Since July, 1957, our school has been a part of a new jointure with York Springs called Bermudian Springs Joint School District. With die reorganization of the school and die building program, we feel that these men have displayed a united effort to provide better facilities for our future education. We are happy to express our gratitude to these men who are so vitally essential to the well-being of the school. 5 MESSAGE TO THE SENIORS Greetings and best wishes to die Class of 1958. It has been a real joy and privilege to have had a small share in helping you to develop those mental, moral, and spiritual qualities of personality which are so neces- sary to enjoy life and to fulfill positions of responsibility in our society. Congratulations to each one of you upon the achievement of this important goal in your educational experience. AMOS D. MEYERS Supervising Principal PRINCIPALS MESSAGE TO THE SENIORS As we pass our milestones in life, we reminisce and hope to hang on to some of our experiences as memories. Often we are prone to keep the experiences that have made us happy at that particular time fore- most in our memories; however, not all of these will fall in this category. As you pass from high school to an institution of higher learning or into man's occupational world, I am sure you will keep with you memories of the past twelve years of your formal ed- ucation. These memories you will probably classify as good, bad, or indifferent. I feel sure, that as life continues to change for you, these experiences will be- come more valuable to you. It is my fond wish, as well as the faculty's, that our part of your memories will be a helping hand to guide you to success and happiness. We wish the best for you, the Class of 1958. ALFRED R. Ready! All set! Let’s go! We decide to start at our own home town and first of all we find Samuel Stoner in our gool old school of East Berlin High teaching Algebra class. After chatting with him a minute, we decide to move on and see what has become of the rest of our classmates. As we go on down the street we meet Fred Innerst lugging his fishing equipment, as he took the easy way of life. F red tells us that the doctor down the street has just hired a new nurse, and we thought that there would be a mere possibility that it could be one of our classmates. So, we decide to use his lead and go on our way to investi- gate. Upon entering the waiting room we find Betty Bankert ushering a patient into the office. Say! maybe we had better leave or she will usher US in and we really are not in need of a doctor’s care. As we move on we pass two little pink cottages and we hear familiar voices. As we listen quietly, we find out that to our surprise it is the former Ruth Brodbeck and Dorothy Witter having a friendly chat over the back fence as they hang up their famil- ies' wash. We travel on toward Harrisburg and see a large dairy farm owned and operated jointly by Charles Lentz, Ronald Wolfe, and Melvin Starner. A large feed truck is being unloaded by a very familiar person. On the door of the truck appear the words, ”Wil- liam Starner’s Fine Feeds.’’ Speeding on toward Harrisburg, we are stopped by some policemen. Out of the car jump two men that look familiar to us and after looking at them the second time we recognize them as Robert Shafer and Larry Wrights. After seeing who we are, they take mercy on us and allow us to continue on our journey -- Good cops, wouldn’t you say? As we arrive at our destination we see a barber shop with the name above the door, “Robert Crone, Proprietor.” He really seems to be busy. Now be careful Bob, leave a little hair on that man’s head! Taking another look, we find sure enough, that the man sitting on the chair is our curly, red-headed classmate, William Bowen. Upon leaving the barber shop, we decide to tour the Capitol. Listen to all the chat- tering coming from the main office. Our curiosity drives us to take a peep inside. Seated at the desk is our old friend, Timothy Baker, as personnel director, and close by, Maxine Gross as receptionist. Tim informs us that he has employed some of our energetic pals. Taking a glance back through the office, we find as bookkeeper, Doris Nitchman; Stenographer, Shirley Haar; and look at those fingers fly! Why it’s Ruth Wolf as typist! As we look at our watches we see we have only twenty-five minutes to get to the Spring Fashion Show where the main feature is Loreen Albright modeling form-fash- ion garments. So off we hurry. After leaving the show, yours truly develops a tooth ache, so we stop at the first dentist’s office we come to. After gathering up enough spunk to enter the office and with much difficulty getting seated as a result of the jumping toothache, imagine our sur- prise when the dental assistant, Shirley Smith, comes to our aid. After the splendid service, we are feeling tops and turn our chariot toward Abbotts- town, where we are invited for a turkey dinner at the home of our classmate, Shirley Weaver Crawford, her husband, Don, and their three-year-old twin boys. As we come to the end of a perfect day, we retire for the night to relive in our dreams many happy experiences of the years spent at the former East Berlin High School now known as Bermudian Springs. 