Did you have to go to school when you were young Granny? replied Betty Oh my yes I went through twelve long years Just as you children are doing now wa Granny s answer What was it like? spoke up one Dld you have the same classe as we do? asked another Were your teachers mean? questioned one bright eyed child If you ll all be st1ll Ill tell you about it Granny answered Swell was the unanimous reply Our reading wr1t1ng and r1thmet1c years were Just the same as yours are today but each year had something spe 1al to treasure and re member for years In first grade we all were eager to get to school early Not be ause we were particularly studious but as soon as we arrived we each got a half sheet of tablet paper to doodle on We were all miniature surreal1sts in the rough and I do mean rough Second grade was the scene of one of our greatest achievements we learned to tell time The cheery little face on the clock used to smile at us as we struggled to know that when the big hand was at two it was ten after the hour but 1f the little hand was at two it was some where around two o clock or two thirty In third grade we got our first taste of ad vanced mathematics multiplication by name Ill never forget how important and grown up we felt upon our entry into fourth grade Do you know why? It was all because we changed las es once a day We took our music lesson in room f1ve be ause the piano was there Oh how proud we felt marching from one room to another Just as they did in that never never land high school Fifth grade was adventure plus Our main event was our hobby show Our parents were invited but only mothers ame I wonder why? Those dads dont know what they rnlssed Iohnny Lovett was surely a wicked guitar play er but something must have been wrong with the plug that day The girls trio was a hit too Doris Anne Smith Aldine I-Iile leanen McCla1ne sang The Big Rock Candy Moun tain The big number was Sunbonnet Sally and Overall lim sung by Frances Weibel and Don Beabout Oh luscious days of Joy' Next was sixth grade with its songfests Max Pfaff played the piano I wonder if any of my classmates remember Follow the Gleam and Song of Peace ? Heavenly days look at us now We re in were our sentiment regarding seventh grade We had a new teacher that year Speculation ran high on what she would look like and if she would be n1ce We neednt have worried Miss Shumaker was swell We changed classes at last and had five different teachers We turned to acting this year The Courtship of Mile Standish was our choice We were so good that we had two casts One presented the play for assembly while the other presented it for the P T A We d have played on Broadway if only we would have had Soclal Security cards The next September saw us spreading our cheer in eighth grade Struggling through those arithmetic tests was one of our chores We thought wed try our hand at acting this year too The play we chose was for Christmas as sembly a drarn1t1zat1on of the story Why the Chirres Bang But we brought down the house before the performance School closed because of a flu epidemic This was the year Mrs Brooks came to supervise our writing and some of us got Writing certlficates From the rmddle of April to a certain day in May we all lived in virtual terror Eighth grade exams were upon us We dreaded both the test and the results however our worry was in vain Our class scored the hlghest median 1n the county Hlp hip hurrah' Then came our third and f1nal year in Junior O O 1 n 1 I ll n I v : s .
