whipping them. 6-4. at East Carolina. The locals then turned back High Point, 6-5, at High Point, but wire stoppei 13-0, by Lenoir Rhyne at Hickory. . ' t Greensboro the Pirate nine hung up tlicir la-l win of tl year by trouncing Guilford 8-4. They lost their last game of tl year to Atlantic Christian. 8-2, enabling the Bulldogs to keep tl Bohunk trophy. Plunging into one of the roughest schedules ever slated by an East Carolina net team, the valiant Pirates entered into every foray with the determina- tion to give their best for dear ol ' Teachers College. With only two veterans — Art Holland and Gorrell Bass — back, and a host of promising but untried newcomers, the Buccos carried the Purple-and-Gold against such schools as Wake Forest and North Caro- lina State, plus several North State clubs. These newcomers showed up well during the season despite the poor record. They include Dick Palmer, Dave Jones, Max Garrell, Vernon Tyson, and Rex Guthrie. The Pirates met Guilford here to open the season. The Quakers won a hard-fought 4-3 victory. Guilford was met here again in the second match of the season, and again won by a close 4-3 margin. North Carolina State, next on the roster, whipped the locals 9-0 at Raleigh. Elon handed the Pirate netmen their fourth straight defeat with an 8-1 whipping delivered here. Wake Forest kept the Bugs on the wrong side of the ledger by soundly trouncing them 9-0 at Wake Forest. The Bucs journeyed to Elon for their sixth match of the year, and this time gave the Christians a tougher battle than before. Elon won that one 6-4. High Point, net kings of the North State con- ference, tripped the locals twice here by scores of 9-0 and 8-1, to close out the season for the Pirates. Thus the Buccaneer netters concluded their sched- ule without a victory in actual scores. However, they won a great victory still — the undying gratitude of their fellow students for their great sportsmanship. To them we offer in tribute a vote of thanks.