22 UNDERCLASSMEN FIRST ROW: R. One of the most exciting moments for our members during this school year occurred when our class rings and jackets arrived. It was the first year for East Berliners to receive Bermudian Springs rings and jackets. Throughout the year many of our class members took an active part in basketball, soccer, and other sports, chorus, and band. There were five members on the Student Council -- the office of Vice-President was held by Carl Myers and Linda Shellenberger served as Secretary. 25 t-IRST ROW: M. Wentz, J. Baker. P. Smith, J. What do you know . . our first year in senior high school! The upperclassmen call us silly sophomores , and I guess we're really living up to the name. But regardless of what the upperclassmen think, we have members taking an active part in sports, chorus, and band. Besides all the frolicking and fun-packed moments, we are caught, occasionally, in a serious mood; one of which was our helping with the Christmas Concert. Through die guidance of our class advisor, Mr. Guise, and with the leadership of our class officers, we are slowly attaining our goal of becoming Seniors, which means that we can foresee the day when that treasured diploma will be placed in our hands. 27 FIRST ROW: F. Editor, Charles Lentz Planning this year’s Reflector was a pri- vilege and a pleasure for the entire staff. The opportunity for working on this edition was given to the Senior Class. With Mr. Rebert as our advisor, the Class of 1958 planned the year- book from cover to cover. The Advertising and Business Committees raised the necessary money to publish the book; and from this point, the other members of the class proceeded to put the book together. The staff members showed their best ef- fort on this undertaking, and it is their sincere hope that the readers realize the same degree of enjoyment that was apparent during the writ- ing, compiling, and editing of the 1958 Reflec- tor. 34 ADVERTISING COMMITTEE Maxine Gross, Chairman Fred Innetst Larry Wrights Ronald Wolfe ATHLETIC COMMITTEE Ruth Wolf, Chairman William Bowen Melvin Starner William Starner PHOTOGRAPHY COMMITTEE Ruth Brodbeck Shirley Haar, Tim Baker Chairman ART STAFF Robert Crone Robert Shafer, Loreen Albright Chairman BUSINESS COMMITTEE Shirley Smith, Chairman Betty Bankert Samuel Stoner TYPING COMMITTEE Shirley Weaver Ruth Wolf 35 FIRST ROW: R. World Service Rep. 36 This year, the Senior Tri-Hi-Y Club, under the supervision of Mrs. Knisely and the club officers, has truly lived up to its pur- pose -- to create, maintain, and extend throughout the home, school, and community the high standards of Christian character.” Our club sponsored the New Year’s Eve Party - Dance, and we also aided in making our Valentine’s Dance (Cupid’s Ball) suc- cessful. The members of the Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y went caroling after the Christmas Concert and held a party later. Several of our girls attended the Older Girls’ Conference at Camp Hill. Some of our service projects were: Thanksgiving favors for the Elizabethtown Hospital for Crippled Children, saving pennies for the adoption of our Korean orphan (which was continued from last year), roller-skating party, pretzel sales, a plastic demonstration, and a bar- becue sale at lunch time. “Teen Talks were a very important part of our Club program. Discussions were held on subjects such as: alcoholism, religion, and boy-and-girl friendships. Panel discussions were conducted on going steady and preparing for marriage. TRI-HI-Y 37 FIRST ROW; H. Plans were made for the Mixed Chorus, directed by Mr. Diehl, to participate in the Christmas Concert pre- sented just before the holiday season. After Christmas, each member of the Chorus was looking for- ward to County Chorus, with hopes of being chosen as one of the re- presentatives from our school. Not long after the County Chorus performance came the Spring Concert, in which the Chorus members participated. Now, the Chorus is looking forward to 1958-1959 activities with much enthusiasm in the hope that next year’s group will find as much enjoyment in their work as we realized during 1957-19581 41 FIRST ROW: W. The activities of the year were highlighted by the annual Christmas and Spring Concerts. Also, a number of players from each section of the band were invited to participate in the Adams County Band Festival at Gettysburg during the school year. The band is small in number this year compared with other years, but they still have the spirit and determination that equals a truly wonderful high school band. 43 C. Shafer, J. Miller, B. Sheib, J. JUNIOR BAND As we look into the future, we see die Junior Band doing their best to show Mr. Diehl just what talents they have. It is a long, hard climb and every member is willing to practice the long hours to work their way up into the Senior Band. Their work is never finished; but as you know, practice makes perfect. To become a Senior Band member it takes more than wishing and all of the boys and girls are working diligently toward reaching their ultimate goal -- the Senior Band.
