VINCI Graduate Work At East Carolina On August 22, 1929, East Carolina Teachers College was authorized to grant the Master of Arts degree. The first candidate received the degree four years later. From 1933 through August, 1949, one hundred fifty-five candidates were granted the Master of Arts degree. The largest number in any one year, fifty-five, were granted during the academic year 1948-1949, including the 1949 summer session. There ore currently more than two hundred candidates for the degree. All graduate students at East Carolina who are studying for the Master ' s degree major in some phase of professional education; elementary education, secondary education, or edu- cational administration and supervision. Students may specialize also in guidance and special education. Secondary education majors must and administration and supervision majors may minor in one academic field. Such students will normally meet the academic requirements graduate certificates in both the major and minor fields by the time they have completed the requirements for the Master ' s degree. Minor fields leading to graduate teaching certificates are offered at East Carolina as follows: business education, English, geography, health and physical education, history, library science, mathematics, science, and social studies. The academic requirements for the superintendent ' s cerfificotes may be met by taking extensive work in the field of edu- cational administration.
